Chapter 11 - THE OAK PARK SHADOW

I didn't wait for the elevator; I practically sprinted down the fire stairs to the sub-level command center. When I burst through the reinforced doors, Rachel was deep in conversation with Daniel, pointing at a chaotic map of IP addresses on the main screen. She looked up, startled by the violent entry.

"Rachel," I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. "Where is Sophie right now?"

She frowned, instantly sensing the shift in my demeanor. "She's at school. She has a piano lesson afterward. Why? What happened in the boardroom?"

"Victoria Sterling just threatened her," I said, the words tasting like ash in my mouth. "She knows about the logic bomb, she knows we're onto her, and she used Sophie as leverage to force the launch."

Rachel’s face drained of color. The corporate warrior vanished, instantly replaced by the terrifying ferocity of a protective mother. She didn't panic, but her eyes darkened into something lethal. She grabbed her coat and her sidearm from the desk drawer.

"I'm getting her," Rachel said, her voice shaking with adrenaline. "I need an extraction team."

"I'm coming with you," I declared. "Daniel, activate the Blackwood protocol. I want my personal security detail mobilized. Lock down this building and trace every move Victoria makes."

We took my Aston Martin, tearing through the crowded streets of downtown Chicago like a bullet. The rain was torrential now, a blinding sheet of water that made visibility near impossible, but I pushed the car to its absolute limit. Rachel sat beside me, her phone pressed to her ear, frantically trying to reach the school administration.

"They said a car was already dispatched to pick her up," Rachel said, her voice cracking for the first time. "A black SUV. They claimed it was a family emergency authorized by me. Evan, they took her."

"No, they didn't," I growled, swerving aggressively onto the highway toward Oak Park. "The school has a strict release protocol. Your mother is the only other authorized contact. The principal is stalling them. We can make it."

The ten-minute drive felt like an eternity suspended in a nightmare. When we finally skidded to a halt in front of the elementary school, the scene was chaotic. The rain was pouring down on a sleek, black Lincoln Navigator idling near the side entrance. A man in a dark suit was arguing aggressively with the school's security guard near the heavy double doors.

Rachel didn't wait for the car to stop completely. She threw open the door and sprinted across the wet pavement, her hand resting firmly on the holster at her hip. I was right behind her, the sheer rage propelling me forward.

"Get away from the door!" Rachel screamed, drawing her weapon and aiming it squarely at the man’s chest. The drama erupted instantly in the quiet suburban street. The man froze, raising his hands slowly, a smirk playing on his lips. He was professional muscle, unfazed by the gun.

"Easy, Ms. Bennett," the man sneered. "We were just sent to provide an escort. A courtesy from Apex Holdings."

Before he could reach for his own weapon, two black Suburbans screeched onto the curb behind him. My private security team—former Tier 1 operators I paid very well—poured out, weapons drawn and leveled at the Lincoln. Outnumbered and outgunned, the man slowly backed away, raising his hands higher in a mock surrender. He climbed into the Lincoln, and it sped off into the rain.

Rachel holstered her weapon and rushed into the school. Moments later, she emerged, holding a bewildered but safe eleven-year-old Sophie tightly against her side. Seeing them together, a profound sense of relief washed over me, immediately followed by a cold, calculating determination. Victoria had crossed a line that could not be uncrossed.

"We can't go back to the apartment," Rachel said, her eyes scanning the street for secondary threats. "They know where we live. They know her routine."

May you like

"You're not going to the apartment," I said, opening the rear door of the Aston Martin for them. "You're coming with me. To the penthouse. It has biometric locks, a dedicated security elevator, and armed guards. You and Sophie will be safe there until I tear Victoria Sterling’s life apart."

Rachel looked at me, hesitating for only a fraction of a second. The boundaries between us—CEO and employee, billionaire and security director—shattered completely in the pouring rain. She nodded, her hand brushing mine as she guided Sophie into the car. The war had just become deeply personal.
