Chapter 15 - The Unbreakable Bond

The doors to Courtroom 302 swung open ten minutes later.

The atmosphere inside was thick with tension. Victoria Sterling sat at her table, a victorious, cruel smile playing on her lips as she watched us enter. She believed the leaked audio had sealed our fate.

Judge Vance stepped back onto the bench, holding a newly delivered, sealed manila envelope bearing the official crest of the State Department of Justice.

"Before we resume," Judge Vance announced, her voice echoing off the high ceiling, "the court has just received an expedited, unsealed official affidavit from retired Lead Detective Marcus Thorne, accompanied by the certified state coroner's report regarding the death of Julian Vance-Cross."

Victoria Sterling's smile instantly vanished. Her lead attorney, Caldwell, sat up rigid.

Judge Vance opened the envelope, reading the contents silently for two long, unbearable minutes. As she read, her severe expression softened slightly, replaced by a deep, grave understanding.

"This court finds," Judge Vance stated, looking directly at Victoria Sterling, "that Mr. Cole Reed was completely exonerated of all criminal and moral liability regarding the tragic passing of Julian Vance-Cross. Furthermore, Detective Thorne's sworn testimony indicates that Mr. Reed performed CPR, alerted emergency services, and was cleared by toxicology reports on scene."

She slammed her hand down on the desk.

"The leaked audio presented by the plaintiff was a malicious, selective edit designed to mislead this court!" Judge Vance barked, her eyes flashing with judicial fury. "Mrs. Sterling, your attempt to weaponize a sealed police file to slander the respondent is an absolute disgrace to this proceedings!"

Caldwell jumped up frantically. "Your Honor! The Sterling Estate's financial standing—"

"Is irrelevant!" Judge Vance shouted him down. "Under the laws of this state, the best interest of the child is paramount! The evidence proves that Cole Reed and Maya Reed have provided a stable, loving, and self-sacrificing environment for Leo Miller since his mother's tragic passing."

She picked up her wooden gavel, looking at Cole with a look of profound respect.

"Temporary legal custody and full guardianship of Leo Miller is hereby awarded to Mr. Cole Reed and Mrs. Maya Reed. Formal adoption proceedings are cleared to move forward immediately. This court is adjourned!"

CRACK!

The strike of the gavel echoed through the room like a thunderclap.

The gallery erupted into chaos. Richard Vance let out a triumphant laugh, slamming his briefcase shut, while Victoria Sterling stood up in a fury, marching out the side exit with her disgraced legal team trailing behind her.

Cole fell back into his chair, covering his face with his hands, his shoulders shaking as violent, gasping sobs of pure relief escaped his chest. He had won. He had kept his promise to Julian. He had saved Leo.

He turned to me, his dark eyes shining with overwhelming love and gratitude, reaching out his arms to pull me into a celebration embrace. "Maya! We did it! Oh God, Maya, we won!"

I let him hold me. I buried my face in his neck, smelling his leather jacket and soap, letting my tears soak into his collar. I held him with every ounce of strength left in my body, memorizing the feel of his beating heart against mine.

Because I knew this was the last time I would ever feel it.

Over Cole's shaking shoulder, I looked past the cheering courtroom toward the back row.

My father was standing by the double exit doors. He pulled a folded legal document from his jacket pocket and raised it slightly, his eyes cold, demanding, and utterly relentless.

The contract.

"Cole..." I whispered, pulling back from his embrace, my voice sounding flat, empty, devoid of all the joy that should have filled this moment.

Cole stopped laughing, his brows furrowing in sudden confusion as he looked into my devastated face. "Maya? What's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?"

I reached out, my fingers gently tracing the dark ink of the tattoos on his forearm—the story only he could read. I traced his jawline, his lips, imprinting every line of his face into my memory forever.

"I love you, Cole," I said, my voice cracking violently on the last word. "I have loved you from the second I met you on that motorcycle. And I will love you until the day I die."

"Maya, you're scaring me," Cole said, his smile completely vanishing, panic instantly surging back into his dark eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"You're going to be an amazing father to Leo," I sobbed, taking a slow step backward, pulling my hands out of his grip. "He is so lucky to have you."

"Maya, stop!" Cole begged, reaching for me as I took another step back. "Where are you going?!"

"I made a promise to save him, Cole," I whispered, tears pouring down my face like torrential rain. "Just like you made a promise to Julian."

I turned on my heel and walked toward the back of the courtroom.

"Maya! MAYA!" Cole's agonized scream echoed off the marble walls, shattering the room's celebration.

I didn't turn around. I couldn't. If I looked back at his face, I knew I would collapse.

I walked straight past the reporters, straight past the cameras, and stood in front of my father at the exit doors. My father handed me his gold fountain pen and the legal document.

With trembling fingers, I signed my name on the bottom line, sealing my fate and selling my freedom to buy my husband and son their future.

I handed the paper back to my father. He slipped it into his jacket, offered me his arm, and together we walked out into the freezing snow, leaving Cole Reed standing alone in the center of the courtroom, holding our broken heart in his hands.
