Chapter 8 - THE DESPERATE PLEAZ

By four o’clock that afternoon, the outcome of the emergency hearing before Judge Martinez was absolute carnage for Ryan.
Judge Martinez did not merely reprimand him; she decimated him. Ryan’s action of draining the joint account, transferring money offshore, and attempting to destroy corporate evidence constituted a severe criminal contempt of court. His assets were immediately placed under total judicial receivership. A court-appointed receiver was granted full control over every single bank account, property, and investment associated with Ryan and Apex Horizons LLC.
Furthermore, Judge Martinez ordered Ryan to pay my full legal fees, awarded me full legal and physical custody of Luna, Soleil, and Bodhi, and issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting Ryan from coming within 500 feet of me or my parents' house.
I sat on the front porch of my house later that evening, holding a warm mug of coffee, listening to the peaceful sounds of the neighborhood. The summer breeze rustled through the large oak trees in the yard. Inside, Shaun and my mother were feeding the triplets, their soft coos echoing gently through the open screen door.
Suddenly, a loud, rusted sedan pulled up to the curb in front of the house.
The door opened, and Evelyn, Ryan’s mother, stepped out. She looked entirely disheveled. Her usually pristine hair was messy, her makeup was smeared, and her eyes were swollen and bloodshot from crying.
She hurried up the walkway, her hands clutched tightly around her purse.
Shaun immediately stepped out onto the porch, moving to stand in front of me. “Stop right there, Evelyn. You’re violating the restraining order just by being on this property.”
“Please!” Evelyn sobbed, stopping at the foot of the porch steps, wringing her hands in desperation. “Please, Shaun, let me talk to Shannon! I’m begging you!”
I placed a gently restraining hand on Shaun’s arm, signaling for him to step aside. I stood up and looked down at my former mother-in-law.
“What do you want, Evelyn?” I asked, my voice cold and detached.
“Shannon... you have to stop this,” Evelyn wept, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks. “They arrested Ryan! The police came to his apartment two hours ago! They took him away in handcuffs, Shannon! They’re charging him with corporate fraud and tax evasion!”
“He committed corporate fraud and tax evasion, Evelyn,” I replied plainly. “I didn't arrest him. His own illegal actions did.”
“He’s your husband!” she cried out, taking a step up the stairs before Shaun gave her a sharp, warning glare, forcing her to freeze. “He’s the father of your children! How can you do this to him? If he goes to prison, his career is over! His life is destroyed!”
I let out a soft, humorless laugh, shaking my head in disbelief.
“Where was this concern when I was collapsing on the bathroom floor from physical exhaustion?” I asked, stepping to the edge of the porch, my voice ringing with righteous anger. “Where were you when your son left me alone with three sick infants without a car, without help, and without food, while he went to Cabo to drink on a yacht? Where were you, Evelyn?”
Evelyn winced, looking down at the wooden steps. “He... he was stressed, Shannon! He was working hard!”
“He was hiding money in your name, Evelyn!” I countered, pointing a finger at her. “You signed the corporate documents for Apex Horizons. You helped him hide half a million dollars from his own children! You were complicit in trying to starve us out!”
Evelyn went pale, her lips trembling. She knew I was right. The forensic audit had exposed her involvement as well, and her own legal standing was now hanging by a thread.
“Please, Shannon,” Evelyn begged, dropping to her knees right there on the grass, dropping all her upper-class pride. “I’m begging you as a mother. Drop the financial fraud charges. Tell the prosecutor it was a misunderstanding! I will give you money... I will pay for everything! Just don't send my son to prison!”
I looked down at the woman kneeling in the grass—the same woman who had spent five years making subtle, cruel comments about my inability to conceive, the same woman who had looked down on me for being a stay-at-home mother, the same woman who had actively cheered on her son’s emotional abuse.
“I am a mother, Evelyn,” I said, my voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. “And my priority is protecting Luna, Soleil, and Bodhi from a man who views them as disposable leverage. Ryan made his choices. He thought he was untouchable. He thought I was weak because I was quiet.”
I took a deep breath, standing tall.
“Get off my lawn, Evelyn. If you or Ryan ever come near my children again, I will have the sheriff arrest you too.”
Evelyn stared at me in horror, realizing that there was no weakness left in me to exploit. The timid, exhausted woman she had pushed around for years was completely gone. In her place stood a mother who had fought through hell to protect her family, and who had emerged totally victorious.
Slowly, weeping uncontrollably, Evelyn dragged herself up from the grass, got back into her car, and sped away into the gathering darkness.

Shaun looked over at me, a proud smile spreading across his face. “You handled that like a queen.”
“No,” I smiled faintly, looking back toward the open front door where the soft laughter of my babies echoed into the warm summer night. “I handled that like a mother.”
