Chapter 5: Echoes in the Dark

The maximum-security prison on the outskirts of the state was a brutal, gray monolith. Inside its sterile visiting room, divided by a thick pane of reinforced glass, Julián Mendoza sat in an orange jumpsuit. The arrogance that had once defined his handsome face had completely withered away. His hair was clipped short, his jawline was sunken, and his hands trembled slightly as he picked up the gray telephone receiver.

On the other side of the glass sat Ofelia. The months in the women's correctional facility had not been kind to her either. Her expensive designer clothes had been replaced by a drab uniform, and her perfectly coiffed hair was now streaked with unkept gray. Yet, her eyes still burned with the bitter malice that had poisoned her son’s life.

"The appeals lawyer called me yesterday," Julián muttered into the receiver, his voice hollow. "He said there’s no ground for a retrial. The body camera footage from the party... they’re using it as a textbook example of an uncoerced confession. I’m stuck here, Mom. For fifteen years."

Ofelia slammed her free hand against the glass, startling the guard standing in the corner. "Don't you dare give up!" she hissed, her voice cracking through the static of the phone line. "This is all a conspiracy. That old man, Ernesto, planned this from the very beginning. And that ungrateful little brat Valeria... she’s living in our house, spending our money!"

"It was never our money, Mom," Julián said quietly, a sudden, heavy wave of realization washing over him.

For the first time in his life, stripped of his wealth, his status, and his mother’s shielding influence, Julián was forced to look at the wreckage of his actions. In the isolation of his cell, the echoes of his own voice from the birthday recording played on a loop in his mind. “I gave her an early birthday present—a slap.” He remembered the absolute terror in Valeria’s eyes, a terror he had mistaken for respect. He had thought himself a king, but looking at his mother’s bitter, hateful expression across the glass, he realized he had just been a well-dressed monster.

"If you hadn't told me to forge those deeds so quickly..." Julián started, his tone turning resentful.

"Are you blaming me?!" Ofelia gasped, her expression twisting into utter disbelief. "I protected you! I hid her crying from the neighbors! I told you how to handle her when she grew defiant! I did everything for you!"

"And look where we are," Julián said, staring at his mother with a sudden, profound disgust.

He realized then that their bond wasn't built on love; it was built on control, greed, and a shared cruelty. Without a victim to torment, they were turning on each other. Slowly, deliberately, Julián hung up the receiver. He stood up and signaled to the guard, turning his back on his mother’s frantic, screaming face behind the glass. As he walked back to his dark cell, he finally understood the true weight of his sentence: he was trapped forever with the ghost of the man he had chosen to be.
