Chapter 5 - The interrogation Room

5
The Federal Detention Center in Richmond was a cold structure of poured concrete and reinforced glass. In Interrogation Room 4B, Arthur Hart sat slouched in a metal chair, his high-end suit rumpled, his hair unkempt. The confidence that had defined him at family dinners for decades had vanished entirely, replaced by the hollow, terrified gaze of a man who realized his entire existence had been a illusion.
Across the stainless-steel table sat Evelyn. She had placed a thick, black leather binder between them.
"Your lawyer is in the hallway speaking with the Assistant United States Attorney," Evelyn said quietly. "He’s trying to negotiate a plea deal."
Arthur swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he reached for a paper cup of water. "Evelyn... honey... you can stop this. You’re an Admiral. You have influence. You can tell the prosecutors that this was all a misunderstanding. That I was tricked by Aegis!"
Evelyn leaned back in her chair. "You weren't tricked, Dad. You willingly bought classified schematics off the dark web using corporate funds. You filed corporate tax returns using forged military verification seals. You committed corporate fraud, wire fraud, and treason."
"I did it for the family!" Arthur cried, slamming a fist weakly onto the table. "I did it to save the company! To give Caroline a proper wedding! To build something we could all be proud of!"
"You did it for your own ego," Evelyn corrected him coldly. "You could never stand the fact that I built a career without your permission, without your money, and without your approval. You needed Caroline to marry a war hero because you needed a trophy to show off at your country club. You needed my rank to validate your business, even while you mocked me to my face."
Arthur’s eyes welled with tears of bitter frustration. "Why didn't you tell me? If I had known who you were in Washington... if I had known you had that kind of power... I would have treated you differently!"
Evelyn let out a soft, sad breath. That was the core of it. That was the absolute, tragic truth of Arthur Hart.
"That’s the difference between us, Dad," she said softly. "You only respect power when it’s wearing a crown and demanding obedience. You think respect is something you buy with a title or flex at a dinner table. If I had to reveal my rank to earn my father’s love, then that love was never real to begin with."
The door opened, and an NCIS agent stepped in. "Admiral, the transport for suspect Caroline Hart is ready. She requested to speak with you before transfer to the federal holding facility."
Evelyn stood up, smoothing her uniform skirt. She looked down at Arthur one last time.
"Your trial starts in three months, Arthur. I won't be attending."
"Evelyn, please!" Arthur begged, half-rising before the agent restrained him. "Don't leave me like this! I’m your father!"
"No," Evelyn said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "You were just a man who raised a daughter he never took the time to know."
She walked out into the corridor and moved down the hall to Interrogation Room 2A.
Caroline sat inside, handcuffed to a eyelet embedded in the heavy metal table. Her designer dress was wrinkled, her makeup smeared across her cheeks. When Evelyn walked in, Caroline’s face twisted into a volatile mixture of rage, shame, and desperation.
"Are you happy now?" Caroline spat, her voice raspy from crying. "You destroyed everything! You destroyed Dad’s company! You ruined my engagement! Nathan left me because of you!"
Evelyn pulled out a chair and sat down slowly across from her younger sister.
"Nathan left you because you viewed his sacrifice, his trident, and his honor as a bargaining chip to get your father a government contract," Evelyn said, her tone utterly flat. "You tried to turn a Navy SEAL Commander into a corporate lobbyist."
"I loved him!" Caroline screamed.
"You loved the prestige of being married to him," Evelyn countered sharply. "Just like Dad loved the prestige of bragging about him. Neither of you ever cared about the man behind the uniform. You didn't care about his team, his risk, or his loyalty. You just wanted the picture on your mantelpiece."
Caroline bit her lip, fresh tears spilling down her cheeks. "What’s going to happen to me, Evelyn? Please... they’re talking about federal prison. Ten years. Evelyn, I can't go to prison! I’m your sister!"
Evelyn stared at Caroline, remembering all the family holidays where Caroline had casually sliced down Evelyn’s self-esteem with sweet, passive-aggressive smiles. 'Evelyn’s always been so private... maybe vague is the better word.' 'She never climbed very high.'
"You chose to take twenty thousand dollars a month from a foreign intelligence firm, Caroline," Evelyn said. "You chose to copy restricted operational logs from Nathan’s home office. You made those choices because you thought you were too smart, too pretty, and too protected to ever face consequences."
"Help me," Caroline sobbed, reaching out her hand, the handcuffs clinking loudly against the metal table. "Please, Evelyn. Use your rank. Talk to the prosecutor. I’ll do anything. I’ll apologize publicly. I’ll tell everyone you’re a hero!"
Evelyn stood up, adjusting her cover on her head.

"I don't need you to tell anyone I’m a hero, Caroline," Evelyn said, looking down at her sister with finality. "My rank isn't a magic wand to save criminals from justice. It’s a responsibility to protect this nation from people like you."
Evelyn turned and walked out of the room, leaving her sister’s desperate screams echoing against the soundproof walls.
