Chapter 8: Venom from the Shadows

Chapter 8: Venom from the Shadows
While Valeria was building a haven for survivors, the toxicity of the Mendoza legacy was attempting to claw its way back to the surface.
In a slick, glass-walled corporate office across town, Héctor Mendoza—Julián’s cousin and the current CEO of the family’s primary holding company—slammed his fist onto a marble conference table. Surrounding him were high-priced PR consultants and corporate lawyers.
"Our third-quarter projections are down fifteen percent!" Héctor roared. "Every time that woman opens her mouth on television or at a summit, the Mendoza name is dragged through the mud. We are losing investors, our banking partners are conducting 'ethical audits,' and it’s all because of Julián’s utter stupidity and his vindictive ex-wife!"
"Sir, legally, we cannot sue her for defamation," the lead attorney stated calmly. "Everything she says is a matter of public court record. The forgery, the abuse, the fraud—it's all proven. Any lawsuit we file will only bring more negative press and force us to open our own financial books for discovery."
Héctor’s eyes narrowed. "Then we don't use the courts. We use the press. Find something on her. Find a flaw, a past mistake, an old relationship—anything to paint her as unstable. If she wants to play the saintly advocate, let's see how she handles a smear campaign."
Within days, the narrative began to shift on certain tabloid websites and social media channels. Orchestrated bots and paid commentators began questioning Valeria's motives. Why did she stay so long if it was so bad? Was she just after the Mendoza assets? Is her father using her trauma for political leverage?
Ernesto brought the articles to Valeria, his face flushed with anger. "This is Héctor's doing. I know his style. It’s dirty, and it’s deliberate."
Valeria read the vicious comments online. A year ago, these words would have broken her spirit, making her retreat into her shell. Today, she simply smiled a cold, sharp smile.
"They are desperate, Dad," Valeria said quietly. "They are attacking my character because they can't attack my facts. They think public opinion is something they can buy, just like Julián thought he could buy my silence."
Instead of hiding, Valeria scheduled a live, unedited television interview with the country's top investigative journalist. When the host directly asked her about the online rumors painting her as a bitter woman seeking financial revenge, Valeria looked directly into the camera lens.

"The Mendoza corporation claims I am destroying their reputation," Valeria said, her voice steady and razor-sharp. "I am not destroying it; I am simply shining a light on it. If a family empire collapses because one woman told the truth about how they treat human beings, then that empire deserved to fall. To Héctor Mendoza and anyone funding this smear campaign, I say this: spend your money on lawyers, because the Women's Justice Center is officially launching an investigation into your company's historic handling of female employees. Let’s see what else you’ve been hiding in the dark."
The interview blew the corporate smear campaign out of the water. Héctor’s PR strategy backfired spectacularly, causing three major board members to resign the following morning. The venom from the shadows had failed to poison her; it had only fueled her fire.
