Zero nine

Chapter 16 - The Digital Smoking Gun

The forensic data extraction took until midnight. Sophia’s IT specialists worked in a secure server room, mirroring the hard drives and decryption logs of the logistics managers' devices. By 2:00 AM, a single, comprehensive report was generated and delivered to Claire’s office.

I sat on the couch, watching Claire and Sophia analyze the findings. The room was silent except for the rhythmic clicking of Claire’s mouse.

"It’s here," Claire said suddenly, her voice cracking the silence. "Mom, Sophia... look at this."

We gathered around her monitor. On the screen was an encrypted email thread from October 2018—the exact month and year Donald’s poison pill contract rider had been drafted and signed. The emails were between Thomas Higgins, Donald Mercer, and an external encrypted address that Sophia had traced back to Victoria Vance’s private server in Zurich.

The subject line was simple: Project Shield.

From: Victoria Vance

To: Donald Mercer; Thomas Higgins

Date: October 14, 2018

Donald, the draft for the Special Asset Management Indemnification rider is complete. Thomas has confirmed that the secondary shipping ledgers for the Shanghai prototypes have been successfully integrated into the standard logistics infrastructure. In the event that subsequent audits by external entities or non-family leadership detect these anomalies, the acceleration clause will trigger immediately upon your termination or structural replacement. This ensures that the capital reserves associated with the prototype development are permanently insulated and retrievable by your legal counsel. Ensure this is filed within the 2018 Restructuring omnibus. The board will sign it without reviewing the sub-clauses if integrated into the general bonus allocations.

"They knew," Sophia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "They knew eight years ago that they were stealing technology, and they designed the poison pill specifically to extract the profits if they ever got caught."

"It wasn't an executive severance package," Claire said, her eyes flashing with absolute conviction. "It was a pre-meditated theft mechanism. They used the corporate structure to build a escape hatch for the stolen money."

"This is exactly what we needed," I said, a wave of satisfaction washing over me. "This proves material fraud at the inception of the contract. Donald didn't just receive a legal payout—he executed a fraudulent transaction based on a contract designed to conceal corporate espionage."

"Arthur," Claire turned to her legal counsel, who was reading the printed email thread with a grim smile. "Is this enough to freeze the Cayman accounts?"

"It’s enough to blow Victoria Vance’s legal defense out of the water," Arthur declared, his voice filled with professional triumph. "With this evidence, we don't just file an injunction. We file an immediate emergency ex-parte motion in federal court for a temporary restraining order and an international asset freeze. We present this directly to the judge who handled Grant’s case. When he sees that Victoria Vance used a fraudulent contract to circumvent the civil forfeiture laws, he will issue the warrant within an hour."

"And what about Victoria Vance?" I asked. "She’s an international lawyer. The moment she realizes the feds are coming for those accounts, she’ll try to move the money to a non-extradition jurisdiction."

"She can't move it if the clearing banks in New York freeze the wire access," Sophia explained. "The Cayman accounts rely on correspondent banks in the US to process dollars. If the federal judge issues the order, the New York banks pull the plug instantly. The money will be locked in place."

"Do it, Arthur," Claire commanded. "File the motion now. I want those accounts frozen before the markets open tomorrow morning."

As Arthur and Sophia hurried out of the office to execute the legal strategy, Claire leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes for a brief moment. The weight of the entire Mercer empire seemed to lift from her shoulders, if only slightly.

"You did it, Claire," I said softly, walking over to her. "You saved the company. You saved the launch."

"We haven't won until the money is back in our accounts, Mom," she said, opening her eyes and looking at me. "Victoria Vance is like a cornered animal now. She knows that if this fraud is exposed, she doesn't just lose her client—she loses her license to practice law, her firm, and her freedom. She faces federal conspiracy and money laundering charges."

"The desperate are the most dangerous," I reminded her, repeating the lesson we had learned with Grant on that stormy night in my townhouse. "She knows she’s cornered. She won't come at you with a tire iron like Grant did—she’s too smart for that. But she will try to destroy whatever she can on her way down."

"Let her try," Claire said, her voice hardening with an unbreakable, sovereign strength. "I'm not the girl who hides in the dark anymore. I'm the one who controls the lights."

The phone on Claire’s desk rang, breaking the moment. It was the security desk on the ground floor.

"CEO Mercer," the security officer’s voice came through the speaker. "There’s a courier here from Vance International Tax Advisory. He just dropped off a formal legal delivery for you. It’s marked urgent and confidential."

Claire looked at me, her brow furrowing. "Bring it up immediately."

A few minutes later, a sealed, heavy manila envelope was placed on Claire’s desk. She sliced it open with a letter opener and pulled out a single sheet of high-grade vellum paper and a small, encrypted USB drive.

She read the letter silently, her face growing incredibly pale.

"What is it, Claire?" I asked, my heart tightening with a sudden, familiar dread.

Claire looked up at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of horror and cold determination. "It’s from Victoria. She knows we found the logistics files. She’s not trying to run, Mom. She’s blackmailing us."

She pushed the letter toward me. I read the elegant, precise handwriting:

Dear Claire,

Congratulations on your technical discovery. You are more resourceful than your late husband gave you credit for. However, before you take this evidence to the federal authorities, I suggest you review the contents of the enclosed drive. It contains the complete digital blueprints and source code for the clean-energy propulsion system—the entire foundation of your upcoming launch. If any motion is filed against Vanguard Maritime Holdings, or if my name is mentioned to the Department of Justice, this data will be automatically uploaded to an open-source public repository, destroying your patent exclusivity and your contracts instantly. Let us agree to a mutual silence. You keep your company; Donald keeps his severance. If you try to destroy me, I will ensure Mercer Dynamics dies with me.

Sincerely,

May you like

Victoria Vance

I stared at the USB drive sitting on the desk. The hydra had struck back, and its venom was lethal.
