Chapter 5 - The Encryption Key

The Boston townhouse was eerie in its quietness. This was the place Daniel had maintained under a fake corporate identity—the secret residence where he lived his double life with Vanessa and Noah while telling me he was away on business trips to London, Tokyo, and Zurich.
Stepping into the entryway felt like walking into an alternate reality. High-end modern art adorned the walls, expensive toys were scattered near the hallway archway, and a massive family portrait hung above the fireplace. But it wasn't my face in the picture beside Daniel. It was Vanessa's.
"This place costs forty thousand dollars a month in rent alone," Miriam remarked, shining her flashlight into the dimly lit study as the police tape flapped gently at the door frame. "Paid directly through an offshore account in the Bahamas."
"He spared no expense for his fantasy life," I said coldly, walking straight into the master suite closet.
The walk-in closet was larger than most apartment living rooms, packed with designer suits, silk dresses, and rows of expensive shoes. In the far corner sat Daniel's custom leather golf bag. I unzipped the side pocket, feeling along the thick inner lining until my fingers made contact with a small, hard, rectangular object.
I pulled it out. A metallic black flash drive encrypted with a biometric thumbprint scanner.
"Is that it?" Miriam asked, leaning in.
"This is the holy grail," I said, holding the small drive up to the dim light. "Daniel was paranoid. He kept a secondary record of every bribe, every legal document, and every communication with Julian Thorne as an insurance policy in case Julian ever tried to double-cross him."
"We need to get this to the forensic IT team immediately," Miriam urged. "Julian’s short-sell campaign against Hartwell stock starts in less than twelve hours. If we don't present this evidence to the SEC before the market opens, our stock will collapse."
"No," I said, clutching the flash drive tightly in my palm. "We aren't taking this to the SEC."
Miriam looked at me in absolute shock. "What? Eleanor, this drive contains the definitive proof of Julian's market manipulation and corporate sabotage! It's our only weapon to save the company!"
"If we give it to the SEC, Julian’s legal team will tie it up in federal court for years with motions, appeals, and jurisdiction challenges," I explained, my strategic mind working at lightning speed. "Julian is a billionaire, Miriam. He has a army of lawyers whose only job is to stall justice until the victim bleeds out financially. I don't want to tie him up in court. I want to obliterate him publicly."
"How?" Miriam asked, her eyes narrowing with equal parts worry and fascination.
"Julian is holding his annual Global Investor Summit tomorrow night at the Plaza Hotel in New York," I said, a dangerous smile spreading across my face. "Every major investor, bank executive, and financial journalist on Wall Street will be in that ballroom to celebrate his acquisition of Hartwell's engine patents. He thinks he's going to present his victory to the world."
"Eleanor... you aren't thinking of crashing the summit, are you?"
"I'm not crashing it, Miriam," I replied, walking out of the closet and leaving the ghost of Daniel's fake life behind. "I'm going to host the main event."
Two hours later, we were back at Hartwell Headquarters. The forensic team worked through the night, overriding the thumbprint lock using Daniel’s digitized biological data retrieved from his police booking. By 3:00 AM, the contents of the drive were fully laid out on the screens before us.
It was far worse than corporate sabotage.
Julian Thorne hadn't just been stealing our hybrid engine blueprints. The documents revealed that Julian’s hedge fund was on the verge of total financial collapse. He had over-leveraged billions of dollars in bad offshore investments, and he was using the stolen Hartwell engine patents as collateral to secure a massive two-billion-dollar bailout loan from a syndicate of European banks.
If those banks found out the patents were stolen and subject to immediate federal seizure, they would pull the loan, triggering an immediate margin call that would wipe out Julian Thorne's entire empire overnight.
"He wasn't trying to defeat us out of revenge," I murmured, staring at the financial spreadsheets on the monitor. "He was stealing from us because he was desperate. He's bleeding money."

"It's a house of cards," Miriam breathed in awe. "And Daniel was holding the match."
"And tomorrow night," I said, closing the laptop with a definitive snap, "I'm going to strike it."
