Zero nine

Chapter 5

The sharp click of the operative's rifle hammer echoed inside the smoke-filled elevator cab like a thunderclap.

Rebecca closed her eyes, bracing her body over Sophie, ready to take the impact of the bullets. She felt Sophie’s small frame trembling beneath her, heard the frantic, hyperventilating gasps of the child who had already suffered so much.

CLANG-BANG!

A heavy, explosive impact rattled the outer doors of the elevator shaft on Basement Level 2.

Before the operative could depress the trigger, the heavy double steel doors of the elevator cab were violently wedged open from the outside by a hydraulic spread-tool. The steel buckled with a screeching groan, tearing open a three-foot gap directly at floor level between the bottom of the suspended elevator cab and the basement floor below.

"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"

A barrage of blinding white tactical flashlights cut through the grey chemical smoke through the newly opened floor gap.

STAT-STAT-STAT-STAT!

A hail of high-caliber suppressive fire erupted from the basement corridor outside. The operative pointing his rifle at Rebecca was struck twice in the chest body armor, the violent kinetic force knocking him backward against the elevator controls.

The second operative on the roof hatch yelled something in a foreign language into his comm-link, grabbed his wounded partner by his tactical vest, and threw an orange smoke canister onto the elevator floor.

WHOOSH!

Dense, suffocating orange smoke billowed through the cabin, completely blinding everyone inside. Rebecca coughed violently, keeping her arms wrapped like iron bands around Sophie as the sounds of shouting, boots pounding on metal, and rapid gunfire echoed through the shaft above as the two tactical operatives retreated up the elevator cables.

"GET THEM OUT! NOW! NOW! NOW!"

Strong hands reached into the floor gap from the basement corridor. Two FBI SWAT officers wearing full tactical gear and gas masks breached the torn steel elevator doors.

"Dr. Lawson! Grab my hands!" an officer barked, reaching down through the dark gap.

Rebecca didn't waste a second. "Take Sophie first! Take the child!"

Working with rapid, practiced precision, the tactical officers reached into the elevator, unhooking Sophie’s transport straps and lifting her delicate frame down through the gap into the safety of the basement corridor. Rebecca scrambled right behind her, ducking under the jagged steel edge of the crushed elevator doors.

Behind them, officers dragged the bleeding Detective Ortiz and the stunned Naomi Ellis out into the corridor. Dr. Chen was pulled out next, groggily rubbing his bleeding head as paramedics who had accompanied the SWAT team immediately swarmed the area.

"We have the target secure! Repeat, Asset is secure!" the lead SWAT officer yelled into his shoulder mic. "Moving to armored transport on Sub-Level 2!"

The basement corridor was a scene of full military mobilization. Dozens of heavily armed federal agents held tactical angles at every doorway, their rifle lights sweeping the concrete ceiling pipes.

Rebecca ran alongside the rolling gurney as paramedics pushed Sophie at a dead sprint down the long, concrete utility corridor. Sophie was weeping, her face pale white, clutching Rebecca's hand so tightly her fingernails dug into Rebecca's skin.

"Mom... Mom... they were going to kill us..." Sophie sobbed, her breath coming in ragged, painful hitches.

"I know, baby, I know," Rebecca gasped, her own lungs burning from the acrid flashbang smoke. "But you're safe now. Look at me. You're safe. We have the FBI with us."

They reached the end of the long utility tunnel. Double reinforced security doors burst open, revealing the subterranean parking garage beneath the pediatric research facility.

Waiting in the middle of the empty, concrete garage were three matte-black, armored Chevrolet Suburbans with blacked-out windows and flashing concealed emergency lights.

Agent Evelyn Vance stood by the open rear door of the center vehicle, surrounded by four heavily armed federal officers holding perimeter positions.

"Get her inside!" Vance ordered, gesturing frantically to the armored Suburban. "The local precinct has been compromised. We are taking Sophie directly to a secure medical bunker at the FBI Academy in Quantico."

The medical team quickly lifted Sophie off the gurney and secured her into the integrated medical harness inside the rear cabin of the armored vehicle. Rebecca climbed in right beside her, taking her place on the bench seat, holding Sophie’s hand as the heavy, bulletproof door slammed shut with a solid, airtight THUD.

The interior of the Suburban was equipped like a mobile intensive care unit, featuring glowing heart monitors, oxygen delivery systems, and direct encrypted comm-link screens mounted on the partition wall.

Agent Vance slid into the front passenger seat, snapping her seatbelt into place as the heavy engine roared to life with a deep, thunderous V8 rumble.

"Driver, move out! Priority Alpha clearance to Highway 95 North!" Vance commanded.

The three armored vehicles accelerated sharply out of the subterranean garage, their tires screeching against the polished concrete as they burst through the exit gates out into the heavy, torrential rainstorm that had just broken over Richmond.

Outside, the city was bathed in flashing red and blue lights. Emergency vehicles, fire trucks, and police cruisers were converging on Riverside Children's Hospital as news of the explosion and gun battle in the elevator bank spread across the emergency frequencies.

Inside the quiet, heavily soundproofed interior of the armored Suburban, Rebecca pulled a warm wool blanket over Sophie’s shoulders. She adjusted the child's oxygen mask, gently wiping away the smudge of black soot on Sophie's cheek.

"How are her vitals?" Rebecca asked the federal flight medic who was sitting opposite them in the vehicle cabin.

"Heart rate is coming down—110 beats per minute," the medic replied, checking the digital readout on his wrist monitor. "Blood oxygen is good at ninety-eight percent on two liters of O2. The wrist fracture is stable in the splint. She's in mild shock, but physically she's holding up remarkably well."

Sophie looked up at Rebecca, her blue eyes wide in the soft amber light of the vehicle's interior cabin. "Mom... where is dad? Did they... did the bad men take him?"

Agent Vance turned around in her front seat, looking at Rebecca and Sophie through the partition window. Her expression was solemn and cold.

"Sophie," Vance said gently, her usual legal sharpness softening slightly. "I think you need to know the truth. Five minutes ago, Virginia State Police located the transport van that Vanguard used to abduct your father."

Rebecca felt her breath hitch. "Where?"

"Off Route 60, near the James River canal," Vance said quietly. "The vehicle was abandoned and burned. Inside... investigators found the body of Preston Hale."

Sophie didn't scream. She didn't cry. A strange, hollow stillness settled over the twelve-year-old girl. She stared blankly at the dark, rain-streaked bulletproof glass of the Suburban window as the flashing lights of the city faded into the dark highway behind them.

The man who had raised her, the father who had terrorized her, the man who had thrown her down a staircase to protect his dirty secrets—was dead. Killed by the very criminal empire he had tried to sell his soul to join.

"He told me..." Sophie whispered softly, her voice cracking in the quiet cabin, "...he told me that if I just kept my mouth shut... everything would be fine. He said the family name was the only thing that mattered."

Rebecca pulled Sophie close, pressing her cheek against the child's soft hair, feeling the silent tears finally beginning to spill from Sophie's eyes onto her jacket. "The family name meant nothing to him, Sophie. But you... you are strong. You survived him. You saved lives today."

"It's not over yet, Dr. Lawson," Agent Vance said, turning back to the front and looking at the glowing tactical display on the vehicle's dashboard. "Preston's death closes the local homicide investigation, but Vanguard Capital realizes that the digital key Sophie downloaded contains the names of every public official, judge, and foreign contact on their payroll across the East Coast."

Vance pointed to the radar screen on the console. A red blinking dot had just appeared five miles behind their three-vehicle convoy on the rain-slicked highway.

"We have an unidentified, high-speed vehicle closing in on our rear perimeter," the driver reported calmly, his hands gripping the steering wheel tight as he accelerated to eighty miles per hour through the blinding rainstorm. "It's an unplated, heavy-duty commercial truck. It just blew through the state police roadblock on Interstate 95."

Rebecca looked out the small rear window of the Suburban.

Through the thick curtain of pouring rain and highway spray, two massive, blinding halogen headlights materialized out of the darkness, barreling down the highway directly toward their armored convoy like a terrifying, iron leviathan.
