Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

4
The top floor of the Hartwell Manufacturing headquarters in Richmond, Virginia, was an ostentatious display of unearned wealth. Glass walls offered a panoramic view of the James River, and mahogany-paneled corridors were lined with framed photographs of Arthur Hart posing with local politicians and minor corporate executives.
At 13:45, Arthur Hart sat at the head of his conference table, nervously adjusting his silk tie. His skin was pale, gray bags hanging beneath his eyes. Across from him sat Caroline, her face tight with makeup designed to hide the tear stains from two days of nonstop panic.
"Where is Nathan?" Arthur hissed, leaning across the polished wood. "Did you call him again?"
"He blocked my number, Dad!" Caroline whispered fiercely, her voice trembling. "He returned his keys to the townhouse! He’s gone!"
"You ruined it!" Arthur snarled softly. "If Commander Reed had stayed by your side, the Navy ethics committee wouldn't have dared dig deep into our application! A decorated SEAL officer on our advisory board was our shield!"
"Me?" Caroline’s voice cracked. "You’re the one who submitted the stolen specs! You used the file I gave you without double-checking the security clearances!"
"Because you told me your source at Aegis had top-level clearance!" Arthur spat back. "If this contract fails, the bank forecloses on the factory by the end of the month! We are ruined, Caroline!"
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom opened.
A tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal Italian suit stepped into the room, flanked by two broad-shouldered men carrying leather briefcases. His name was Julian Vance—no relation to the Vice Admiral—a senior partner at Aegis Consulting.
"Mr. Hart. Caroline," Julian said smoothly, stepping toward the table with an easy, polished smile. "I trust we are ready to finalize the sub-contract agreement?"
Arthur forced a wide, desperate smile, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Julian! Yes, absolutely. We have the signed addendums ready. We just... we had a minor bureaucratic hiccup with the Navy procurement office, but it’s being handled."
Julian’s smile didn't reach his cold blue eyes. "A hiccup, Arthur? My sources in Washington tell me the Hartwell file was transferred to the Office of Naval Intelligence this morning."
Arthur’s heart slammed into his ribs. "What? No, that’s... that’s impossible. My daughter Evelyn works in Navy administration, she—"
"Your daughter Evelyn is Rear Admiral Evelyn Hart," Julian interrupted, his voice turning deadly sharp. "She is the Deputy Director of Naval Material Readiness. You told us she was a low-level clerk, Arthur. You lied to us about your family’s access level."
Caroline gasped, pulling back in her chair.
"I didn't lie!" Arthur pleaded, rising to his feet, hands shaking violently. "We didn't know! She never told us she was an Admiral! She just... she was always so quiet, so secretive! She just said she worked in Washington!"
Julian sighed, reaching inside his jacket. "It doesn't matter what she told you. What matters is that your stupidity has compromised my network."
Before Julian’s hand could emerge from his coat, the glass wall of the boardroom shattered inward in a cascade of glittering shrapnel.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
Heavy flashbang grenades detonated with deafening cracks, filling the boardroom with blinding white light and disorienting thunder.
Through the smoke, a dozen tactical operators clad in black body armor, armed with suppressed carbines, swept into the room with terrifying speed and precision. Leading the entry stack was Commander Nathan Reed, his tactical visor down, his weapon raised and locked onto Julian’s chest.
"DON'T MOVE! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" Nathan’s voice cut through the chaos like a air-horn.
Julian’s two bodyguards attempted to reach for weapons concealed in their briefcases, but they were instantly tackled to the floor by four NCIS tactical operators, their arms twisted back and secured with heavy zip-ties. Julian dropped to his knees, his hands locked behind his neck, his cold composure finally breaking.
Arthur Hart fell backwards over his chair, scrambling on his hands and knees through the broken glass, sobbing in terror. "Don't shoot! I’m a civilian! I’m an American businessman!"
Caroline was curled in a ball under the conference table, hyperventilating, her hands clamped over her ears.
Silence descended on the destroyed boardroom, save for the heavy breathing of the tactical team and the faint sound of police sirens wailing in the streets ten floors below.
The heavy oak doors swung open once more.
Rear Admiral Evelyn Hart walked into the room. She was wearing her Service Dress Blue uniform, her white cover tucked neatly under her arm, her three gold stars gleaming under the room’s remaining lights. Her polished black heels stepped methodically over the shattered glass.
She stopped at the foot of the conference table, looking down at her father, who was cowering near her feet.
Arthur looked up at her, tears streaming down his flushed, sweaty face. "Evelyn... Evelyn, please! Tell them! Tell them it’s a mistake! I’m your father!"
Evelyn looked at him, her expression unreadable, her eyes completely void of anger or pity.
"You spent fifteen years calling me the office daughter, Dad," Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the ruined room. "You were right about one thing. I do work for the Navy."
She glanced at Commander Reed, who stepped forward and snapped a crisp salute.

"Target secured, Admiral," Nathan reported loudly. "Aegis Consulting network compromised. All suspects in custody."
Evelyn returned the salute smoothly. "Take them away, Commander."
