Chapter 12 - The Showdown in Geneva

Twenty-four hours later, our private Gulfstream jet touched down on the tarmac at Geneva Airport. The Swiss Alps rose majestic and cold in the distance, their snow-capped peaks mirrored in the crystalline waters of Lake Geneva.

Accompanied by Naomi Price and a senior forensic investigator appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice, I walked into the private conference rooms of Banque Privée de Genève on the prestigious Rue du Rhône.

Victoria Whitmore was already seated at the head of the long glass table. At fifty-eight, she was striking, with silver-blonde hair pulled into a severe chignon, tailored in a bespoke charcoal Chanel suit. She looked like an aristocratic general reviewing a battle map. Sitting beside her were two of Switzerland’s most expensive banking attorneys.

"Claire," Victoria said in an aristocratic, transatlantic drawl, not bothering to stand. "I must commend you. You handled my foolish nephew Grant with surprising efficiency. But Grant was a weak, greedy boy who thought like a socialite. You are now dealing with the head of the house."

I took the seat opposite her, placing my leather portfolio neatly on the table.

"There is no house left, Victoria," I replied calmly. "Your nephew is serving seven years in a federal correctional facility. Your sister-in-law Evelyn is doing community service and living on a state pension in Queens. And your hostile takeover of BioVance Labs failed two hours ago when the New York Stock Exchange halted trading on Helios Global’s domestic accounts."

Victoria’s cool composure didn't falter, though a faint muscle twitched beneath her jaw. "A temporary domestic obstruction. Helios possesses forty-five million dollars in liquid reserves. I can fund litigation against Bennett Capital in London, Zurich, and Singapore for the next ten years. I will bleed your family’s resources until you agree to restore the Whitmore endowment."

"You won't fund litigation for ten minutes," Naomi interjected smoothly.

Naomi opened the portfolio and slid a red-sealed document across the table to Victoria’s lead attorney. The Swiss lawyer adjusted his glasses, scanned the first page, and visibly paled.

"What is that?" Victoria demanded, glancing sharply at her counsel.

"Madame Whitmore," her lawyer whispered in rapid French, before switching to English with a tremor in his voice. "This is an emergency asset-freeze order issued by the Swiss Federal Department of Justice and Police, executed in coordination with the United States Department of the Treasury under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act."

Victoria looked as if she had been slapped. "On what grounds?"

"On the grounds that Helios Global was established in November 2004 using $14.2 million stolen directly from the Whitmore Hotels Employee Pension Trust," I explained, leaning forward, my voice crisp and authoritative. "Your brother Charles created this account through shell companies in Liechtenstein to evade federal forfeiture. Under Swiss law, funds derived from pension embezzlement cannot claim banking privacy protections. As of sixty minutes ago, the entire forty-five million dollars inside this bank was placed under international receivership."

Victoria slammed both hands against the table, rising to her feet. "That is a fabrication! Those were private family dividends!"

"The signatures on the 2004 wire transfers belong to Charles Whitmore—and you, Victoria," I said, pointing to the secondary exhibit. "You signed as the authorized offshore agent. Which means the Swiss federal prosecutor has opened a formal inquiry into your personal involvement in international money laundering."

The room went dead silent. The ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner sounded like a countdown.

Victoria’s aristocratic poise dissolved completely. Her face was gray, the proud posture collapsing as the legal reality closed in around her.

"What do you want?" she whispered, the fight draining out of her voice.

"Sign the immediate, unconditional release of all claims against BioVance Labs," I said. "Forfeit all rights to the Whitmore name's remaining intellectual properties. And step down permanently from every corporate board you sit on in Europe. Do that, and the DOJ will allow you to avoid extradition and live quietly on your legitimate personal pension. Refuse, and you will share a federal indictment with your nephew."

Victoria stared at the pen lying on the glass table. Her hands, usually so steady and commanding, trembled as she picked it up.
