Zero nine

Chapter 4

The silence that fell over the trauma suite was far more terrifying than the shouting matches that had preceded it. The soft, mechanical humming of the life support equipment suddenly sounded like a countdown timer.

Rebecca felt all the blood drain from her face. She looked down at Sophie, whose small body had gone completely rigid in her arms. The child’s eyes were wide with a fresh, paralyzing wave of terror.

"The ledger..." Sophie whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the air circulation vents. "The blue folder in dad’s safe... it had a black hard drive inside it with a foreign emblem... a silver falcon."

"Vanguard Capital," Detective Ortiz confirmed grimly, pulling his service weapon from its holster and checking the magazine chamber before snapping it back into place. "That's their corporate crest. Sophie, did you copy the contents of that black drive onto your phone?"

Sophie nodded slowly, her bottom lip trembling violently. "I... I didn't know what it was. I thought it was just financial proof that dad was lying about his income for the custody court. When I plugged it into my tablet, it asked for a master key. I used the security sequence I saw dad type into his office computer last month... and the whole drive opened up. It had thousands of names, accounts in Zurich, and lists of shipments coming through the Port of Richmond."

"She didn't just uncover domestic fraud," Agent Evelyn Vance said, her face hardening as she pulled a secure satellite phone from her coat. "She uncovered an international money-laundering network operating right out of Virginia's commercial ports. Vanguard isn't just an equity firm—it's a front for the Russian-backed Solntsevskaya syndicate. If they realize Sophie successfully downloaded that master key, this hospital is no longer a safe zone."

"We need to move her immediately," Rebecca said, her clinical instincts kicking into high gear. She turned to Dr. Chen. "Marcus, I need portable oxygen, a spinal stabilization board, and a full transport kit. We cannot leave her in this room. If Vanguard has access to high-level security jammers and tactical teams, Riverside's municipal guards won't hold them for five minutes."

"I’ll clear the subterranean utility tunnel," Dr. Chen said without hesitation, already rushing toward the medical supply cabinet. "It leads directly from the basement morgue to the underground parking garage under the pediatric research center. No public cameras, no main corridor access."

"Agent Vance," Ortiz said, turning to the federal lawyer. "Call in an armed tactical escort from the FBI field office in Quantico. We need an armored transport unit at the subterranean exit in ten minutes."

"Already calling," Vance replied, stepping out into the hallway as she dialed an emergency priority line.

Rebecca leaned over Sophie, gently putting her hands on the girl's face. "Sophie, listen to me very carefully. We are going to move you right now. I am going to stay right beside you every single second. Do you understand me? I am not leaving your side."

Sophie swallowed hard, wiping her tears with the back of her uninjured hand. "Mom... what about dad? Is he... are they going to kill him?"

Rebecca looked at her stepdaughter, seeing the agonizing mixture of fear, grief, and betrayal in the young girl's eyes. Despite everything Preston had done—the beatings, the emotional torture, the lies—he was still her father.

"The police and the FBI are doing everything they can to find him, sweetie," Rebecca lied softly, knowing in her heart that if Vanguard had taken Preston, he was already as good as dead. "Right now, our only job is keeping you safe."

Dr. Chen returned carrying a heavy transport gurney equipped with portable monitors and a dark transport blanket. Within three minutes, they carefully transferred Sophie onto the mobile unit, securing her neck brace and wrapping her fractured arm in a protective vacuum splint.

"Ortiz, you lead," Rebecca instructed, grabbing the IV pole attached to the gurney. "Marcus, stay at the rear control. If anyone tries to stop us in the hall, don't ask questions."

They moved out of Trauma Room 1, cutting sharply to the left into a restricted service corridor marked STAFF ONLY - AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered rhythmically as they pushed the heavy gurney down the narrow, cinderblock hallway toward the service elevator.

The hospital around them was in chaos. News of Preston Hale's arrest and the federal raid on the Hale estate had hit the local news networks, and the main lobby three floors above was swarming with reporters, camera crews, and confused patients. But down in the service corridors, the air was cold, damp, and eerily quiet.

They reached the heavy steel doors of the service elevator. Ortiz pressed the call button repeatedly, his eyes scanning the surrounding doors with heightened alertness.

DING.

The heavy steel elevator doors slid open. The interior was empty, lit by a single buzzing overhead panel.

"In, quickly," Ortiz ordered, stepping inside first with his gun drawn, checking the corners.

Rebecca and Chen pushed the gurney inside, followed by Naomi Ellis. Agent Vance stayed behind on the floor above to coordinate with the incoming FBI SWAT team.

Ortiz pulled out a master keycard, swiped it across the restricted panel, and pressed the button for BASEMENT LEVEL 2 - UTILITY & MAINTENANCE.

The doors slid shut, and the elevator began its rattling descent into the foundations of the hospital.

Inside the small steel enclosure, the tension was suffocating. Sophie reached out, taking hold of Rebecca’s hand again. Her heart rate monitor hummed a steady, anxious seventy-eight beats per minute.

"Rebecca," Naomi whispered nervously, looking up at the illuminated floor indicator as it passed floor after floor. "If Vanguard has people inside the city, how did they know Preston was being moved? The transport details were classified."

"They have someone inside the prosecutor's office or the department," Ortiz said through gritted teeth, his hand tightening on his weapon. "Which means we can't trust any standard police comms right now. Once we get to the basement, we take my unmarked cruiser, not the standard police transport."

Suddenly, the elevator jarred violently.

A sharp, metallic screech echoed through the shaft above them, followed by the sickening sound of grinding gears. The elevator shuddered violently, throwing everyone against the steel walls, before coming to a sudden, violent halt between Basement Level 1 and Basement Level 2.

The overhead lights flickered twice and died completely, plunging the elevator into pitch-black darkness.

"Sophie!" Rebecca screamed, instantly reaching out in the dark until her hands found the child’s shoulders on the gurney. "I'm here! I'm right here!"

Sophie shrieked in terror as the emergency red backup lights kicked on with a low, buzzing hum, bathing the small elevator cabin in a terrifying, blood-red glow.

"What the hell happened?!" Dr. Chen yelled, scrambling to check the gurney's battery-powered monitor systems.

Ortiz slammed his hand against the emergency alarm button. Nothing happened. The intercom speaker was dead.

"The main power grid for the service bank was manually cut," Ortiz said, his voice cold and sharp. He pulled his tactical flashlight from his belt, illuminating the ceiling hatch of the elevator shaft. "They didn't just cut the power. They tripped the emergency cable brakes from the central control room."

From directly above them, in the dark elevator shaft overhead, came the muffled, heavy sound of boots landing on top of the elevator cab.

THUD. THUD.

Sophie let out a choked gasp, covering her mouth with her trembling hands.

"They're on the roof!" Naomi screamed, backing against the corner of the elevator cab.

Above them, the steel emergency escape hatch in the elevator ceiling creaked as heavy hands began wrenching it open from the outside. The sound of metal bending under crowbars rang through the shaft like thunder.

Ortiz raised his service pistol, aiming it directly up at the ceiling hatch. "Rebecca, get under the gurney! NOW!"

Rebecca didn't hesitate. She threw her body over Sophie, covering the young girl with her own torso, protecting her head and neck as the ceiling hatch was violently ripped open.

A tactical stun grenade—a flashbang—was dropped through the opening into the elevator cabin.

"COVER YOUR EYES!" Ortiz shouted.

BANG!

A blinding, violent flash of white light and a deafening, bone-shattering explosion ripped through the small steel box. The concussion wave slammed into Rebecca's head, sending a violent ringing through her ears as disorientation washed over her. The red emergency lights vanished behind a cloud of acrid, grey chemical smoke.

Through the ringing in her ears, Rebecca heard the sound of glass shattering and rapid suppressed gunfire echoing down from the roof of the cab.

STAT-STAT-STAT!

Ortiz collapsed against the elevator wall, his gun clattering to the steel floor as he slumped downward, clutching his bleeding shoulder. Naomi was screaming, pinned in the corner.

Through the dense smoke above, two figures dressed in black tactical uniforms, wearing gas masks and night-vision goggles, rappelled down through the open hatch into the elevator cabin.

One of the operatives slammed Dr. Chen against the wall, striking him violently across the temple with the butt of a suppressed assault rifle, knocking the physician unconscious.

The second operative stepped over Ortiz’s bleeding body, pointing a laser-sighted weapon directly at Rebecca’s chest. The red targeting dot hovered squarely over her heart.

A distorted, electronically modified voice spoke from behind the operative's gas mask.

"Dr. Lawson. Step away from the child and hand over the encrypted storage key, or your life ends in this elevator."

Rebecca, her ears ringing and her eyes burning from the chemical smoke, looked up at the masked assassin. She did not back down. She squeezed Sophie's small hand beneath the blanket, positioned her body tighter over her stepdaughter, and glared up through the thick haze with unfiltered defiance.

"You'll have to kill me first," Rebecca whispered.

The operative did not hesitate. His finger tightened around the trigger.
