Chapter 4 - The Corporate AuditZ

Three days after Daniel was removed from the house, the fallout from his personal life collided head-on with his professional career.
I was sitting in my newly painted kitchen, watching Noah happily arrange his stuffed animals on his brand-new wooden bed frame, when my phone rang. The caller ID showed a number from Sterling Financial's corporate headquarters downtown.
"Caroline? It's Arthur Vance," a stern, commanding voice resonated through the speaker.
"Hello, Mr. Vance," I replied respectfully. "Thank you for taking my call the other day."
"Don't thank me, Caroline. Evelyn told me what happened, and I was appalled. But I’m calling you today because our internal compliance team just finished a preliminary audit of Daniel’s departmental expense reports over the past eight months."
My heart did a quick flutter. "Did you find something?"
"Something?" Arthur let out a dark, booming laugh. "Caroline, your husband didn't just bend corporate policy; he shattered it into a million pieces. He billed over two hundred thousand dollars in luxury hotel stays, high-end dinners, and private jet charters to corporate accounts under the guise of 'client entertainment.' The receipts show that Madison Miller was present on every single one of those trips."
I gasped softly. "Two hundred thousand dollars?"
"That’s just the tip of the iceberg," Arthur continued. "He also authorized a fifty-thousand-dollar 'consulting bonus' directly to Madison’s personal account last month without board approval. He was using company assets to fund his affair with her. The board met this morning. We voted unanimously to terminate his employment effective immediately, for cause."
A strange wave of mixed emotions washed over me: shock, relief, and a cold realization of how deep Daniel’s greed ran. "For cause means..."
"It means he gets no severance package, no stock options, and no termination payout," Arthur explained grimly. "Furthermore, our legal team is preparing a civil lawsuit against him to recover the stolen funds, and we are handing our audit findings over to the District Attorney’s office for potential wire fraud and embezzlement charges."
"Oh my God," I whispered.
"Daniel thought he was smarter than everyone else," Arthur said gently. "He thought he could use company money to buy a young mistress and build a fake life while tearing down the real one he had at home. He is ruined, Caroline. I wanted you to hear it from me before it hits the business journals."
"Thank you, Arthur," I said sincerely. "For everything."
"Take care of Noah, Caroline. If you ever need anything, Evelyn and I are here for you."
When the call ended, I sat in the quiet kitchen, staring at the polished granite countertops. Daniel had lost his job. He had lost his standing in the financial elite. The safety net he had always bragged about had vanished overnight.
Less than an hour later, my phone blew up with erratic, fury-filled text messages from an unlisted number:
[YOU RUINED MY LIFE YOU VISCIOUS BITCH!]
[YOU TALKED TO ARTHUR DIDN'T YOU?! YOU TOLD HIM LIES!]
[THEY FIRED ME! THEY BLOCKED MY ACCOUNTS! ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?!]
[YOU AND YOUR LAWYER ARE GOING TO PAY FOR THIS! I WILL SEE YOU IN HELL!]
I didn't reply. Instead, I immediately took screenshots of every single message and forwarded them straight to Melissa Grant for our upcoming custody and support hearing.
That evening, a knock came at the door. I looked through the security camera monitor on my phone and saw a young woman standing on the porch holding a large brown envelope. It was a process server.
I opened the door cautiously. "Caroline Vance?" she asked.
"Yes."
"You’ve been served," she said, handing me the thick packet of legal papers before turning and walking back down the driveway.
I opened the envelope and sat down at the dining table to review the contents. Daniel’s attorney had filed a counter-motion.
Because Daniel had been fired "for cause" and no longer had a steady income, his lawyer was demanding that the court deny all temporary spousal support requests. Furthermore, they were claiming that because I was currently unemployed and had no independent stream of income, I was financially unfit to provide a stable environment for Noah.
They were asking the court to grant full emergency custody of Noah to Daniel, arguing that he could relocate with the child to his parents' estate in Texas where he could seek new employment.
They were trying to use his own self-created joblessness as a weapon to take my son away from me.
My blood ran cold. Daniel didn't just want to fight me; he wanted to tear my life apart, take Noah away across state lines, and leave me broke, isolated, and destroyed.
I immediately dialed Melissa.
"I just got served with his counter-motion," I said, my voice shaking with rage. "He’s trying to take Noah to Texas, claiming I can't afford to raise him because I don't have an income."
"Breathe, Caroline," Melissa said, her voice like steel. "This is a classic desperate maneuver by a cornered rat. He thinks because you were a stay-at-home mother for six years, you are defenseless. But he forgot one very important detail."
"What's that?"
"You have a master's degree in accounting and a CPA license that you kept active," Melissa reminded me with a grin I could practically hear through the phone. "And tomorrow morning, we are filing a motion that will make his head spin."
May you like
"What motion?"
"We are filing a request for forensic accounting of all marital assets," Melissa declared triumphantly. "If Daniel was stealing from his company to fund his mistress, he was definitely hiding money from you in offshore or hidden accounts. And when we find those accounts, the judge is going to give you every single penny he tried to hide."
