Zero nine

Chapter 8 - Z

The midnight lighting inside the Vance Crest boardroom was cold and clinical. Rain lashed against the glass windows overlooking Midtown Manhattan, but inside, the atmosphere was as taut as a piano wire tuned to the breaking point.

Surrounding the massive mahogany table were eight people: myself, Brooke, Marcus Vance, Julianna Vance-Moretti, her lead corporate attorney, and three armed security operatives positioned near the heavy oak doors. On the table sat the black metal flash drive, connected via a heavy gold-plated bridge cable to a secure, air-gapped laptop provided by Julianna’s tech team.

Julianna stood at the head of the table, her jacket off, her sleeves rolled up, her eyes fixed on the laptop monitor. The screen displayed a harsh red terminal prompt:

ENTER MASTER CRYPTOGRAPHIC PASSPHRASE (32 CHARACTERS):

WARNING: INCORRECT ATTEMPT WILL TRIGGER THERMAL IRREVERSIBLE DATA DESTRUCTION.

"We have fulfilled every single one of your demands, Eleanor," Julianna said, gesturing toward the stack of signed legal documents sitting beside Marcus. "The immunity agreements for your mother have been filed with the state prosecutor's office. The transfer documents releasing all Moretti Group claims on Vance Crest stock are signed and notarized. Your sister and father are legally indemnified."

Marcus examined the documents carefully, checking the digital state seals on his tablet. He looked up at me and gave a crisp, affirmative nod. "They're real, Eleanor. The Moretti firm has officially relinquished every share, debt instrument, and lien they held against your family. Vance Crest is 100% yours."

"Good," I said, standing up from my seat and walking slowly toward the laptop terminal.

Julianna’s attorney stepped back, allowing me access to the keyboard. Everyone in the room leaned forward, their breathing suspended in anticipation. Julianna’s face was tense, her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. She truly believed that in a few seconds, she would possess the ultimate tool to erase thirty years of her family's dark history.

"The passphrase, Eleanor," Julianna demanded softly. "Type it in."

I looked down at the flashing red cursor. My mind drifted back to my grandfather—to the brilliant, quiet man who had built a corporate empire from nothing, who had loved me, and who had been murdered in his own bed by the monsters standing in this room.

I placed my fingers over the keys.

E-D-W-A-R-D-S-T-E-R-L-I-N-G-1-9-9-1-V-E-N-G-E-A-N-C-E

I hit the ENTER key.

For two agonizing seconds, the screen went completely dark. The fan inside the laptop began to whir at maximum speed.

Then, the red terminal prompt dissolved, replaced by a blinding green background featuring the official seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by a rapid progress bar:

PASSPHRASE AUTHENTICATED.

PROTOCOL ZERO ACTIVATED.

TRANSMITTING ENCRYPTED LEDGERS TO DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE (PUBLIC CORRUPTION DIVISION)...

TRANSMITTING FORENSIC EVIDENCE TO INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION)...

TRANSMITTING EVIDENCE OF HOMICIDE TO NEW YORK STATE POLICE...

STATUS: 100% COMPLETE. RECEIPT CONFIRMED BY FEDERAL SERVERS.

Julianna froze. Her eyes expanded in pure, unadulterated horror as she read the lines scrolling rapidly across the screen.

"What... what is this?" she stuttered, her voice stripped of all its arrogance, turning thin and hysterical. "What did you do?!"

"I activated Protocol Zero, Julianna," I said calmly, stepping back from the table and crossing my arms. "My grandfather didn't write a password to hide your family's crimes. He wrote a trigger. The moment that passphrase was entered, the entire Moretti financial network—every shadow account, every bribed politician, every fraudulent land transfer—was delivered directly to the Director of the FBI."

"You crazy bitch!" Julianna screamed, lunging across the table toward me.

Before she could reach me, the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom were blown open with a deafening bang.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DON'T MOVE! HANDS ON THE TABLE!"

A dozen heavily armed FBI SWAT operatives stormed into the room, their tactical rifles equipped with laser sights painting red dots across the suits of Julianna’s bodyguards. The bodyguards immediately raised their hands, dropping their weapons onto the carpeted floor.

Behind the tactical team walked Special Agent David Miller, the lead investigator from the Financial Crimes Task Force whom Marcus and I had secretly met with three hours before going to Wall Street.

"Julianna Vance-Moretti," Agent Miller announced, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical vest. "You, your father Charles Moretti, and eighteen senior partners of the Moretti Group are under federal indictment for racketeering, wire fraud, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit murder."

Julianna backed away, her back hitting the glass window, looking frantically around the room for an exit that didn't exist. "This is a mistake! My lawyers will have this thrown out before sunrise!"

"Your lawyers are currently being arrested at their townhouses in Manhattan, Ms. Moretti," Agent Miller replied coldly, stepping forward and forcing her arms behind her back, snapping the cold steel cuffs onto her wrists.

As the agents led a screaming, cursing Julianna out of the boardroom in chains, Agent Miller stopped in front of my desk. He looked at me with deep professional respect.

"Your grandfather was a remarkable man, Ms. Sterling," Miller said. "He set a trap five years ago, and you executed it perfectly."

"It took longer than it should have, Agent Miller," I said softly, feeling an overwhelming wave of exhaustion finally crash over my body. "But the debt is settled."

After the agents cleared the floor, taking the servers, the drive, and Julianna’s security team with them, the boardroom became quiet once again. Only Marcus, Brooke, and I remained.

Brooke walked over to me, tears streaming down her face, and pulled me into a tight, emotional embrace. "It's over, Eleanor. He can never hurt us again. None of them can."

"It's over, Brooke," I agreed, patting her back gently. "You and your son are safe. I'll make sure Vance Crest sets up a permanent educational trust for him tomorrow morning."

"Thank you," she sobbed, holding me tight.

I looked out the window. The storm outside was finally beginning to pass, the heavy rain tapering off into a gentle mist as the first faint rays of dawn began to break over the Atlantic Ocean, illuminating the Manhattan skyline in shades of pink and gold.

I had survived the betrayal of my family, the destruction of my reputation, and the wrath of an international criminal syndicate. I had stepped into the dark as a victim, and emerged as the undisputed head of the empire.

Now, only one final piece of business remained: dealing with the broken remnants of the family I had left behind.
