Chapter 8 - The Dragon's Nest10

The air in the room instantly turned to liquid nitrogen.
I didn't scream. I didn't gasp. Years of high-stress military command had trained my nervous system to respond to extreme threat vectors not with panic, but with lethal, hyper-focused clarity.
I picked up the encrypted drive, turning it over in my fingers. "Sergeant Miller," I called out, my voice low and dangerously calm.
The door swung open instantly. "Ma'am?"
"Establish a direct, encrypted satellite link to my estate in Middleburg. I want a visual feed of Eleanor’s nursery on my tablet right now."
"Understood, Colonel!" Miller pulled out his tactical comms unit and began punching in codes.
I turned back to Baron von Strauss. "How long have you known about Victor Vance’s interest in my daughter?"
"Three days," von Strauss replied smoothly. "My internal security apparatus intercepted a private communications channel between Victor Vance's legal team and a high-end private security firm operating out of Zurich. They were gathering floor plans of your Virginia property and tracking the shift rotations of your home security detail."
Within fifteen seconds, Miller handed me the tablet. The screen displayed a live, high-definition thermal and optical feed of the nursery. Eleanor was sleeping peacefully in her crib, monitored by two armed private contractors stationed outside her door and a military nurse inside.
"The perimeter is secure, Ma'am," Miller reported. "I just spoke with Lead Detail Captain Ross. Zero anomalies detected. Defense Condition Amber is maintained."
"Upgrade it to Red," I ordered calmly. "No one enters or leaves that estate without my direct biometric authorization. Double the outer perimeter guards. Authorize lethal force for any unscheduled approach within two hundred yards."
"Yes, Colonel." Miller stepped out to execute the order.
I looked at von Strauss. "Arthur Vance knows nothing about this?"
"Arthur is clean," von Strauss assured me. "He is an honest lawyer who despises his brother. But Victor is desperate, Anna. Project Vanguard’s activation effectively seals the defense procurement market in North America for the next decade. If Victor cannot control Aegis Global through you, he faces total financial ruin."
"Then he made a fatal error," I said, leaning back in my chair. "He picked the wrong weapon."
"What will you do?" von Strauss asked, watching me closely. "You are on foreign soil, bound by NATO protocols and international law."
I smiled, a cold, ruthless expression that made the old Baron blink in surprise.
"NATO protocols govern military engagements between nation-states, Baron," I said, standing up and smoothing down my uniform. "Victor Vance is a civilian criminal threat targeting an active United States military commander's family. He isn't dealing with a corporate board member. He's dealing with a combat commander."
I turned to Major Jackson. "Cancel the NATO evening reception. Get Arthur Vance on the line. Tell him I need a full corporate audit of every asset Victor Vance owns in Europe by midnight."
"Right away, Ma'am!"
"And Jackson?"
"Ma'am?"
"Contact Special Operations Command in Stuttgart. Tell them Colonel Whitmore is requesting an immediate, off-the-books intelligence package on Victor Vance's holdings in Zurich."

I looked out the window at the grey Belgian rain. Victor Vance thought he was playing high-stakes corporate chess with a mother.
He was about to learn that a mother with an Army division behind her doesn't play chess. She clears the board.
