Chapter 13 - The Shadow of Marcus Vance

With Victoria Whitmore’s offshore empire dismantled and the Swiss funds redirected into the federal restitution trust, our return to New York should have marked the final closure of the entire ordeal. But when an empire collapses, its toxic debris often drifts in unpredictable directions.

Marcus Vance was currently awaiting sentencing at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. Unlike Grant, who had broken under the pressure and accepted his fate, Marcus was a cornered predator with millions still stashed in untraceable cryptocurrency wallets and private shell accounts.

Three weeks after my return from Geneva, a high-priority encrypted email landed in my private inbox from an anonymous whistleblower within Vance Capital’s remaining compliance staff.

The email contained a recorded audio file from an unmonitored prison visitation booth.

I plugged my noise-canceling headphones in, sitting alone in my study late at night while the city outside slept under a blanket of heavy rain.

On the recording, Marcus Vance’s distinctive, rasping voice was unmistakable:

"...I don't care what the retainer costs. Use the offshore escrow in Belize. Hire Vanguard Investigations—the private operative team run by former military contractors. I want around-the-clock surveillance on Claire Bennett and the child. Find the routine. Find where the private security rotates shifts at the Westchester estate. If Robert Bennett won't negotiate a bail deal with the prosecutor, I will give him a reason he cannot refuse."

A second, deeper voice responded: "Understood, Mr. Vance. The surveillance team is already in position outside the estate perimeter."

The audio cut off with the harsh buzz of a prison intercom.

My blood ran cold, every maternal instinct flaring into sharp, defensive overdrive. This was no longer corporate warfare, legal maneuvers, or proxy battles in boardrooms. Marcus Vance, facing a twenty-year sentence in a maximum-security penitentiary, had crossed the line into outright criminal intimidation.

I stood up, walked into Lily's nursery, and watched her sleep soundly beneath her warm quilt. The thought of mercenaries watching my home, tracking my daughter's movements through telescopic lenses, filled me with a quiet, lethal calm.

I picked up my phone and called our head of private security, Marcus Reyes—a former commander in the Secret Service who had overseen my father’s security detail for fifteen years.

"Reyes," I said, keeping my voice low and steady. "Vance has operatives watching the Westchester property. I want a complete tactical sweep of the perimeter within the hour."

"We’ve already flagged a black surveillance van parked two miles down the access road, Ms. Bennett," Reyes replied instantly. "They’ve been running drone reconnaissance over the tree line for the past forty-eight hours."

"Do not engage them yet," I instructed. "I don't want them simply running away to regroup. I want every single person involved in this operation caught red-handed with full forensic evidence linking them directly to Marcus Vance's cryptocurrency accounts."

"What’s the play?" Reyes asked.

"We set a trap," I replied. "Tomorrow morning, we announce that Lily and I are traveling to our Hamptons retreat for the weekend. We will create a security gap so obvious they won't be able to resist taking the bait."

"And the real Lily?"

"Lily stays right here in the fortified penthouse suite with Dad under twenty-four-hour armed guard," I said. "I will be the one riding in the decoy convoy to the Hamptons. And when Vance’s mercenaries make their move, the FBI will be waiting in the shadows to shut Marcus Vance down for the rest of his natural life."
