Chapter 13

Leo Varga’s military reflexes were horrifyingly fast. The moment my voice echoed through the dark, he spun on his heel and fired three suppressed rounds toward my position.
Thwip! Thwip! Thwip!
The bullets splintered the wooden frame of the tractor inches above my head. I ducked low, returned fire with two rapid shots, hitting Leo squarely in his tactical body armor. The kinetic impact slammed him backward into the porch railing, breaking the wooden balusters with a loud crack.
Mark screamed in pure terror, dropping the open gasoline can. Fuel spilled across the porch steps, splashing over his boots.
“Shoot him, Leo! Shoot him!” Mark shrieked, scrambling backward like a frantic crab.
Leo recovered instantly, rolling off the porch into the dark garden beds below. He was fast, ruthless, and entirely unbothered by the heavy impact to his vest. He fired another burst of rounds, forcing me back behind the heavy steel wheel of the tractor.
Suddenly, the floodlights on the back of the farmhouse exploded to life in blinding brilliant white light.
The back door flew open. Claire stood in the doorway, wearing a heavy coat, holding Frank’s secondary double-barreled shotgun in her hands. Her face was pale, but her arms were completely steady, her eyes locked onto the porch steps.
“Dad!” she screamed over the sound of the rain.
“Claire! Get back inside!” I yelled, firing two rounds toward the garden bed where Leo was crawling.
Mark saw Claire standing in the open doorway. Driven by sheer panic and desperation, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a disposable flare, and struck the striker cap against the side. A brilliant red flame hissed to life in his hand.
“If I go down, you don't get anything!” Mark screamed, throwing the lit flare directly onto the gasoline-soaked porch.
FOOM!
A wall of orange fire exploded into the night sky, engulfing the wooden stairs in a roaring inferno. The heat hit my face like an open oven door. Claire was forced back inside as flames licked against the door frame, threatening to trap her in the burning kitchen.
“Claire!” I roared.

I broke cover, sprinting straight toward the burning porch, completely ignoring Leo Varga’s position in the garden.
A silhouette burst through the heavy fog to my left—Leo leaped out of the shadows, slamming his tactical knife directly toward my throat.
