Chapter 5 - The Trap Is SetZ

The county courthouse was a cold, imposing granite monster rising out of the downtown fog on Friday morning. I walked up the broad stone steps holding Owen’s hand tightly in mine. He wore a neat dark suit we had bought at a discount store, his new glasses resting comfortably on his nose. He looked brave, but I could feel the tremor in his small fingers.
Inside courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Rick was already sitting at the defense table beside a slick, high-priced attorney in an Italian suit. Rick looked surprisingly pristine—shaved, wearing an expensive grey suit, playing the part of a distraught, reformed father to absolute perfection. When we walked in, he turned and gave me a look of desperate, wounded sorrow. It made me want to vomit.
Judge Marcus, a stern woman in her late fifties with sharp gray eyes, presided over the bench.
"We are here today regarding the emergency petition filed by Mr. Richard Vance, formerly known as Eric Miller, regarding the temporary custody and legal status of the minor, Owen Vance," Judge Marcus announced, her voice echoing off the high oak paneling.
Rick’s attorney, Mr. Sterling, stood up immediately. "Your Honor, my client is a deeply remorseful man who made tragic mistakes in his youth during a time of extreme emotional distress. However, Mrs. Clara Miller knowingly excluded my client from the medical decision regarding an invasive ocular surgery on his biological son. Furthermore, she has unlawfully absconded with the child, depriving my client of his fundamental parental rights!"
Sarah stood up calmly, her presence radiating iron authority. "Your Honor, that narrative is a fantasy crafted to obscure a crime. Five years ago, Mr. Vance abandoned his visually impaired son at a child care facility after embezzling over $100,000 intended for the child's medical treatment. He then fraudulently married my client under an assumed name, lied about his identity, and deliberately attempted to sabotage the child's sight restoration to conceal his past crimes!"
The courtroom gallery gasped. Judge Marcus raised her hand, silencing the room, her eyes narrowing as she glared down at Rick.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Marcus said, her tone icy. "Is your client denying that he is the biological father who placed this child in a care facility five years ago under a different legal name?"
Sterling hesitated, shifting his weight. "Your Honor, Mr. Vance admits to his past identity, but asserts he was attempting to rebuild his life to eventually reunite—"
"Save it, Counsel," Judge Marcus cut him off sharply. She looked over her glasses at Rick. "Mr. Vance, child abandonment is a felony. Fraud is a felony. You stand in my court claiming parental rights over a child you left in an institution while pocketing his medical trust?"
Rick suddenly stood up, ignoring his lawyer’s frantic arm gestures to sit down. "Your Honor! Please!" Rick cried out, his voice cracking with orchestrated emotion. "I made terrible mistakes! But I love my son! Clara turned him against me! She manipulated the adoption process because she was desperate to be a mother! She knew who Owen was all along! She planned this to ruin me!"
I slammed my hands on the table, starting to stand, but Sarah placed a firm, restraining hand on my forearm.
"That is a lie!" I shouted, unable to fully contain myself. "You lied to me every single day for seven years!"
"Silence in my court!" Judge Marcus slammed her gavel down, the sharp crack ringing through the room.
The judge took a deep breath, reviewing the documents in front of her. The silence in the room was absolute; I could hear the racing of my own heart in my ears.
"Given the severe criminal allegations of fraud, abandonment, and embezzlement, this court is ordering an immediate freeze on all assets associated with Mr. Richard Vance," Judge Marcus declared firmly. "Furthermore, a temporary protective order is issued prohibiting Mr. Vance from coming within 1,000 feet of the minor, Owen, or Mrs. Clara Miller pending full criminal investigation."
Relief flooded through my chest so fast I nearly dropped to my knees. But Judge Marcus wasn't done.
"However," the judge continued, looking directly at me with a solemn gaze, "due to the complex legal irregularity surrounding the original adoption papers signed under a fraudulent identity, the legal adoption is temporarily stayed. Temporary physical custody remains with Mrs. Clara Miller under court supervision, pending a full welfare review by Child Protective Services in thirty days."
It wasn't a total victory, but it was a lifeline. Owen was staying with me.
As we exited the courtroom, Sterling and Rick were swarmed by two plainclothes police officers who had been waiting in the hallway. Sarah had alerted the local detective division prior to the hearing regarding the old grand larceny warrant from Ohio.
"Richard Vance, you are under arrest for grand larceny and outstanding fraud warrants," the lead officer announced, pulling Rick’s arms behind his back and clicking hand-cuffs over his wrists.

Rick struggled against the officers, his pristine grey suit rumpling as they forced him toward the elevators. As he passed us, his eyes locked onto mine. There was no sadness left in them—only pure, unadulterated venom.
"You think you won, Clara?" Rick hissed, a sickening smile twisting his lips. "You haven't won anything. You don't know what I left behind in that house."
