Chapter 8 - The Collapsing Empire

"Julian..." Uncle Richard's voice was a low, terrifying rumble. He stared at the wire transfers, his hands shaking with fury. "What is this?"

Julian was sweating profusely now, his slick corporate persona disintegrating into sheer panic. "Dad, listen to me! It’s not what it looks like! Darlene came to me—she was in debt to some private lenders! I was trying to protect the family name!"

"By laundering money through my trust?!" Richard shouted, slamming his fist onto the glass dining table so hard the water glasses rattled. "You stole from Vance Enterprises to cover her illegal debts?!"

"And that's only half of it, Richard," Attorney Vance chimed in calmly. "Julian drafted a predatory mortgage contract between Darlene and Everett. They used Everett's clean credit and home equity as a sponge to absorb the tax liabilities from the Asheville land. If Everett had signed this agreement today, Julian would have transferred full ownership of the Asheville timber rights to his private offshore account, cutting you and the rest of the family out entirely."

Karen looked back and forth between Julian and Darlene, her mouth agape. "Mom... is this true? You told me Everett was stealing from you!"

Darlene backed away toward the wall, her hands trembling, her eyes darting around the room like a trapped animal. "I... I had to do it! Richard, you never gave me my fair share of Dad's estate! You always favored the boys! I deserved that money!"

"You deserved nothing!" Richard roared. "You spent your entire life squandering every dime handed to you! And now you brought my son into your criminal schemes?!"

"She didn't bring me into anything!" Julian suddenly yelled, turning on Darlene with vicious malice. "She begged me! She told me she would go to the state regulators and report our firm's tax structure if I didn't help her hide the Charlotte debts! She blackmailed me!"

"You arrogant little rat!" Darlene screamed, lunging toward Julian with her nails out. "You took a fifty thousand dollar cut off the top! You were greedy!"

"Enough!" I roared, stepping between them.

The room fell dead silent. Everyone was staring at me.

"I didn't bring you all here to watch you turn on each other like vultures," I said, my voice ice cold. "I brought you here to give you one choice."

Julian swallowed hard, wiping sweat from his forehead. "What choice, Everett? What do you want?"

"First," I said, pointing at Julian. "You will draft a complete legal release of the second mortgage on this house. Darlene’s name will be scrubbed from my deed, my title, and my life. You will cover the entire financial deficit out of your personal funds, or Attorney Vance submits these financial records to the North Carolina State Bar and the IRS tomorrow at 9:00 AM."

Julian closed his eyes, his chest heaving. "If I do that... I'm ruined financially."

"I don't care," I said without a trace of mercy. "Sign the paper, or go to prison."

Julian slumped into a dining chair, completely broken. "Okay. Okay. I'll draw up the release."

"Second," I turned to my sister Karen. "You take your mother, you get into your car, and you take her out of my sight. If she ever sets foot in Cary again, if she ever calls my wife, if she ever goes near my daughter's school, I file criminal charges for felony child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon for the scalding soup."

"Everett, please!" Darlene sobbed, dropping to her knees on the dining room floor. The terrifying, tyrannical matriarch was gone; in her place was a pathetic, ruined woman grasping at my pants leg. "I am your mother! You can't do this to me! I have nowhere to go! Richard will cut me off! I'll have nothing!"

I looked down at her. I felt no anger. I felt no guilt. I felt only a profound, hollow pity.

"You had a home here, Darlene," I said softly, calling her by her first name for the final time. "You had a son who loved you. You had a daughter-in-law who welcomed you. And you had a granddaughter who wanted to love you. But you traded all of it for control, greed, and cruelty."

May you like

I pulled my leg away from her grip.

"Get out of my house."
