Chapter 8 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks had passed since the dramatic arrest of Mayor Vance. The news cycle had been dominated by the unraveling corruption scandal, exposing a web of political bribery that spanned three counties. But inside the quiet sanctuary of the Mercer Estate, the noise of the outside world slowly faded into a distant memory.
I stood on the back porch, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, watching Julian run across the sprawling green lawn. For the first time in five years, his laughter sounded real—light, airy, and unburdened by fear. Elena sat on a wooden bench nearby, a sketchpad resting on her knees, drawing the grand oak trees that bordered the property.
Her skin had regained its healthy glow, and the gaunt, sunken look in her cheeks was slowly disappearing under proper nutrition and peace of mind.
Yet, despite our newfound safety, an unsettling feeling lingered in the back of my head.
A dark sleek sedan pulled up the long driveway, stopping near the front steps. A tall, middle-aged woman in a sharp gray suit stepped out, holding a thick leather briefcase. It was Sarah Lin, a high-ranking senior investigator from the Department of Health and Human Services.
I set my coffee mug down and walked over to meet her. "Ms. Lin. I wasn't expecting you today."
Sarah offered a sympathetic, yet cautious nod. "Mr. Mercer. We've completed our preliminary review of the living conditions your wife and son were subjected to over the past five years. I need to speak with you and Mrs. Mercer in private."
We walked into the study, closing the heavy oak doors behind us. Sarah sat in one of the leather armchairs, opening her briefcase and laying out several medical evaluation forms.
"First, I want to assure you that the state has no intention of questioning your custody, Mr. Mercer," Sarah began gently. "Julian's physical recovery is progressing remarkably well, and your financial stability is beyond question. However... the psychological reports from the child psychologist we assigned to Julian's case revealed something concerning."
My jaw tightened. "What concerning?"
"Julian experienced extreme psychological conditioning," Sarah said, pointing to a highlighted section of the report. "Your sister Victoria and your mother didn't just isolate them. They systematically convinced Julian that you were dead, and that any attempt by Elena to leave the property would result in Julian being placed in a state institution."
A cold, familiar knot formed in my stomach.
"Furthermore," Sarah continued, looking me dead in the eye, "we discovered that during the third year of your deployment, your mother opened a life insurance policy on Elena in the amount of $1.5 million. Listed as the sole beneficiary was your sister, Victoria."
The air in the room felt instantly thin. "A life insurance policy?"
"The policy contained a specific rider regarding accidental death due to malnutrition or unmanaged medical conditions," Sarah revealed softly. "Mr. Mercer... they weren't just keeping Elena hidden behind the garage to save money. They were actively waiting for her to die."
I sat in absolute silence as the horrific depth of their cruelty settled into my soul. They hadn't just been greedy parasites; they had been patient, calculated predators, waiting to collect a payout on my wife's life while using my money to fund their luxury.
"Where are they now?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper, cold enough to freeze water.
"Your mother and sister are currently in county custody, awaiting formal indictment," Sarah replied. "Their public defender tried to apply for bail this morning, but given the new evidence of attempted reckless endangerment and insurance fraud, the judge denied it."
Sarah closed her file. "They will be going to trial, Mr. Mercer. And Elena will need to testify."

I looked out the study window, watching Elena laugh as Julian showed her a butterfly he had caught in his hands.
"She won't have to face them alone," I said firmly. "I'll be standing right beside her."
