Chapter 3 - The Trap Snaps

Two men in dark tactical suits stepped into the library, followed immediately by Raymond Vance and three armed officers from the Lower Merion Police Department.

"Hands where we can see them!" the lead officer barked, drawing his sidearm and sweeping the room. "Step away from the table!"

The sudden explosion of light and sound turned the room into utter chaos. Eleanor let out a pierced shriek, dropping her purse onto the hardwood floor. Dr. Evans froze, his stamp hovering an inch above the fraudulent medical order, his face instantly draining of color.

Julian jumped back, his eyes darting frantically toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors leading out to the patio. "What is the meaning of this? This is private property! You’re trespassing!"

"Is it?" Raymond Vance stepped into the light of the chandelier, holding a crisp, gold-embossed leather portfolio. He adjusted his glasses, his expression colder than ice. "As of midnight tonight, Mr. Vance, the restructuring period for the Sterling debt expired. You defaulted on the thirty-acre deed. Full legal ownership of this estate—along with every structure upon it—has officially reverted to the sole heir of the Sterling estate."

Raymond pointed a gloved finger directly at me.

"Genevieve Sterling."

Chloe staggered back, her eyes wide with terror as she looked between Raymond and the police officers. "No... no, that’s impossible! The deadline was tomorrow at five PM!"

"The paperwork you intercepted was a secondary decoy, Miss Hayes," Raymond said smoothly, pulling out a tablet. "We filed the acceleration clause three days ago after detecting unauthorized, fraudulent transfers from Miss Sterling's firm to your offshore holding company in Nevis. You walked straight into a federal sting."

Julian’s eyes snapped to me.

I didn't blink. I didn't tremble. I slowly sat up on the leather couch, wiped the wetness from the corner of my mouth, and tossed the wool blanket onto the floor. I stood up straight, smoothing down the front of my jacket, looking my husband straight in the eye with an unyielding glare that made him step back.

"Genevieve?" Julian stammered, his voice cracking. "You... you were unconscious... the tea..."

"The tea was analyzed by the state forensic lab forty-eight hours ago, Julian," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the vaulted library. "I haven't taken a single sip of anything provided by your family since I walked out of that kitchen."

I pulled the tiny audio transmitter from my pocket and set it down on the glass coffee table with a soft click.

"Every threat. Every discussion about sedating me. Every detail of your deal with Chloe and Dr. Evans," I continued, looking directly at my mother-in-law, whose jaw was working silently in shock. "It’s all been streamed live to a judge, the district attorney, and the state medical board."

"You little bitch!" Victoria screamed, lunging toward me with her nails clawed out.

Before she could reach me, an officer slammed her against the oak bookshelf, pulling her arms behind her back and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists. She let out a shriek of rage, kicking blindly at the air.

"Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, kidnapping, and corporate fraud," the officer read cold-bloodedly.

"Julian! Do something!" Eleanor screeched, backing away into the corner as another officer approached her. "Tell them she’s crazy! Tell them she’s hallucinating!"

"Shut up, Mom!" Julian yelled, his hands shaking violently as he looked at the police officers. He turned to me, his hands raised in a desperate, pathetic gesture of surrender. "Genevieve... baby, please. Listen to me. They made me do it! My mother, Chloe... they coerced me! I was trying to protect you! I loved you!"

"You didn't love me, Julian," I said, my tone flat, stripped of all emotion. "You loved my grandfather's land, my business, and the prestige you thought my money could buy your failing family."

I turned my eyes to Chloe, who was trembling against the fireplace, tears smearing her heavy eyeliner.

"And you," I said softly, stepping closer to my former best friend. "You sold six years of loyalty for twenty percent of a real estate development project."

"Genny, please," Chloe sobbed, dropping to her knees on the rug. "I was broke! My firm was failing! Julian promised me we could build something together—he said you didn't even care about the business! Please, don't do this to me!"

"Take them all into custody," Raymond instructed the officers flatly. "The state prosecutor is waiting downstairs."

As the officers began hoisting Julian, Eleanor, Victoria, and Dr. Evans out of the room in handcuffs, Raymond turned to me, handing me a silver fountain pen and a leather-bound folder.

"There is one final document, Miss Sterling," Raymond said gently. "The formal eviction notice for the Vance family and the court order freezing all assets tied to your interior design firm."

I took the pen, signing my name in sweeping, decisive strokes across the bottom line.

I looked up through the tall library windows just as the red and blue flashing lights of five police cruisers illuminated the dark driveway outside. Julian was pushed into the back of a squad car, his face pressed against the glass, screaming my name through the reinforced window.

I didn't turn away. I watched until the taillights disappeared into the rain.

"Is it over?" I asked Raymond quietly.

Raymond smiled thin, razor-sharp smile. "Over? Miss Sterling, this was just the criminal phase. Tomorrow morning, we begin the civil liquidation of everything the Vance family has ever owned."
