Chapter 8 - The Truth Revealed

"Jake, stop!" I stepped in front of him, putting both hands flat against his chest. His body was tense, vibrating with pure adrenaline and rage. "Don't. She didn't touch me."
"Did she text you?" Jake demanded, his eyes burning as he glared past me at his mother. "She used an emergency broadcast code on the hospital system to fake a medical distress call to get my attention! I was in the middle of an emergency intubation when my pager went off!"
Dr. Thorne stepped between Jake and the bed. "Jake, calm down. I am your Aunt Aris. I just flew in from Chicago."
Jake blinked, recognizing his aunt despite the years apart. "Aunt Aris?"
"Yes," Dr. Thorne said gently, putting a firm hand on his shoulder. "I came as soon as Arthur Vance called me about the trust fund dispute. I am the executor of your father's secondary estate policies. I came here to put an end to this madness."
Lydia pulled herself up against the pillows, her hand clutching her chest as she sobbed silently. "Jake... please... listen to me..."
"No, Mom," Jake said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it chilled the air in the small hospital room. "I’m done listening. You faked a medical emergency. You pulled me away from a dying patient in the ER just to pull another one of your sick control games."
"I didn't fake it!" Lydia wailed. "My heart hurts! My life is over! You all hate me!"
"We don't hate you, Lydia," Dr. Thorne said sharply. "We are disgusted by your actions. There is a massive difference." She turned to Jake and me. "Kids, come with me to my office on the fourth floor. There are things regarding Kevin’s final wishes that you need to know—things Lydia has been keeping from you for five years."
Lydia’s head snapped up in terror. "Aris! No! You promised!"
"I promised Kevin I would protect his family," Dr. Thorne said coldly. "And protecting his family means stopping you from destroying his son's life."
Ten minutes later, we were sitting in Dr. Thorne’s spacious administrative office on the fourth floor. The room was quiet, lined with medical awards and family photographs.
Dr. Thorne opened a heavy steel safe behind her desk and pulled out a worn, blue leather-bound notebook and a set of legal documents stamped with a red seal.
"When Kevin was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer five years ago," Dr. Thorne began, placing the notebook in front of Jake, "he knew his time was short. He also knew that Lydia’s mental health was deteriorating rapidly under the stress of his illness. He wrote this journal during his last three months in hospice care."
Jake reached out, his hand shaking as he touched his father's handwriting on the leather cover. "What is this?"
"Read the entry marked with the red ribbon," Dr. Thorne said softly.
Jake opened the notebook. I leaned in close, resting my head against his shoulder as we read the faint, faded blue ink together.
“If you are reading this, Jake,” the entry read, “it means I am gone, and you are becoming the man I always hoped you would be. I am writing this because I know your mother. I love Lydia with all my heart, but she carries a deep, infected wound in her soul. When my parents rejected her for being poor, it broke something inside her. She spent twenty years trying to prove she was worthy of our family’s wealth, and in doing so, she became obsessed with status, control, and money.”
Jake let out a choked breath.
“I fear that when you fall in love, she will see your partner not as a daughter, but as a threat—a competitor for your affection and a reminder of her own past insecurities. She will try to test your partner. She will try to control your money. If she does this, Jake, you must not yield. Do not let her project her trauma onto your happiness. Protect your family first. I have instructed Aris to release the second phase of my estate—the primary life insurance policy—only when you are married or about to become a father, completely independent of Lydia’s consent.”
I gasped, looking up at Dr. Thorne.
"Your father left a secondary trust of $250,000," Dr. Thorne said, pointing to the sealed legal document. "It was explicitly structured to bypass Lydia entirely upon the birth of his first grandchild. Lydia was named as a temporary steward of the house, but the primary inheritance was always meant for you and your future family. Lydia knew this. She knew that the moment this baby was born, she would lose her financial leverage over you forever."
The truth hit the room like a thunderbolt.
Lydia’s attacks weren't just about arrogance or snobbery. She was terrified of losing the financial control that gave her a sense of security. She had been trying to drive us apart, delay the pregnancy, and discredit me so she could maintain her grip on Kevin’s estate.

Jake closed the notebook slowly. Tears were running down his cheeks, but his eyes were completely clear.
"She didn't just try to destroy my marriage," Jake whispered. "She betrayed Dad's dying wish."
