Chapter 6 - THE UNEXPECTED ALLYZ

The threat Ryan left me with echoed in my head all Sunday long. Quitting his job was an nuclear move—a scorched-earth strategy designed to destroy his own life just to make sure I suffered. If he had no official income, the state guidelines for child support would drop to a pathetic, bare-minimum monthly amount. He was willing to sacrifice his high-powered executive career just to starve his own children out of spite.

On Monday morning, I sat at my parents' dining room table, surrounded by stacks of financial records, bills, and empty coffee mugs. My laptop screen glowed with job listings, but every corporate position required fifty hours a week—hours I couldn't commit to while raising six-month-old triplets without expensive full-time childcare.

A sharp knock on the front door shattered the silence.

Shaun went to answer it, opening the door cautiously. Standing on the porch was a person I never in a million years expected to see.

It was Chloe.

She looked entirely different from the arrogant mistress who had walked into the visitation center on Saturday. Her designer dress was replaced by simple jeans and a trench coat, her eye makeup was slightly smeared, and her hands were trembling as she clutched a heavy leather handbag to her chest.

“Is Shannon here?” Chloe asked, her voice quiet, shaking, and devoid of her previous arrogance.

Shaun crossed his arms, stepping into the doorway to block her. “You’ve got a lot of nerve coming here after the circus you pulled at the visitation center.”

“Please,” Chloe begged, her eyes brimming with genuine tears. “I need to talk to her. It’s about Ryan. I... I made a huge mistake, and I need to fix it before he ruins my life too.”

I stepped out into the hallway, holding Bodhi. I looked at Chloe carefully. I had every reason to turn her away, to scream at her, to slam the door in her face. But years of working in corporate finance had taught me one rule: When your enemy’s ally comes to you crying, you listen.

“Let her in, Shaun,” I said calmly.

Chloe walked into the kitchen, looking around the modest house with a mix of shame and anxiety. She sat down at the table, refusing a cup of water Shaun offered.

“Why are you here, Chloe?” I asked, taking a seat across from her.

Chloe took a deep breath, wiping a tear from her cheek. “Ryan lied to me, Shannon. He lied about everything. He told me you were abusive, that you were insane, that you were holding his children hostage for money. He promised me that once the divorce was final, he and I were going to buy a house in Malibu and start a life together.”

I let out a soft, sad sigh. “And you believed him.”

“I was an idiot,” Chloe sobbed, burying her face in her hands. “On Saturday, after you guys left the center, he came back to the car in a total rage. He started screaming at me, throwing things, punching the steering wheel. He blamed me for losing his visitation rights. When I tried to calm him down, he... he grabbed my arm so hard it left a bruise.”

She pulled back her sleeve, revealing a dark, purplish bruise shaped like fingers pressed into her pale skin.

My blood ran cold. Ryan had never been physically violent with me, but his emotional abuse had been intensifying for years. Seeing the mark on Chloe’s arm confirmed that his loss of control was escalating rapidly.

“I’m sorry he did that to you, Chloe,” I said softly, my voice filled with genuine empathy. “No woman deserves that.”

“That’s not all,” Chloe continued, her voice dropping to a whisper as she looked around nervously. “Yesterday, he forced me to go into the firm’s office with him after hours. He told me he was resigning, but he wasn't just resigning. He was deleting files. He used my master login credentials to access the firm’s internal servers to wipe all evidence of his consulting commissions.”

I sat up straight, every financial alarm bell ringing in my mind. “He used your credentials?”

“Yes!” Chloe cried out. “He told me if I didn't help him, he would tell the managing partners that I was the one who helped him embezzle money! He’s trying to set me up to take the fall for his financial crimes, Shannon! He’s going to ruin my career, my reputation, and send me to prison while he walks away with millions!”

She unzipped her large leather bag and pulled out a sleek, metallic external hard drive, placing it on the wooden table between us.

“What is that?” I asked.

“It’s a complete clone of the firm’s shadow database,” Chloe said, her voice shaking with adrenaline. “Before he deleted the files, I secretly backed up the entire server onto this drive. It contains every hidden payment, every offshore transfer, every illegal transaction Ryan made over the last three years—including the accounts he opened under his mother’s name.”

I stared at the black metallic box resting on the table. It was the absolute holy grail of evidence. It didn't just prove financial fraud; it proved intentional destruction of evidence, bank fraud, and corporate embezzlement.

“Why are you giving this to me?” I asked, looking up into Chloe’s terrified eyes.

“Because he’s a monster,” Chloe said bitterly, fresh tears falling down her cheeks. “He doesn't care about me, he doesn't care about you, and he doesn't care about those three innocent babies. He only cares about himself. I want him to pay for what he did to me. And I know you’re the only person smart enough to use this against him.”

I reached out and took the hard drive into my hands. The cool metal felt heavy, loaded with the weight of Ryan’s impending destruction.

“Thank you, Chloe,” I said quietly. “You’re going to need a good criminal defense lawyer. I’m going to give you Ms. Vance’s recommendation. If you cooperate with the authorities before Ryan realizes what you’ve done, you can protect yourself.”

Chloe nodded, wiping her face with a tissue. “Is it true... what he said about quitting his job to avoid paying child support?”

“Yes,” I replied, a cold, dangerous smile slowly spreading across my lips. “He thinks he outsmarted the system by having no income. But with this hard drive, he’s not just going to be broke. He’s going to be facing federal indictment.”

After Chloe left, I called Ms. Vance immediately.

“Ms. Vance,” I said, looking at the hard drive sitting next to my laptop. “Ryan’s mistress just handed me his entire hidden financial infrastructure on a silver platter. Every deleted record, every hidden bank account, and proof of evidence tampering.”

Ms. Vance gasped over the phone. “Shannon... if this data is verified, Ryan hasn't just lost his custody case. He’s committed federal corporate crimes. I’m calling the State Prosecutor and the forensic accounting team right now. We’re scheduling an emergency hearing with Judge Martinez for tomorrow morning.”

I hung up the phone and walked over to the cribs. I looked down at my three tiny children, sleeping peacefully side by side.

“Daddy wanted to leave us with twelve dollars,” I whispered to them softly, gently kissing each of their foreheads. “Tomorrow, we’re taking everything.”
