Chapter 7

The back door’s glass panel was already shattered, the lock forced open from the outside. I stepped inside the kitchen, my boots squeaking softly against the wet hardwood floor. The house smelled of spilled whiskey and overturned furniture. Pictures of Claire and me from her college graduation lay smashed on the hallway floor, the glass frames crushed beneath heavy boots.
From the living room came the sound of loud, angry voices.
“Where is the account ledger?” Mark’s voice shouted, accompanied by the sound of drawers being ripped out of the wooden sideboard and thrown against the wall. “She has to have the bank security keys somewhere in this house!”
“Search the safe upstairs!” Evan’s voice barked back. He sounded entirely healthy, energetic, and brimming with toxic rage. “Check the floorboards under her bed! She always keeps her private papers hidden near the closet!”
I crept down the dark hallway, keeping my back pressed firmly against the wall. Through the archway leading into the living room, I saw Mark tearing open couch cushions while Evan stood near the fireplace, holding a crowbar in one hand and his 9mm handgun in the other. Victor Varga was sitting comfortably in Claire’s favorite armchair, sipping from a glass he’d taken from her bar cart, looking like an emperor surveying a conquered territory.
“If she doesn't show up by morning,” Varga said calmly, looking at his gold watch, “we burn the house to the ground. The insurance payout goes to the primary lien holder—which my firm acquired three days ago. Either way, I get my money.”
“And what about Claire?” Mark asked, stopping to wipe sweat from his forehead. “What happens when she finds out?”
Evan turned, a terrifying, manic grin spreading across his face. “She won't find out until it’s over. Once her dad is locked up in federal custody, she won't have anyone left to run to. She’ll sign whatever we put in front of her.”
“She has me,” I said, stepping through the archway into the full light of the room.
All three men froze.
Mark dropped the couch cushion he was holding, his jaw hanging open in pure shock. Varga slowly set his glass down on the side table, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. Evan turned toward me, his gun raised, but I already had my Glock leveled directly at the bridge of his nose.
“Daniel,” Evan chuckled softly, though his knuckles turned white around the grip of his pistol. “Look at you. No badge. No backup. Wanted by your own department. You really are an idiot.”
“Put the gun down, Evan,” I said, my voice as steady as granite. “Your brother Dr. Vance is currently sitting in a Knox County holding cell giving a sworn confession to the State Attorney General. Judge Vance’s emergency stay has been revoked. You’re a fugitive, Evan. Again.”
Varga’s calm demeanor cracked for the first time. He snapped his head toward Evan. “What is he talking about? What doctor?”
“He’s lying!” Evan spat, his eyes wild with desperation. “He’s trying to bluff us! He doesn't have anything!”
“Check your phone, Varga,” I said, without taking my eyes off Evan’s face. “Call your lawyer. See if Judge Vance is still answering his private line.”
Varga reached slowly into his suit jacket, pulled out his phone, and dialed a speed-dial number. He held the phone to his ear. Seconds passed. The silence in the room was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic drumming of rain against the windowpanes.
Varga lowered the phone. His face had gone completely pale. “The federal court marshal just placed a freeze on all my corporate assets. Vance was arrested thirty minutes ago at his home in Belle Meade.”
Mark gasped, taking a step backward. “Oh God... Oh God, we’re finished!”
“Shut up, Mark!” Evan screamed, his face twisting into a mask of pure, demonic rage. He didn't care about the money anymore. He didn't care about Varga, the law, or his mother’s property. All he cared about was the hatred that had been consuming him since the day I pulled his hands off my daughter in that shed.
“I should have killed her in that chair,” Evan hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger. “And I’m going to kill you right now!”
BLAM!

A gun fired. But it wasn't Evan’s weapon, and it wasn't mine.
The heavy glass window behind Varga shattered inward as a rifle round tore through the dark night, striking Evan directly in the right shoulder.
