Chapter 7 - The Hospital Standoff

I immediately called Jake at his hospital rotation, but he didn't answer—he was likely locked in a trauma room or running code procedures.
Driven by a mixture of anxiety and an inescapable sense of obligation, I grabbed my coat and took an Uber to Oak Ridge Community Hospital. I knew I shouldn't go alone, but the fear that something genuine had happened to Lydia—and that Jake would regret not knowing—compelled me forward.
The emergency department waiting room was brightly lit and crowded. I walked up to the triage desk, my seven-and-a-half-month belly making my movements slow and deliberate.
"I'm here to see Lydia Miller," I told the nurse on duty. "I'm her... daughter-in-law."
The nurse checked her computer. "Room 114. Just down the hallway to the left."
As I walked down the sterile corridor, the smell of antiseptic bringing back memories of my own frequent check-ups, I heard heated voices coming from Room 114.
"You can't keep doing this, Lydia!" a sharp, unfamiliar voice scolded from inside the room.
I paused near the door curtain, peeking inside.
Lydia was sitting up in a hospital bed, hooked up to an IV line and a heart monitor. Beside her stood a tall, sharply dressed woman in her late fifties—Dr. Aris Thorne, a senior administrator at the hospital and, as I knew from Jake’s family stories, Kevin’s younger sister who had moved to Chicago years ago.
"I had a panic attack, Aris!" Lydia cried out, her voice raspy and pathetic. "My chest was tight! I thought I was having a heart attack!"
"Your vitals are completely fine, Lydia," Dr. Thorne said coldly, crossing her arms. "Your blood pressure was elevated because you worked yourself into a hysterical frenzy! I spoke to the ER doctor. You told the paramedics you were having a cardiac event just to get admitted to the hospital where Jake works!"
Lydia pressed a tissue to her face, sobbing loudly. "He won't talk to me, Aris! That girl has brainwashed him! She took him away from me! She’s having my granddaughter and she won't even let me see her!"
"Stop lying to yourself!" Dr. Thorne snapped, her voice cutting through Lydia’s cries like a scalpel. "I read the court documents Arthur Vance sent me! You tried to cancel Jake's enrollment! You locked his trust fund! You acted like a psychotic tyrant because you couldn't accept that your son grew up and found a woman who actually cares about him!"
Lydia gasped, pulling the tissue away from her face. "You're taking her side? You're my sister-in-law!"
"I am Kevin's sister," Dr. Thorne said, stepping closer to the bed. "And Kevin would be absolutely disgusted by what you've done. Do you remember when our mother treated you like trash twenty-two years ago? Kevin almost disowned our family for you! He stood by your side against his own mother because he loved you! And now, you are doing the exact same vile thing to Jake and Emma!"
"It's not the same!" Lydia shrieked. "Emma is a nobody! She works at a checkout counter!"
"And you were a waitress at a diner when Kevin met you!" Dr. Thorne roared back. "Have you lost your damn mind, Lydia?! You were a twenty-one-year-old waitress with no money and no degree when Kevin married you! Our mother called you a gold digger! She said you trapped Kevin! You are repeating the exact same cruelty that almost broke you!"
I stood outside the room, completely frozen.
Lydia had been a waitress? She had been in the exact same position I was in now?
Inside the room, a horrifying silence fell. Lydia stared at Dr. Thorne, her mouth open, her face draining of all color.
"I... I wasn't..." Lydia stammered, her voice suddenly small, fragile, and utterly stripped of its haughty power.
"You were," Dr. Thorne said softly, her anger giving way to deep disappointment. "You became the monster you hated. And if you don't stop this right now, you will die alone in this house, and your granddaughter will grow up knowing you only as a horror story."
Dr. Thorne turned toward the door to leave and caught me standing behind the curtain. She stopped, her stern eyes softening instantly as she looked at my pregnant form.
"You must be Emma," Dr. Thorne said gently.
I nodded nervously. "Yes. I... I got a text saying she was in the ER."
Dr. Thorne glared back over her shoulder at Lydia. "A text sent by Lydia herself using a web-messaging app to fake a nurse's name, no doubt."
My heart sank. It was a fake text. A lure to get me into the hospital.
Lydia looked up from the bed, her eyes locking onto mine. There were real tears streaming down her face now, but for the first time, there was no anger in them. There was only a terrifying, hollow emptiness—the realization that her entire narrative had been utterly shattered in front of her family.
"Emma..." Lydia whispered, reaching a trembling hand out toward me.

Before I could answer, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. Jake rounded the corner, his scrubs covered in sweat, his face white as a sheet. He took one look at me standing outside the room, then at his mother in the bed, and his jaw set into a terrifying line.
"What did you do to her?" Jake yelled, lunging forward toward Lydia.
