Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Horizon

On a crisp Saturday morning in October, Mara took Sadie to the coastal bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The seaside park was wide and open, with long paved trails winding along the cliffs and a sprawling green meadow filled with children flying kites.

Sadie was six now. She ran ahead along the paved path, her bright red windbreaker fluttering in the salt breeze, clutching the string of a giant dragon-shaped kite.

“Mommy, look! It’s higher than the lighthouse!” Sadie shouted, her laughter ringing out across the grassy bluff.

Mara walked alongside her, keeping a steady, easy pace. She wore hiking boots and jeans, the carbon-fiber socket of her prosthesis catching the midday sunlight. There was no anxiety in her stride, no quiet dread about whether she was moving fast enough or looking graceful enough for an invisible judge.

Her phone buzzed in her jacket pocket with a news alert: Former CFO Nolan Hale Sentenced to Nine Years in Federal Embezzlement Scheme.

Mara glanced at the notification for three seconds, feeling neither triumph nor malice. It was simply a final, distant punctuation mark on a chapter that no longer defined her story. She swiped the notification away, locked the screen, and slid the phone back into her pocket.

Sadie ran back toward her, breathless and flushed with joy, throwing her small arms around Mara’s waist.

“Can we go all the way to the top of the hill, Mommy?” Sadie asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes. “It’s really steep.”

Mara looked up at the winding path that led toward the highest crest of the bluff, where the ocean met the open sky in an unbroken, endless horizon.

“Yes, we can,” Mara said, taking her daughter’s hand firmly in her own. “Let’s go see how far we can see.”

Together, mother and daughter began the climb, stepping into the bright, unburdened future they had built with their own hands.
