Zero nine

Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Trust

Z

Six months after the trial.

The dust had finally settled. The court had fully exonerated me of all financial liabilities, restored my maiden name—Danielle Miller—and frozen the liquidated assets of Vance & Sterling to repay the victims of their embezzlement.

I had sold our old suburban house—the house filled with staged memories—and moved to a modest, sunlit cottage in coastal Oregon. I spent my days restoring old antique furniture and working part-time for a local domestic violence advocacy group.

I believed my nightmare had finally reached its conclusion.

Until a thick white envelope arrived in my mailbox on a foggy Tuesday morning.

There was no return address. Just a postmark from a federal correctional facility in Florence, Colorado.

My hands trembled as I opened it using a brass letter opener. Inside was a single sheet of lined notebook paper written in neat, deliberate handwriting.

It was from Valerie Vance.

Dani,

I know I am the last person on earth you ever want to hear from. I am writing this from my cell in Florence. I know I deserve every day of my sentence for what I let Julian and Marcus do to you.

But I am writing this because I found something in Marcus’s personal estate files that were delivered to me by my appellate lawyer last week.

Julian didn't act alone, Dani. Marcus wasn't the mastermind either.

The twelve million dollars wasn't embezzled to pay off gambling debts or corporate deficits. It was paying off a shadow syndicate called 'The Apex Group'—an international asset-stripping firm that targets wealthy, isolated estates across the country.

Julian wasn't just a dirty lawyer. He was an operative for them. He has been doing this long before he met you. You were his third target.

His first wife didn't leave him. She died in an unsolved hit-and-run accident in Seattle fourteen years ago. The insurance payout founded his law firm.

Dani... Julian didn't lose his phone by accident on Highway 9.

He dropped it intentionally because he realized Apex was coming to liquidate him. He wanted you to find the phone so you would uncover the garage, call the police, and create enough chaos for him to fake his own death during the raid.

His plan failed because you hit him with that crowbar and the police arrested him before he could execute the final trade.

Julian is in prison, Dani. But Apex is still looking for the remaining six million dollars that vanished from the server on the night of the raid.

They think you have the encryption keys.

Be careful.

Valerie.

The paper slipped from my hands, fluttering down onto the wooden porch floor.

My breath caught in my throat. The cold Oregon wind suddenly felt ice-cold against my skin.

His first wife died in Seattle fourteen years ago.

I ran inside, slammed the door shut, and locked all three deadbolts. I rushed to my desk, opened my laptop, and pulled up the archived files from the encrypted USB drive I had backed up on the night of the garage raid—the files the FBI had returned to me after the trial concluded.

I opened the root system folder.

Embedded deep within the file directory, hidden behind three layers of decoy code, was a file I had never noticed before:

PROJECT_SEATTLE_2012.DAT

I clicked on it.

A list of names popped up on the screen.

Name #1: Sarah Jenkins. Died November 4th, 2012. Cause of death: Vehicular Homicide. Beneficiary: Julian Vance. Payout: $3,500,000.

Name #2: Danielle Miller. Status: Active. Target Liquidation Date: November 18th, 2026.

Name #3: Clara Bennett. Status: Pending. Target Acquisition Date: January 2027.

My blood turned to pure ice.

Julian hadn't just been planning to frame me. I was part of a systematic, cold-blooded murder-for-hire estate stripping operation. And Clara Bennett—the third name on the list—was a wealthy heiress living in San Francisco whose legal trust Julian’s firm had taken over six months ago.

Suddenly, my phone on the desk chimed with a text message from an unknown number.

I picked it up with a shaking hand.

The message contained no text. Just a single photograph.

It was a high-resolution photo of me, taken from across the street, sitting on my front porch holding Valerie’s letter just five minutes ago.

A second message immediately followed:

“Hand over the encryption keys for the Zurich account by midnight, Ms. Miller. Or you will join Sarah Jenkins.”
