Chapter 9 - The Verdict

Z

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

When the heavy wooden doors of the courtroom reopened, the air inside was thick with tension. Maya sat in the front row, holding her father’s hand. Beside her sat Veronica, calm and composed.

Victoria stood at the defense table, her chin thrust out, still clinging to the delusion that her standing in the community would protect her.

"Has the jury reached a verdict?" Judge Montgomery asked.

"We have, Your Honor," the foreperson, a stern-looking woman in her fifties, replied, handing a sheet of paper to the bailiff.

Judge Montgomery read the slip, her face unreadable, before returning it. "Will the defendant please stand."

Victoria stood up, crossing her arms defensively.

"On Count One: Attempted Murder in the Second Degree," the foreperson read, her voice clear and echoing. "We find the defendant, Victoria Elizabeth Vance, Guilty."

A sharp gasp echoed through the courtroom. Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer shock.

"On Count Two: First-Degree Kidnapping... Guilty."

"On Count Three: Reckless Endangerment... Guilty."

"On Count Four: Child Abuse resulting in Serious Bodily Injury... Guilty."

With every count, Victoria’s composure fell apart further. Her knees buckled, and she fell back into her chair, gasping for air as if the reality of her long imprisonment had suddenly stripped the room of oxygen.

"The defendant is remanded into custody without bail pending sentencing," Judge Montgomery announced coldly. "Court is adjourned."

The bailiffs immediately stepped forward, grabbing Victoria’s arms to lock her wrists in heavy steel handcuffs once again.

"No! No!" Victoria screamed, kicking her legs as she was pulled away from the table. "Maya! You did this! You destroyed my family! Ethan! Ethan, save me!"

Maya didn't turn away. She stood up slowly, looking directly into Victoria’s crazed eyes as the disgraced woman was dragged down the central aisle toward the holding cells.

"You destroyed yourself, Victoria," Maya said, loud enough for her to hear over her frantic screaming. "Your family was already broken. I just stopped letting you break me."

Outside the courthouse, the midday sun broke through the snow clouds, casting brilliant light across the marble steps. Reporters swarmed the entrance, flashes going off like fireworks as Maya, Robert, and Veronica emerged.

Ruiz stood at the microphone podium, addressing the press. "Today, justice was served. Victoria Vance was held fully accountable for an act of monstrous cruelty. This verdict sends a clear message: no amount of wealth, status, or familial leverage places anyone above the law."

As the reporters shouted questions, Maya walked down the steps toward her father’s truck. Standing near the edge of the courthouse plaza, hidden behind a concrete pillar, was Ethan.

He looked thinner, his face hollow, wearing a worn coat. He looked at Maya, his eyes brimming with remorse, shame, and love that had nowhere left to go.

Maya paused for a moment. She didn't glare at him. She didn't show hatred. She simply gave him a gentle, sad nod of acknowledgment—a final goodbye to the life they had shared—before stepping into her father’s truck and shutting the door.

Ethan stood alone in the cold wind, watching the tail lights of the truck disappear into the Denver traffic, knowing he had lost the only real warmth he had ever known.
