Chapter 4

CHAP 4: THE ESCALATION
The lobby of the architectural firm was a cavernous space of polished concrete and towering glass windows. Under normal circumstances, it felt modern and airy. Today, it felt like an arena.
When the elevator doors slid open, I saw my mother immediately. She was dressed in an impeccable cream-colored trench coat, her designer handbag slung over her arm, looking every bit the high-society matriarch. But her posture was rigid, her face flushed with a anger she was barely keeping under wraps.
Maria, the receptionist, was looking extremely uncomfortable behind her desk, while two building security guards stood nearby, watching my mother warily.
Daniel stepped out of the elevator beside me, his presence a solid, comforting wall at my back.
My mother’s eyes locked onto us. Her gaze flicked down to our joined hands, and I saw her jaw tighten as she noticed the sapphire ring on my finger.
"Claire," she said, her voice carrying across the quiet lobby. "We need to talk. Now. In private."
"We have nothing to say to you, Linda," Daniel said, stepping slightly in front of me. "You are not welcome here, and if you don't leave immediately, I will have security escort you out."
My mother sneered, dismissing Daniel entirely. "This is between my daughter and me, Daniel. Do not interfere in family business."
"I am her fiancé," Daniel replied, his voice deadly calm. "And after what you did on Thanksgiving, you lost any right to call yourself her mother."
"I did what was necessary to bring my daughter back to reality!" my mother hissed, stepping closer. She pointed a manicured finger at me. "Do you have any idea the embarrassment you’ve caused? Your father is miserable. Your sister has been crying for three days because of the cruel things you and Daniel said to her. And now, I find out you went behind my back to manipulate your grandmother?"
"Manipulate Grandma?" I laughed, a sharp, humorless sound. "Grandma saw exactly who you are, Mom. She saw how you stood by and let Vivian try to steal my life, and she saw you strike me when I refused to let her."
"You provoked me!" she demanded, her voice rising, drawing the attention of several people entering the building. "You have always been so stubborn, Claire. So selfish. Vivian has had a difficult year, and she deserved a chance at happiness. You have always had everything handed to you—"
"Handed to me?" I interrupted, my voice shaking with a lifetime of suppressed rage. "I worked two jobs to put myself through Northwestern because you told me you couldn't afford to help me, while you bought Vivian a brand-new Mercedes for her twenty-first birthday! I lived in a cramped studio apartment eating ramen while you paid Vivian's rent on a luxury loft downtown! I built my career from nothing, while you introduced Vivian to every business contact Dad had! What has ever been handed to me, Mom?"
My mother hesitated, a flicker of surprise crossing her face before her expression hardened again. "We did what we had to do to support your sister. She is sensitive. She needs more help than you do. You were always strong, Claire. You didn't need us."
"That is the biggest lie you’ve ever told yourself," I said, tears of anger hot in my eyes. "You didn't neglect me because I was strong. You neglected me because it was easier to focus all your love and attention on the daughter who fed your ego, while I actually demanded that you treat me like a human being."
"Enough of this nonsense," she snapped, reaching out to grab my arm. "You are coming home. You are going to apologize to your sister, we are going to sit down as a family, and we are going to resolve this absurd situation before the story gets out to our friends."
Before she could touch me, Daniel stepped between us, his massive frame completely blocking her from my view.
"If you touch her again," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a low, terrifying register, "I will not only file charges for assault, but I will personally ensure that every single one of your high-society friends, every member of your country club, and every business partner your husband has receives a copy of the security footage from Thanksgiving night. I have the recording from your driveway, Linda. I have the audio of you blaming Claire for being slapped. Do not test me."
My mother froze. The color rapidly drained from her face, leaving her looking suddenly old and frail under the harsh lobby lights.
"You wouldn't," she whispered.
"Try me," Daniel said. "Now, get out."
She stared at him, then looked around at the security guards who were now moving closer. Realizing she had lost this round, she pulled her coat tightly around herself, her face twisting into a mask of pure venom.
"You are no daughter of mine," she said to me, her voice trembling with hatred. "You are dead to this family, Claire. Do you hear me? Dead."
She turned on her heel and marched out of the building, her heels clicking loudly against the concrete floor.
I stood there, my breath coming in shallow gasps, my entire body shaking. Daniel immediately turned and pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly as I sobbed against his chest.
"It's over," he murmured, kissing the top of my head. "She can't hurt you anymore."
But as I held onto him, looking down at the beautiful sapphire ring on my finger, a chilling thought crossed my mind.
May you like
My mother was a proud, vindictive woman. She had just been publicly humiliated and threatened. She wouldn't just walk away.
This was only the beginning of her revenge.
