Chapter 9 - VERDICT AND CONFESSIONZ

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—one of the fastest deliberations in county history for a high-profile felony case.

When the bailiff called the courtroom back to order, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

“Will the defendant please stand,” Judge Jenkins commanded.

Richard Pierce stood up slowly, supported by his public defender. He maintained a stoic, detached expression, refusing to look at the jury panel.

“In the matter of the State versus Richard Pierce,” the jury foreperson, a middle-aged school teacher, read aloud from the paper, “on Count One: Attempted First-Degree Murder... we find the defendant, GUILTY.”

A collective gasp swept through the gallery.

“On Count Two: Aggravated Child Abuse... GUILTY.”

“On Count Three: Assault with a Deadly Weapon... GUILTY.”

“On Count Four: Felony Evasion and Endangerment... GUILTY.”

Guilty on all counts.

Richard’s public defender closed his eyes and sighed softly. Richard himself remained completely still, his jaw clenching tightly, his chest rising and falling in shallow breaths.

Judge Jenkins looked down at the convicted felon. “Mr. Pierce, do you have anything to say before sentencing is scheduled?”

Richard looked up at the bench. Then, slowly, he turned his head toward Claire.

For the first time since the ordeal began, the polished facade of the high-society patriarch cracked completely. A dark, twisted grin spread across his pale, bloodless lips.

“I was the one who built everything,” Richard said softly, his voice picking up on the microphone, cold and trembling with raw hatred. “My son was nothing without me. My daughter was nothing without me. And you... you were a nobody from a working-class neighborhood who thought she could come into my house and tell me how to raise my grandchild.”

The judge slammed her gavel down. “Mr. Pierce, control yourself!”

“I don't regret a single second of it!” Richard shouted, his voice rising into a terrifying screech that echoed through the packed courtroom. “She needed to know who was in charge! She needed to know that everything in that family belonged to ME! You think putting me in a cage changes anything, Claire? Every time you look at your daughter’s face, every time you see those scars, you will think of ME! I will be in your head for the rest of your life!”

Bailiffs rushed forward, grabbing Richard’s arms, forcing him back into his chair as the gallery erupted into noise.

Claire didn't flinch. She didn't cry. She didn't cower.

She stood up slowly, holding Emma’s hand, looking down at the raving old man being restrained by three officers.

“No, Richard,” Claire said quietly, her voice carrying over the chaos of the courtroom. “When I look at my daughter’s face, I don't see you. I see a survivor. And when I look at you, I see a pathetic old man who is going to die alone in the dark.”

Judge Jenkins slammed her gavel down three times. “Order in the court! Defendant is remanded to state custody without bail pending sentencing! Court is adjourned!”

As the bailiffs dragged a cursing, shouting Richard Pierce through the side door toward the holding cells, Claire walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight, holding her daughter’s hand tight, leaving the shadows of the Pierce family behind them forever.
