Chapter 10 - Z

Six months later, the early autumn air over Manhattan was crisp and clear. The leaves in Central Park had turned brilliant shades of amber and gold, framing the city skyline in breathtaking natural beauty.
On the top floor of the Vance Crest tower, the grand ballroom—the very room that had once been slated for Sienna's doomed wedding—was filled with light, music, and the low hum of three hundred invited guests. But there were no paparazzi outside, no extravagant flower arches funded by stolen money, and no tense whispers of corporate deception.
Tonight was the inauguration of the Edward Sterling Memorial Foundation, a non-profit organization funded entirely by Vance Crest's profits, dedicated to providing legal defense and financial aid to victims of corporate fraud and white-collar crime.
I stood near the balcony doors, wearing a simple, elegant dark emerald gown. A glass of sparkling water rested in my hand as I watched the guests converse with board members, journalists, and community leaders.
Beside me stood Brooke Thorne. She looked radiant, her face free of the lines of terror and exhaustion that had plagued her six months ago. Her eight-year-old son, Leo, was playing happily near the grand piano in the corner under the watchful eye of a friendly foundation staff member.
"It's hard to believe this is the same room where the black box was opened," Brooke said softly, taking a sip from her glass and looking around the glowing hall.
"It isn't the same room, Brooke," I smiled, looking at her. "We tore down the old foundation and built something real in its place."
"How are things with the trial?" Brooke asked quietly.
"Arthur pleaded guilty yesterday afternoon," I replied, my voice completely devoid of emotion or malice. "To avoid a lengthy federal trial that would expose more of his co-conspirators, he accepted a thirty-year sentence in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Julianna received twenty-five years for her role in the racketeering enterprise."
Brooke let out a long, slow breath, a subtle weight lifting from her shoulders. "And your parents?"
"They are living quietly in Saratoga," I said. "My father spends his days gardening. My mother has taken up painting. They live simple, invisible lives. Sienna registered at a local university last month to study social work. She calls me once a week. I don't always answer, but... she leaves messages. She's trying."
"And you, Eleanor?" Brooke asked, turning her sharp, perceptive eyes toward me. "When do you start living for yourself instead of running an empire?"
I laughed softly, looking out through the open glass doors onto the balcony, where Marcus Vance was motioning for me to join him and the chief foundation trustees for the evening's opening address.
"This is my life, Brooke," I said, my voice filled with a quiet, unshakeable confidence. "Building something that lasts, protecting the people who can't protect themselves, and making sure no one ever takes my seat at the table again."
I squeezed Brooke’s hand gently before stepping out onto the grand stage under the warm glow of the spotlight. The applause from the crowd swelled, filling the immense space with genuine warmth and respect.
I looked out at the faces of the employees I had saved, the allies I had made, and the legacy my grandfather had entrusted to me.
I adjusted the microphone, leaned forward, and began to speak.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Eleanor Sterling... and welcome to the future of Vance Crest."
