Chapter 5 - BETRAYAL IN THE BOARDROOM

Time slowed to a crawl. The intruders didn't look like regular street thugs; they moved with military precision. "Drop the drive," the lead man barked, his weapon pointed directly at Rachel's head. The choice was agonizing, but my priority was her life. I nodded, and she let the drive fall to the wooden floor.
One of the men scooped it up, while another roughly shoved us against the wall, patting us down. Within seconds, they were gone, melting back into the rainy night as quickly as they had appeared. The silence that followed was suffocating. Rachel was shaking, but her jaw was set in a line of pure, unadulterated fury.
"They were waiting," she whispered, her eyes wide. "How did they know?"
"My car," I realized, the sickness spreading in my stomach. "Caldwell must have put a tracker on it. Or my phone. He knows we’re working together."
The next morning, the atmosphere at Cole Meridian headquarters was electric with tension. I walked into the boardroom for the scheduled quarterly meeting. The panoramic views of Chicago were stunning, but I could only focus on the shark sitting at the far end of the mahogany table. Martin Caldwell. He was sipping a coffee, looking effortlessly polished and utterly untouchable.
"Evan," Caldwell smiled, a predator baring its teeth. "You look tired. Late night?"
The other board members chuckled, oblivious to the war waging in the room. I took my seat at the head of the table, projecting an aura of absolute authority. "Just tying up some loose ends, Martin."
As the meeting droned on through financial projections, Caldwell requested the floor. He stood up, adjusting his expensive Italian suit. "Ladies and gentlemen of the board, I have a matter of grave concern regarding the security of our intellectual property. Over the past forty-eight hours, our Risk Department, led by my nephew Eric, has uncovered a massive data breach."
My blood turned to ice. He was making his move.
"Someone has been downloading proprietary source code from the west data center," Caldwell continued, projecting a chart onto the screen. "And we have identified the culprit. A rogue security specialist with a long-standing grudge against this company. Rachel Bennett."
The room erupted in gasps and murmurs. He was framing her. He was going to use the very logs she had investigated to destroy her life, just like he had destroyed her father’s.
"That is a lie," I stated, my voice cutting through the noise like a whip. "I have personally reviewed those logs, Martin. The breach was executed using an executive override. An override that belongs to Eric."
Caldwell didn't flinch. He just smiled a sad, condescending smile. "Evan, I understand you’ve grown... emotionally attached to Ms. Bennett recently. But the evidence is irrefutable. We have already contacted the FBI. They are at her apartment as we speak."

The trap had sprung. They had stolen the drive with the real evidence and were now using their fabricated logs to arrest Rachel. It was a flawless frame job.
I stood up, pushing my chair back. "This meeting is suspended." I stormed out of the boardroom, ignoring the chaotic shouts of the directors. I needed to get to Rachel before the FBI did, and I needed a miracle to pull us out of this abyss.
