Chapter 6 - The Red Carpet Ambush

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was a spectacle of obscene wealth and power. Crystal chandeliers rained golden light down upon hundreds of men in tuxedoes and women in floor-length gowns. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, champagne, and corporate greed.
Julian Thorne stood near the center stage, holding a glass of vintage champagne, surrounded by a crowd of eager journalists, wealthy investors, and high-ranking European bank executives. He was in his element, radiating the supreme confidence of a man who believed he was entirely untouchable.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s voice echoed over the microphone as he took the stage, drawing the room’s attention. "Tonight, we celebrate the future of aviation. Apex Horizon, in strategic partnership with our global affiliates, is proud to announce the formal acquisition and patent filing for the world's first fully scalable, zero-emission hybrid turbine engine!"
The crowd broke into enthusiastic applause. Behind Julian, a massive high-definition screen lit up, displaying stylized 3D renderings of the revolutionary engine design—the exact design my father had spent the last years of his life perfecting in our Boston lab.
"This technological breakthrough will revolutionize global transport," Julian continued, smiling warmly at the European banking syndicate sitting in the front row. "And it represents a secure, highly profitable future for every partner sitting in this room tonight."
"It certainly would be revolutionary," a voice called out from the back of the room, clear, loud, and carrying over the quieted crowd. "If the technology actually belonged to you."
The entire ballroom turned in unison.
I stepped into the light of the main aisle, wearing a striking, blood-red silk gown that stood out sharply against the black-and-white crowd. Miriam walked a step behind me, carrying a sleek silver leather briefcase.
Julian’s smile froze on his face. A flicker of genuine panic flashed through his eyes before he quickly recovered, adjusting his tuxedo jacket with practiced calm.
"Eleanor," Julian said over the microphone, forced chuckles echoing through the speakers. "While I always appreciate the presence of a beautiful woman, this is a private investor summit. Security, please escort Mrs. Vance out of the building."
"It's Ms. Hartwell," I corrected sharply, taking confident steps down the center aisle, the crowd parting before me like the Red Sea. "And before your security touches me, Julian, I suggest you take a very close look at the main screens."
Miriam quickly plugged a small wireless receiver into a port near the sound booth. Instantly, the beautiful 3D graphics of the hybrid engine faded from the giant screen behind Julian.
In their place, massive high-resolution documents appeared: bank statements, wire transfers, audio transcriptions, and signed internal emails bearing the logo of Thorne Global Capital.
Gasps echoed through the opulent room.
"What is the meaning of this?" one of the lead European bankers demanded, standing up from his seat in shock. "Are those wire transfers from offshore shell entities?"
"Those are the real financial records of Apex Horizon," I announced, turning to face the room full of billionaires and journalists. "For the past three years, Julian Thorne has been conducting a fraudulent scheme to steal Hartwell Aviation's intellectual property. He bribed our former CEO, Daniel Vance, to siphon forty million dollars out of our company to artificially pad Apex Horizon's failing balance sheet!"
"This is absurd! She's a disgraced, bitter ex-wife making wild allegations!" Julian shouted, dropping his glass of champagne onto the stage, where it shattered into a thousand pieces. "Turn those screens off! Turn them off right now!"
"Read the screen, gentlemen!" I commanded, pointing directly at the financial ledger displayed above his head. "Julian Thorne didn't invent this engine. He stole it to secure a two-billion-dollar loan from the European Central Banking Syndicate because his own fund is entirely insolvent!"
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Financial journalists scrambled to take photos of the documents on the screen, flashbulbs exploding like blinding lightning. The bank executives immediately surrounded Julian, their faces dark with fury as they began yelling in frantic German and French.
Julian stood frozen on stage, staring at me as his carefully constructed world collapsed in front of the very people he had tried to deceive.

"You..." Julian spat, stepping down off the stage toward me, his face twisted in pure, unadulterated rage. "You ruined me!"
"No, Julian," I whispered as federal agents, accompanied by New York police officers, entered through the grand double doors of the ballroom. "You ruined yourself when you thought you could use my family's legacy as your personal bailout."
