Chapter 6 - HIGHWAY TO HELLZ

The rain turned into a blinding snowstorm as Claire navigated the slick, winding roads leading toward the city center. The dark SUV behind her was relentlessly pursuing, its high beams flashing bright in her rearview mirror, blinding her.
“Hang on, Emma!” Claire yelled, tightening her grip on the wheel as her sedan skidded across a patch of black ice.
The SUV surged forward, slamming its front bumper into Claire’s rear frame. The violent impact sent a sickening crunch of metal echoing through the cabin. Emma screamed from the backseat.
“Stop it!” Claire cried out, fighting to keep control of the vehicle.
The SUV pulled up alongside her driver’s side window. Through the tinted glass, as the heavy vehicle brushed against her doors with a screeching sound of tearing metal, Claire caught a glimpse of the driver.
It wasn't a hired thug.
It was Daniel.
His face was contorted in sheer panic and rage, shouting something she couldn't hear over the roaring wind and rain. Beside him in the passenger seat sat Richard Pierce himself—his expression cold, calm, and utterly detached, like a commander watching a battle from afar.
Richard was in the car.
Daniel swerved his vehicle into Claire’s car again, trying to force her off the road toward the guardrail over the river bridge.
“Daniel, stop!” Claire screamed, pressing her horn continuously. “You’re going to kill us!”
Through the window, Claire saw Richard reach over, grab the steering wheel from Daniel’s hands, and yank it violently toward Claire’s car.
The SUV smashed into Claire’s driver-side door with immense force. The glass shattered into a million tiny fragments. Claire’s sedan spun out of control, tires screeching in agony, crashing hard into the concrete divider of the bridge before grinding to a halt.
Smoke billowed from under the hood. The air bag had deployed, stinging Claire’s face and chest.
“Emma!” Claire gasped, her vision spinning as she forced herself to turn around. “Emma, are you okay?”
In the back, Emma was crying hysterically, clutching her arm, but she was conscious. “Mommy! Mommy!”
Claire struggled with her seatbelt, unbuckling it, but her driver-side door was crushed shut.
Outside, through the shattered window, she saw the dark SUV pull up a few feet ahead. The doors opened.
Daniel stepped out first, looking horrified at the wrecked sedan, trembling as he stumbled toward them. “Claire! Emma! Oh God!”
Behind him, Richard stepped out, wearing a long black wool coat, holding a heavy metal crowbar he had pulled from the SUV’s trunk. He pushed Daniel aside effortlessly.
“Get back in the car, Daniel,” Richard ordered coldly, his voice echoing over the roaring wind. “Let me finish this.”
“Dad, no!” Daniel pleaded, grabbing his father’s arm. “You said we were just going to pull her over! You said we were just getting Emma back!”
Richard turned and slapped Daniel across the face with brutal force, sending his son sprawling onto the frozen pavement. “You spineless weakling! She was going to ruin everything! She was going to put me in prison!”
Richard walked up to Claire’s crushed driver-side door, raising the crowbar. His face was twisted into a grotesque mask of rage.
“You should have taken the ten million, Claire,” Richard snarled, his eyes dark and empty. “You just didn't know when to shut your mouth.”
He raised the crowbar to smash through the remaining glass directly at Claire’s head.
Claire reached into her purse on the passenger seat, her blood-stained fingers wrapping around the cold steel of the heavy glass snow globe Emma had given her for Christmas three years ago—the one she kept in her bag for good luck.
As Richard swung the crowbar down, Claire thrust her arm through the shattered window and slammed the heavy glass globe with all her remaining strength directly into Richard’s face.
The thick glass shattered on impact. Richard let out a muffled roar of pain, stumbling backward, clutching his bloody nose and eye.
At that exact moment, siren lights flashed red and blue through the blinding snowstorm. Three police cruisers roared onto the bridge, tires screeching, blocking both ends of the roadway.

Detective Laura Bennett leapt out of the lead cruiser, her service weapon drawn and aimed straight at Richard.
“POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!”
