Chapter 8 - Venom and Vengeance

The morning sun broke through the grey cloud cover, casting sharp, blinding light over the steps of the Monroe County Courthouse. Standing on the marble plaza near the entrance was Glenda Vance. She was barely recognizable from the polished, domineering woman who had ruled Demi’s household for two long years.
Her hair was unkempt, her makeup hastily applied, and her designer coat wrinkled from days of living out of cheap suitcases in her sister’s cramped spare room. Her son’s career was in ruins, his reputation destroyed, and their comfortable lifestyle had vanished into thin air.
As Demi stepped out of a black sedan at the curb, wearing an immaculate beige trench coat and dark sunglasses, Glenda’s self-control shattered completely.
"You monster!" Glenda shrieked, rushing down the steps toward Demi like a wild animal. "You filthy, treacherous snake!"
Marcus, who had been walking three paces behind Demi, stepped forward effortlessly, placing his massive frame between Glenda and Demi. He extended a broad, leather-gloved hand, stopping Glenda cold in her tracks.
"Step back, lady," Marcus warned, his voice low and dangerous. "You're under a temporary restraining order. One more step and I call the court officers to throw you in a holding cell."
Glenda shook with rage, her chest heaving, her eyes burning with pure venom as she glared at Demi from behind Marcus’s shoulder. "You destroyed my son! He was an executive! He had a future! You dragged his name through the mud over a stupid mistake!"
Demi slowly took off her sunglasses, looking down at Glenda with absolute calm. "Philip destroyed himself, Glenda. He chose to steal, he chose to lie, and he chose to cheat. You just taught him that he would never have to face consequences for his actions. You built his arrogance, and today you get to watch it collapse."
"He loved you!" Glenda screamed, tears of bitter fury spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. "He took you in when you had nothing!"
"I paid your rent, Glenda," Demi said, her voice striking like a cold steel blade. "I paid for your medicine. I cleaned up the trash you left around my house while you sat on my sofa telling me I wasn't good enough for your family. You were a parasite living off my labor, and the host has finally purged you."
Glenda gasped, staggering back as if she had been slapped. The sheer truth of Demi’s words hit her with crushing force.
At that moment, Philip emerged from the courthouse glass doors, accompanied by Arthur Vance. He looked hollowed out, a ghost of his former self. When he saw his mother screaming in the plaza, he rushed down the steps, pulling her back by her arms.
"Mother, stop! Shut up!" Philip hissed frantically, looking around at the passing lawyers and court staff who were staring at the spectacle. "You're making it worse!"
"She took everything, Philip!" Glenda wailed, pointing her shaking finger at Demi. "She took the apartment! She took the lake house!"
"She has the documents, Mother!" Philip yelled back, his voice breaking into a pathetically helpless sob. "If I don't sign the final transfer deeds today, I go to prison!"
Philip turned to face Demi, his eyes desperate, begging for a shred of mercy. "Demi... please. I signed the transfer deeds for Rochester and Lake Placid this morning. They're recorded. It's done. You have everything you wanted. Please... tell your lawyer to drop the corporate audit referral. Let me keep my life."
Demi looked at Philip—the man who had watched his mother throw an iron pot at her head, the man who had given her heirloom apron to another woman, the man who had hidden hundreds of thousands of dollars while watching her work grueling shifts to pay their bills.
"You signed the real estate transfers, Philip?" Demi asked smoothly.
"Yes! Everything! It's all yours!" Philip cried out, pulling signed receipts from his coat pocket to show her.
Demi smiled—a quiet, radiant smile that illuminated her face, entirely devoid of malice, yet cold as the winter freeze.
"Thank you, Philip," Demi said gently. She turned to Paige, who was standing beside her holding a sleek black tablet. "Paige, execute the second filing."
Philip froze. "Second... second filing? What second filing?!"
Paige tapped the screen of her tablet, sending a secure electronic document directly to the Federal Bankruptcy and Asset Recovery Court.
"Mr. Vance," Paige announced, her voice ringing clearly across the quiet courthouse plaza. "Fifteen minutes ago, we submitted formal evidence of your undisclosed offshore account in the Cayman Islands containing $412,000 to the IRS Fraud Division and the Federal Bankruptcy Trustee. A temporary freeze has been placed on all accounts associated with Vance Capital Holdings LLC."
Philip stared at her, his eyes wide with incomprehensible horror. "How... how did you...?"
"You forgot that I kept the password to your old hard drive, Philip," Demi whispered, stepping close to him, her eyes shining with absolute victory. "You took my past, Philip. But I just took your future."
Philip dropped to his knees on the concrete steps, letting out a primal, despairing wail that echoed across the stone plaza. Beside him, Glenda collapsed onto a marble bench, burying her face in her hands, weeping helplessly as the autumn wind whistled through the empty courtyard.

Demi put her sunglasses back on, turned her back on the ruined family, and walked away into the morning sunshine without looking back once.
