Chapter 9 - Rebuilding from the Ashes

By midnight, the house was completely empty.
Uncle Richard had dragged Julian out by his collar, promising to strip him of his partnership at the firm before handing him over to internal auditors. Karen, terrified of being implicated in the financial mess, practically forced Darlene into her rental car and sped off into the night toward Atlanta, leaving Darlene’s expensive luggage sitting on the driveway curb.
I took the suitcases and threw them into the trash bins at the end of the street.
When I walked back inside, the house was silent. But for the first time in nearly a year, it didn't feel heavy. The suffocating weight that had hung over every room had vanished.
I walked up the stairs and softly opened the door to Maisie's bedroom.
The small nightlight cast a soft pink glow over her room. Laurel was sitting on the edge of the bed, slowly running her fingers through Maisie's hair. Maisie was fast asleep, clutching her stuffed rabbit, her breathing soft and peaceful.
Laurel looked up at me as I stepped into the room. She stood up quietly and walked out into the hallway, closing the door softly behind her.
"They're really gone?" she whispered.
"They're gone," I said. "Julian’s assistant emailed the signed deed release twenty minutes ago. The house is ours. Just ours."
Laurel looked at me, her eyes filling with tears. But this time, they weren't tears of terror or exhaustion. They were tears of pure, overwhelming relief.
She wrapped her arms around my neck, leaning her weight against me. I held her tight, resting my chin on top of her head, feeling the steady beat of her heart against mine.
"I thought we were going to lose everything," she sobbed softly into my shirt.
"We almost did," I admitted, my voice thick with emotion. "Because I was too blind to see what was happening right in front of me. Laurel, I promise you, on my life... I will never let anyone hurt you or Maisie again. Not my family. Not anyone."

"You fought for us," she whispered, pulling back to look into my eyes. "You saved us, Everett."
"We saved each other," I replied, taking her bandaged hands in mine and kissing them gently. "Tomorrow, we start over. Just the three of us."
