Chapter 11 - The Midnight Ambush

The cold barrel of the silenced pistol held by Alistair’s lead operative was pointed directly at Raymond’s chest. The air in the concrete vault became suffocatingly thin, heavy with the stench of oil, dust, and imminent violence. Alistair Vance stepped fully into the room, his white hair catching the harsh glare of my flashlight. In person, his presence was even more menacing than his voice over the phone—a man who had spent thirty years operating above the law, utterly convinced of his absolute immunity.
"Step away from the table, my dear," Alistair instructed softly, waving the gun gently toward the corner. "You’ve played your part admirably. Truly, your father's blood runs strong in you. But this is where the curtain falls on the Sterling family."
I didn't move an inch. I stood directly between Alistair and the open flight case containing the encrypted drives. "You threatened my father with my life when I was four years old, Alistair. You forced him to live like a fugitive in his own city while you lived like a king in Europe."
"It was purely business, Genevieve," Alistair replied with an indifferent shrug, stepping closer to inspect the aluminum cases. "Arthur was an idealistic fool who thought municipal funds belonged to the public. I simply understood that money belongs to those with the vision to take it. Now, step aside before I have Marcus put a bullet through your attorney's knee."
Raymond stood his ground, his shoulders rigid, though sweat was pouring down his temples. "Alistair Vance, you are in the middle of a federal sting operation. You think your political connections can protect you from a double-homicide inside a municipal property?"
Alistair let out a soft, dry laugh that sounded like dead leaves dragging across pavement. "Homicide? My dear counselor, no one is going to find your bodies. This cellar sits beneath a structural demolition zone. Tomorrow morning at seven AM, a scheduled charge of three hundred pounds of commercial dynamite will consolidate the foundation of this old mansion. You, Miss Sterling, and your unfortunate lawyer will simply be listed as tragic trespassers who ignored safety warnings and were crushed under fifty tons of falling masonry."
My eyes snapped to Chloe. She was standing near the steel doorway, her eyes scanning the digital drives, her tablet glowing brightly as she initiated a wireless data transfer from the vault's local server.
"You knew about this, Chloe?" I asked, my voice dangerously soft. "You agreed to let him bury us alive in this cellar?"
Chloe’s hands trembled slightly against her tablet, her gaze refusing to meet mine. "It’s... it’s the only way, Genny. If you live, Alistair goes to prison, and I go down with him. I can't go to prison! I spent my whole life being nobody, watching you have everything! I deserve this money! I earned it!"
"You earned nothing, Chloe," I said, stepping forward a single inch, drawing the attention of the lead guard. "You traded your humanity for a shadow. And you think Alistair is going to let you walk out of this cellar with fifty percent of those bearer bonds? Look at him, Chloe! He left his own wife and son to take the fall in a federal fraud trial! What do you think he’s going to do to you the second those drives are downloaded?"
Chloe’s eyes flickered with a sudden, violent spark of panic. She glanced at Alistair, whose face remained completely expressionless, his eyes cold and dark like deep water.
"Don't listen to her, Chloe," Alistair said smoothly, though his voice had lost its gentle tone. "Complete the transfer. We have twelve minutes before the private helicopter arrives at the clearing."
"He’s lying to you, Chloe," I pushed, taking another step, making my voice ring with absolute certainty. "Check the destination routing code on your tablet right now. Is that transfer sending forty percent to your Cayman account, or is it rerouting every single byte directly to Alistair’s private server in Zurich?"
Chloe’s fingers flew across her tablet screen, frantically pulling up the sub-routine network protocols. Her face went from pale to ghostly white as she saw the real-time data stream. The secondary authorization code had been locked—Alistair had stripped her access privileges thirty seconds after she connected to the server.
"You... you redirected the ledger," Chloe gasped, her voice trembling with horrifying realization as she looked at Alistair. "You locked me out of the House of Vane trust!"
"You were always so delightfully predictable, Miss Hayes," Alistair sighed, raising his hand slightly toward the second guard. "An ambitious girl with high-class tastes and a low-class mind. Did you truly believe a Vance would share a twenty-billion-dollar treasury with a low-level corporate spy?"
"You bastard!" Chloe screamed, throwing her heavy tablet directly into Alistair’s face.
The glass tablet smashed against Alistair’s forehead, drawing a sharp line of blood and causing him to stumble back with a yell of outrage. The lead guard turned his gun toward Chloe in surprise.
That split-second of distraction was all I needed.
I lunged forward, grabbing the heavy steel lid of the flight case and slamming it upward with all my strength into the lead guard’s chin. His head snapped back with a brutal crack, his firearm clattering onto the concrete floor. Raymond immediately tackled the second guard into the steel table, sending equipment and aluminum cases crashing down in a deafening cascade of metal.
"Get the drives, Genevieve!" Raymond roared, pinning the guard's arm against the floor.
I scooped up the primary drive containing the original correspondence and the hard copy of the debt ledger, shoving it into my tactical backpack. Alistair was wiping the blood from his forehead, his face twisted into a demonic mask of fury as he raised his silenced pistol directly at my head.
"Die, you miserable brat!" Alistair spat, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Before he could fire, Chloe threw herself against his arm. The gun went off with a muffled cough, the bullet shattering the concrete wall two inches from my ear, showering my face with pulverized stone.
Alistair turned, his face dark with rage, and struck Chloe across the temple with the heavy butt of the pistol. She let out a soft gasp and crumpled onto the floor, motionless.
I grabbed the heavy hydraulic hand pump lever from the drain grate, swung it in a wide, lethal arc, and struck Alistair directly across his right knee. A sickening crack echoed through the chamber, and Alistair let out a blood-curdling scream of agonizing pain, dropping his gun and falling heavily onto his side, clutching his shattered leg.
"Raymond! Out! Now!" I screamed, grabbing Raymond by his collar as he pulled himself up from the unconscious guard.

We bolted through the narrow stone corridor, leaving Alistair screaming curses behind us in the dark. As we reached the outer wine cellar, I grabbed the heavy titanium bypass lever of the hydraulic vault door, jammed the iron rod into the mechanism, and pulled it down with everything I had left.
The ten-ton steel door swung shut with a thunderous, irreversible bang, sealing Alistair Vance inside his own secret vault.
