Chapter 5 - The Hidden AccountsZ

The air inside Courtroom 302 of the County Family Law Courthouse was thick with tension. The room was cold, smelling faintly of lemon floor polish and old paper.

Daniel sat at the defense table across the aisle from me, dressed in a cheap, off-the-rack suit that was a far cry from the tailored Italian suits he used to wear. Beside him sat his newly appointed, aggressive defense attorney, Richard Vance—a distant cousin who had agreed to take his case on short notice. Daniel looked gaunt, his face pale, his eyes darting frantically around the room like a trapped animal. Madison was nowhere to be seen; rumors were already circulating that she had dumped him the moment his corporate credit cards were cancelled.

I sat beside Melissa Grant, wearing a sharp navy blue blazer, my hair neatly pinned back, clutching a thick black binder containing six months of meticulous financial record-keeping.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Hayes," the bailiff announced.

Judge Hayes, an imposing woman in her sixties with sharp gray eyes and a reputation for showing zero tolerance for domestic gamesmanship, took her seat at the bench. She adjusted her glasses and glanced down at the court files in front of her.

"We are here today for a temporary relief hearing in the matter of Vance v. Vance," Judge Hayes began, her voice cutting through the quiet courtroom. "I have reviewed the motions, the evidence, and the police reports. Mr. Vance, your counsel has filed a motion requesting emergency custody of your minor child, Noah, on the grounds that Mrs. Vance lacks independent financial means, while simultaneously requesting a complete suspension of spousal and child support due to your recent termination from Sterling Financial."

Richard Vance stood up, adjusting his tie. "That is correct, Your Honor. My client is currently unemployed through no fault of his own after a corporate restructuring—"

"Restructuring?" Judge Hayes interrupted, raising an eyebrow. "Mr. Vance, the documentation provided by Sterling Financial’s legal department states your client was terminated for cause following an internal fraud and embezzlement investigation involving unauthorized personal expenses."

Richard swallowed hard, glancing nervously at Daniel. "Be that as it may, Your Honor, the reality is that my client currently has zero monthly income. Mrs. Vance has not worked in six years. She cannot support the child or maintain the residence. It is in the best interest of the child to be placed in the temporary care of Mr. Vance, who plans to relocate to his family’s property in Texas where strong family support exists."

"Your Honor, if I may," Melissa Grant stood up, stepping forward with absolute composure. "Mr. Vance’s argument is built entirely on a foundation of deceit. My client was a full-time mother by mutual agreement during the marriage, but she holds an active Certified Public Accountant license. More importantly, we have reason to believe Mr. Vance’s claims of financial hardship are entirely fabricated."

Melissa opened her binder and pulled out a stack of financial spread sheets. "We conducted a preliminary forensic review of the joint tax returns and recent bank statements. Over the past eighteen months, Mr. Vance transferred over three hundred and fifty thousand dollars from private accounts into a shell company registered in Delaware under the name 'MV Investments LLC'."

Daniel’s face drained of all color. He jerked around to look at his attorney, his eyes wide with horror.

"MV Investments?" Judge Hayes repeated, her tone dropping dangerously low. "Mr. Vance, who owns MV Investments LLC?"

Daniel stammered, grabbing his microphone. "It... it’s an investment vehicle, Your Honor. For future business ventures—"

"It stands for Madison Vance," Melissa cut in smoothly. "The company was formed six months ago, with Madison Miller listed as the sole managing director. Mr. Vance was systematically draining marital assets to fund a hidden entity in his mistress’s name to ensure those funds would be untouchable during a divorce."

"That’s a lie!" Daniel shouted, slamming his hand down on the table. "That money was for a private equity deal!"

"Order in the court!" Judge Hayes barked, slamming her gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed off the walls. "Mr. Vance, one more outburst like that and I will hold you in contempt immediately!"

She glared down at Daniel with pure disdain. "You transferred three hundred and fifty thousand dollars of marital funds into a entity controlled by the woman you moved into your child’s bedroom?"

"Your Honor, my client—" Richard tried to intervene, but Judge Hayes cut him off with a raised hand.

"Silence, counsel," Judge Hayes ordered. She leaned over her bench, looking directly at Daniel. "Mr. Vance, your behavior throughout these proceedings has been utterly abhorrent. You evicted your own seven-year-old son from his bedroom, brought a third party into the marital residence, made terrorizing threats against your wife on recording, and attempted to hide hundreds of thousands of dollars in marital assets."

She began writing rapidly on her official order sheet.

"Here are my rulings," Judge Hayes announced loudly. "First, Defendant’s motion for custody and relocation is DENIED. Temporary sole legal and physical custody of Noah Vance remains exclusively with Plaintiff, Caroline Vance. Defendant is granted supervised visitation once per week at a court-approved facility, contingent upon a mandatory psychological evaluation."

Daniel let out a choked groan, burying his face in his hands.

"Second," Judge Hayes continued, "Defendant’s request to freeze support is DENIED. Based on Defendant’s hidden assets in MV Investments LLC, the court orders an immediate freeze on all accounts associated with MV Investments LLC, and orders Defendant to pay five thousand dollars per month in temporary child support and spousal maintenance, drawn directly from those frozen funds."

"Third," she concluded, staring cold steel into Daniel’s eyes, "I am appointing a court-mandated forensic accountant to perform a full, uninhibited audit of all accounts, domestic and international, linked to Mr. Vance. If one more cent of hidden money is found, I will refer this matter directly to the District Attorney for criminal prosecution."

"Court is adjourned."

The gavel slammed down.

I sat back in my chair, taking a deep, clean breath for what felt like the first time in months. Beside me, Melissa smiled, softly tapping her pen against the wood. Across the room, Daniel sat frozen in his chair, completely broke, stripped of his child, and facing the terrifying reality that his web of lies was unraveling into a legal nightmare he could never escape.
