Chapter 7 - The Hidden Account

The rain returned late Thursday night, washing over the dark streets of downtown Rochester with a heavy, cold persistence. In her quiet study, Demi sat before a high-resolution monitor, her fingers dancing smoothly across the keyboard.

Even after Philip had signed the surrender documents at the deposition, a subtle instinct—honed by years of analyzing emergency room charts where small, overlooked details often meant the difference between life and death—kept nagging at her mind.

Philip was an ambitious, greedy man, but he was also deeply insecure. Men like him rarely kept all their eggs in one basket. If he had been bold enough to steal $80,000 from his firm’s client escrow accounts, it was virtually impossible that he had stopped there.

She pulled up the mirrored hard drive that Detective Marcus had extracted from Philip's home office desktop before the eviction order was finalized. Among thousands of routine tax filings and PDF invoices, Marcus had found an encrypted container file hidden deep within a system driver folder.

Demi opened a specialized decryption program provided by Marcus’s team. She typed in the password—a complex string of numbers she had deduced three days ago: the date of their wedding combined with her grandmother's death anniversary, a sick irony Philip had undoubtedly thought clever.

The green progress bar loaded instantly. The folder popped open.

Inside lay a series of PDF statements from a private banking institution based in the Cayman Islands, registered under a shell corporation called Vance Capital Holdings LLC.

Demi scrolled down the first statement. Her eyes widened slightly.

The balance was not zero. It wasn't even $80,000.

The closing balance on the account stood at $412,000.

Demi leaned back in her leather chair, her breath catching in her throat. She stared at the numbers glowing on the screen. Philip hadn't just been hiding small amounts of money for his affair with Chloe; he had been systematically siphoning off funds from a undisclosed real estate venture he had secretly brokered in Canada three years ago—all while claiming to Demi that they were barely keeping their heads above water.

She picked up her phone and immediately called Paige.

"Paige, you need to see this," Demi said, her voice dripping with ice. "Philip didn't just hide $80,000 in Delaware. I just unlocked an encrypted Cayman account. He has over four hundred thousand dollars hidden offshore."

There was a long, stunned silence on the other end of the line. "Four hundred thousand?!" Paige gasped. "Demi... if he hid an asset of that magnitude during a sworn financial disclosure in a matrimonial proceeding, that isn't just civil fraud. That's outright perjury and felony tax evasion!"

"What does this mean for the settlement we signed yesterday?" Demi asked.

"It means the settlement is voidable at your discretion," Paige said, her voice rising with fierce professional excitement. "We can rip that agreement to shreds and file an immediate federal asset freeze. Under New York law, when a spouse fraudulently conceals assets of this scale during divorce proceedings, the court can award up to one hundred percent of the hidden asset directly to the injured party as a punitive remedy!"

Demi looked at the bright screen, where Philip’s hidden fortune was laid bare in cold, digital ink. He had tried to play her for a fool, believing his superior knowledge of finance made him invincible, while treating her like a convenient servant who would finance his double life.

"Don't void the agreement yet, Paige," Demi said, a cold, calculated smile forming on her lips. "Let him think he got away with it. Let him think the signed settlement was his salvation."

"What are you planning, Demi?"

"He's scheduled to wire the final lake house transfer documents tomorrow morning at his lawyer's office," Demi explained softly. "I want him to execute those transfers first. Once the lake house and apartment are legally mine beyond any appeal, we trigger the federal seizure on the Cayman account."

"You're going to strip him clean," Paige whispered, a tone of deep awe in her voice. "Every single cent."

"He thought my grandmother's money was his plaything, Paige," Demi replied, looking out the window at the storm hammering against the glass. "I'm just collecting the interest."
