Chapter 7 - The Press Conference Ambush

Z
At 3:55 PM, the grand press briefing room inside City Hall was packed wall-to-wall with local news cameras, investigative journalists, and political reporters. Flashing bulbs lit up the podium where Mayor Vance stood, adjusting his red silk tie and polishing his reading glasses, preparing to deliver the speech that would destroy my biological family and clear his name.
I stood at the back of the auditorium, flanked by David and two plainclothes state police investigators, watching the spectacle unfold.
Mayor Vance stepped up to the microphones, clearing his throat with practiced gravitas.
"Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen of the press," Mayor Vance began, putting on a solemn, sorrowful expression. "Today is a painful day for our great city. As public servants, our primary duty is transparency and integrity. It has recently come to my attention that certain individuals—specifically Mrs. Evelyn Mercer and her daughter Victoria—have engaged in a shocking scheme of financial fraud, identity theft, and elder exploitation against a returning military veteran."
A murmur went through the crowd of reporters.
"I want to make it unequivocally clear," the Mayor continued, raising his hand dramatically, "that neither I nor my administration had any knowledge of these despicable actions. We stand with the victim, Mr. Julian Mercer, and I have personally ordered the District Attorney to prosecute these individuals to the fullest extent of the law—"
"That's a very inspiring speech, Mayor," I called out, my voice booming from the back of the auditorium, cutting through the whir of the cameras.
The entire press corps spun around in unison. Lenses focused on me as I slowly walked down the central aisle toward the podium.
Mayor Vance’s face turned an uncomfortable shade of deep crimson. "Mr. Mercer... please, this is a formal press briefing. We can discuss your family's tragic situation in private—"
"I think the public deserves full transparency, Mayor," I said, reaching the foot of the stage. "Just like you promised."
I turned to the flashing cameras. "Five minutes ago, Richard Vance—the Mayor's nephew and chief financial consultant—handed over a sworn affidavit and two gigabytes of encrypted bank ledgers to the State Attorney General's Organized Crime Division."
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters shouted over one another, microphones thrust forward like spears.
"What is he talking about, Mayor?!" a lead investigative reporter yelled. "Is there a federal investigation?!"
"This is completely absurd!" Mayor Vance shouted, sweating profusely through his tailored shirt as he pounded his fist on the podium. "This man is emotionally unstable! Security, remove him immediately!"
Two municipal security guards stepped forward, but the two state police investigators standing beside me pulled out their badges, stopping the guards cold in their tracks.
"Mayor Vance," one of the state troopers announced loudly, stepping up onto the stage. "We have a warrant for your arrest issued by the Special Grand Jury for felony money laundering, wire fraud, and public corruption."
The flashbulbs blared like blinding lightning strikes. The Mayor looked around wildly, searching for an exit, but two more state troopers entered from the side doors, stepping up onto the stage and snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists right in front of twenty live news cameras.
As the Mayor was led away in shame, screaming threats at his legal team, I stood quietly in front of the podium, staring directly into the main television camera lens.

My mother and sister were undoubtedly watching the live broadcast from their cramped, dingy motel room downtown.
"The truth always finds the light," I said softly to the camera, before turning and walking out of the building a free, victorious man.
