Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Empire

Two weeks after the incident, Maya was settling into her father’s cozy ranch-style house on the outskirts of Denver. The guest room had been transformed into a nursery, decorated with soft gray blankets, floating wooden shelves, and a bassinet where baby Mateo lay sleeping peacefully, his vital signs now completely normal.

Maya sat at the dining table with Veronica. Outside, the autumn wind rustled through the oak trees, but inside, the atmosphere was focused and calculated.

"The criminal trial is set for early next year," Veronica said, opening a thick blue binder. "The DA is refusing any plea bargain that doesn't involve substantial prison time for Victoria. Arthur’s attorney is trying to negotiate a deal—he’s offering to testify against Victoria in exchange for a reduced sentence on negligence charges."

Maya raised an eyebrow. "Arthur is turning on her?"

"Self-preservation is a powerful motivator," Veronica noted with a sharp smile. "When faced with ten years in state prison, Arthur’s decades of submission to his wife evaporated overnight. But that’s not why I’m here today, Maya. We need to talk about the finances."

Veronica pushed a set of financial statements across the table. Maya glanced at them, her eyes widening as she scrolled through the rows of numbers.

"During your marriage, Ethan convinced you to sign over power of attorney regarding the property development firm his mother ran, correct?" Veronica asked.

"Yes," Maya recalled, anger spiking in her chest. "Victoria insisted that all property deeds in the family had to be held under 'Vance Enterprises' to protect against taxes. She forced Ethan to pressure me into signing my name on several loan guarantees for their new commercial developments."

"Well, Victoria’s vanity was her undoing," Veronica explained, tapping a paper with her red pen. "When Victoria locked you up, she wasn't just committing a crime; she breached multiple commercial covenants. Banks have fraud clauses triggered by criminal indictments of principal officers. As of yesterday, the primary lender for Vance Enterprises has called in a four-million-dollar loan."

Maya gasped. "Four million?"

"And because Victoria used family assets as collateral—including the main house on Oakridge Lane and Ethan's signature—the entire company is facing immediate liquidation," Veronica continued. "Furthermore, because you were coerced into signing those documents under documented financial abuse, I have filed a motion to sever your liability entirely."

"What about Ethan?" Maya asked softly.

"Ethan is financially ruined," Veronica said plainly. "He put his name on every piece of paper his mother handed him out of blind obedience. When Vance Enterprises goes under, Ethan will be personally bankrupt. He’s already been placed on administrative leave from his job because of the negative publicity."

A heavy silence filled the room. Maya looked toward the nursery where Mateo was sleeping.

"He thought he was being a good son," Maya murmured. "He thought if he just yielded to her, everyone would be happy."

"He sacrificed his wife and child on the altar of his mother's ego," Veronica said without pity. "And now the bill has come due. Speaking of Ethan... he’s been parked down the street for the last two hours."

Maya snapped her head toward the window. Through the lace curtains, she could see a silver pickup truck idling near the corner of the block.

"He hasn't tried to come to the door?" Maya asked.

"He knows better. My process server handed him the divorce papers and the civil summons an hour ago while he was sitting in his truck," Veronica said smoothly. "He’s broken, Maya. But broken men can be dangerous when they realize they've lost everything. You need to stay vigilant."

Maya stood up and walked to the front window. She watched the exhaust rising from Ethan’s truck in the cool air. Part of her felt a distant, lingering ache for the man she had once loved—the sweet, funny man she had met in college before his family’s toxic web dragged him down. But as she looked back at Mateo’s crib, that ache dissolved into cold iron.

"He had a choice," Maya said, her voice steady and resolute. "Every single day for three years, he chose her. Now he gets to live with his choice."
