Zero nine

Chapter 3 - The Buried TruthZ

Sleep didn't come that night. I sat on the edge of Owen’s bed until the early morning hours, listening to his steady breathing. Every minor creak of the house made my heart leap into my throat. Every shadow outside his bedroom window looked like a threat.

At dawn, I called my long-time friend and attorney, Sarah Jenkins. By 8:00 AM, we were sitting in her high-rise office downtown, the bright morning sun pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting stark shadows across her mahogany desk. Owen was in the waiting room with Sarah's legal assistant, happily coloring in a book with his newly recovered, albeit hazy, vision.

Sarah put down a thick yellow legal pad and rubbed her temples. Her expression was grave.

"Clara, if what you're telling me is true, this isn't just a messy divorce," Sarah said, her tone razor-sharp. "This is a legal minefield. If Rick is Owen's biological father, he committed extreme child abandonment. Furthermore, his consent on the adoption papers under a false narrative could jeopardize the legality of the adoption itself."

"What do you mean?" I asked, my breath hitching. "Can they take Owen away from me?"

"No one is taking him away to a home, not on my watch," Sarah reassured me firmly. "But biologically, Rick still holds rights if his paternity is legally proven, unless we formally terminate them based on severe neglect and abandonment. But Clara, there’s something bigger here that doesn't add up. Why didn't Rick just confess when you first brought up adoption? Why let you bring Owen into your home at all?"

"Because he was a coward," I said bitterly. "He thought he could push the adoption away without telling me the real reason. When I refused to back down, he surrendered because he was terrified I would leave him if he fought too hard."

"Maybe," Sarah mused, leaning back in her leather chair. "Or maybe he was terrified of someone looking into his past. I ran a quick preliminary background check on 'Richard Vance' before you got here. Clara... Richard Vance didn't just vanish five years ago. He was declared missing by a local sheriff's department in Ohio before he surfaced in this state with a legal name change."

My blood ran cold. "Missing?"

"His former wife—Owen’s biological mother—was named Elena Vance," Sarah continued, reading from her screen. "She died four years ago from acute renal failure. But five years ago, right around the time Owen was placed in the orphanage, Elena filed a domestic police report against Richard Vance for grand larceny. She accused him of stealing over $100,000 from a trust fund set up for Owen’s medical care after his accident."

I covered my mouth with both hands. The pieces of the dark puzzle were beginning to fall into place, forming a picture far more sinister than simple cowardice.

Rick hadn't just abandoned his blind son. He had robbed him. He had stolen the money meant to fix Owen’s eyes, left his wife to die in poverty, and fled across state lines to start a brand new, clean life with me—a woman whose bakery income and savings he slowly integrated into his own financial web over seven years.

"He didn't just hate the idea of the surgery because of the money," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical punch. "He knew that if Owen got his sight back, Owen would recognize him. The surgery wasn't just a threat to his secret; it was a threat to his freedom. If Owen talked, the police would re-open the fraud and larceny investigation."

"Exactly," Sarah said, her voice dropping. "And right now, Rick knows his clock is ticking. He has everything to lose—his career, his reputation, and his freedom. You need to be extremely careful, Clara."

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed violently on the desk. It was an unknown number. I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the screen, before clicking answer and putting it on speaker.

"Clara," Rick’s voice rasped through the speaker. He sounded unhinged, his breathing fast and ragged. "Don't hang up. Please, just listen to me."

"You have five seconds to tell me where you are before I hand this phone to my lawyer and the police," I said, my voice dead and cold.

"You don't understand the whole story!" Rick pleaded, his tone desperate, almost manic. "Elena was insane! She was ruining my life! That money... that money was mine to begin with! I took what belonged to me! I tried to give Owen a good life, Clara! I brought him to a good facility!"

"You left a four-year-old blind boy in an orphanage after stealing his surgery fund!" I yelled into the phone, tears of sheer rage scorching my eyes. "You are a monster, Rick!"

"I loved you, Clara!" he shouted back, his voice cracking. "Everything I built with you was real! But if you take this to the authorities, if you let that boy destroy what we have, I swear to God, Clara, no one wins. You think you can raise him alone? You think you can protect him from what’s coming? I will take every cent from our joint accounts. I will drag you through court until you are penniless!"

"Try it," I snapped. "I will spend every breath in my body making sure you rot in a cell."

"You made your choice," Rick whispered, his voice suddenly dropping into a low, terrifying calm that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Don't say I didn't warn you."

May you like

The line went dead.

I looked up at Sarah. Her eyes were wide. "We need to get a restraining order immediately," she said, pulling a stack of legal forms toward her. "And Clara... you and Owen cannot go back to your house tonight."
