Chapter 12

Probate Court Division 4 was packed with press and high-society onlookers when the hearing began. Julian Vance sat at the plaintiff’s table, looking effortlessly sophisticated in a bespoke Italian suit, accompanied by a team of four top-tier estate litigators. He offered me a slick, patronizing smile as I took my seat next to Margaret.
Julian’s lead attorney, a notorious shark named Richard Sterling, took the podium. "Your Honor, the evidence is simple. In 1996, Eleanor Vance unlawfully stripped her son, Julian Vance, of his rightful percentage of the family holdings using an invalidated amendment. My client was coerced into signing a waiver under duress while residing overseas. We petition for the immediate freezing of the trust and the court-ordered sale of the Vance Estate."
The judge frowned, looking over the documents. "Ms. Sloan, your response?"
Margaret stood up, her composure absolute. "Your Honor, the waiver signed by Julian Vance in 1996 was not signed under duress. It was signed as part of a confidential criminal settlement. Julian Vance was not stripped of his inheritance; he traded it."
A sudden murmur ran through the gallery. Julian’s smile faltered slightly, his sharp eyes narrowing at Margaret.
"What settlement?" the judge demanded.
Margaret pulled a sleek black flash drive from her folder and handed it to the bailiff. "In 1995, Julian Vance embezzled two million dollars from Eleanor Vance’s primary firm to pay off personal gambling debts to a European syndicate. To prevent her son from facing federal prison, Eleanor Vance paid off his debts in full on one condition: Julian signed a permanent, irrevocable waiver surrendering all future claims to the family trust."
"That document is a fake!" Sterling shouted, rising from his chair. "My client never engaged in any illegal embezzlement!"
"The wire transfer receipts are attached, Mr. Sterling," Margaret countered, her voice ringing across the courtroom. "Signed by Julian Vance himself, authenticated by Swiss banking auditors three days ago."
Julian leaned over to his attorney, whispering furiously, his cool exterior rapidly cracking.
The judge reviewed the files on her monitor, her expression growing stern. "Mr. Sterling, these bank records appear entirely legitimate. If your client signed an irrevocable waiver in exchange for debt clearance, he has zero legal standing to challenge this trust."
Julian suddenly stood up, shoving his leather chair back with a loud screech. "She covered it up to protect her own name! Eleanor was protecting herself, not me! Lena doesn't deserve that house! She's a weak little girl who let her husband walk all over her for two years!"

"Sit down, Mr. Vance!" the judge barked, slamming her gavel down hard. "One more outburst and I will hold you in contempt of court!"
Julian glared at me across the aisle, his face red with frustration. I looked right back at him, unblinking, unbothered, and completely unfazed.
