Chapter 13

Despite the blowout in court, Julian refused to leave the city. Two days later, a mysterious black SUV began idling near the perimeter gates of the estate. Security alerted me immediately, but every time the guards approached, the vehicle sped away into the night.
Victoria arrived at the estate late that evening, carrying a box of old archival boxes from her family's office.
"Julian is getting desperate, Lena," Victoria warned as we sat in the kitchen. "My father remembers Julian from twenty years ago. He’s not like Daniel. Daniel was an arrogant coward who hid behind his mother. Julian is a sociopath. When he ran out of money in Europe, he got involved with some very dangerous offshore investors."
"He thinks he can intimidate me into a settlement," I said, pouring fresh tea. "He thinks because I was quiet during my marriage, I'm an easy target."
"He’s watching the house," Victoria insisted. "Security saw his SUV near the rose garden perimeter again an hour ago."
"Let him watch," I said calmly. "Every inch of this property is now monitored by high-definition thermal cameras linked directly to the county sheriff's department. If he steps one foot over the property line, he gets arrested for criminal trespassing."
Suddenly, the kitchen lights flickered once and shut off completely, plunging the house into darkness.
Victoria gasped, jumping up from her chair. "Not again..."
"Stay calm," I said, reaching into the drawer for a flashlight. "The backup generator will kick in within five seconds."
We waited. Five seconds passed. Ten seconds. Silence. The generator didn't turn on.
"They severed the main power feed from the street," I realized, my heart picking up speed. "And they bypassed the automatic transfer switch."
A sudden heavy thump echoed from the conservatory. Someone was on the glass roof.
"Victoria, get into the safe room behind the library," I ordered, pulling a heavy tactical flashlight from the counter. "Lock the door from the inside and press the silent panic button."
"I'm not leaving you!" Victoria whispered frantically.
"I know this house better than anyone," I said firmly, pushing her toward the hallway. "Go!"
I moved stealthily through the dark corridors toward the conservatory. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls, illuminated only by the moonlight, I saw a figure dressed in dark clothing stepping down from the shattered skylight.

It wasn't a burglar. It was Julian himself, holding a heavy iron pry bar in one hand and a canisters of flammable fluid in the other.
He was going to burn the house down.
