Chapter 7 - The Architect's Collapse

The cold glass pressed against my back as Evan’s fingers tightened around my windpipe. The phantom memory of my cracked ribs flared with blinding agony, but my mind remained razor-sharp, calculating, and dangerously calm. I had spent two years preparing for this exact moment. I knew that a narcissist like Evan couldn’t resist the urge to gloat before delivering what he believed to be the final blow.

“You took everything from me, Claire,” Evan hissed, his face contorting with the unhinged rage he had hidden behind expensive suits and charm his entire life. “My company, my status, my dignity. Do you know what it’s like for a Bennett to sit in a cell with common filth while you drink coffee in Freedom Park and pretend to be a savior?”

I couldn't speak, but my eyes locked onto his, refusing to grant him the satisfaction of seeing terror. Instead, my right hand slid slowly into the deep pocket of my trousers.

“My mother is wiring your offshore accounts right now,” Evan sneered, leaning closer so his forehead almost touched mine. “By dawn, the media will report that you suffered a tragic psychotic breakdown, murdered Dr. Torres in a fit of paranoia, and jumped through this lovely window. I’ll be the grieving, heartbroken husband who arrived too late to save you during my emergency medical leave. The Vance legacy remains untouched.”

Through the darkness of the room, behind Evan’s back, Maya struggled against the guard holding her. With a sudden, desperate burst of strength, she grabbed a heavy bronze sculpture from the side console and smashed it across the contractor’s temple. The man grunted and collapsed onto the hardwood floor.

Evan’s eyes widened in surprise as he turned slightly at the sound of the scuffle.

That split-second distraction was all I needed.

I pulled the high-voltage tactical taser from my pocket—a gift from Naomi’s head of security—and drove the twin electrical prongs directly into the side of Evan’s neck, pulling the trigger.

Fifty thousand volts of raw electricity surged through his muscular frame. Evan let out a strangled, agonizing gasp as his nervous system instantly seized. His grip on my throat broke, and his heavy body crashed violently onto the floor, twitching uncontrollably as the electrical discharge overloaded his muscles.

I stumbled forward, coughing and gasping for air, rubbing my bruised neck. Maya rushed to my side, grabbing the contractor’s discarded tactical zip-ties.

“Claire! Are you okay?” Maya cried, her hands trembling as she helped me stabilize my balance.

“Tie him... right now!” I wheezed, pointing at Evan, who was groaning on the floor, his eyes rolling back in disorientation.

Together, Maya and I dragged Evan’s arms behind his back, securing his wrists with the industrial-grade zip-ties, followed by his ankles. The second contractor outside had already fled down the fire escape stairs after hearing the commotion, leaving his employer completely stranded.

Naomi stumbled back into the apartment, holding her bruised shoulder, her phone already connected to an emergency federal dispatch line.

“Claire! The FBI Tactical Unit is four minutes out!” Naomi shouted. “Special Agent Marcus Cole authorized the intervention based on the financial wire fraud evidence you uploaded to the federal portal an hour ago!”

Evan slowly regained consciousness, his cheek pressed against the cold hardwood floor. He glared up at me, spit and venom dripping from his mouth. “You’re dead, Claire... my uncle will throw this entire case out... my mother will buy every federal prosecutor in this state...”

I knelt down in front of him, reaching into my blazer pocket to pull out my smartphone. The screen was illuminated, displaying an active live-stream broadcast connected to a secure cloud server shared directly with the United States Attorney’s Office and the Charlotte Field Office of the FBI.

“Did you really think I didn't know you would come here tonight, Evan?” I said softly, holding the screen before his swelling eyes. “I disabled the building's main breaker myself from the basement console twenty minutes before you walked in. The private security team in the lobby wasn’t Vance contractors—they were federal marshals who let you enter so you could commit first-degree home invasion, witness tampering, and attempted murder on live forensic surveillance.”

Evan’s face transformed from psychotic fury to absolute, paralyzing horror.

May you like

“The moment you put your hands around my throat and confessed to the offshore wire transfers, the murder plot, and your mother’s involvement,” I continued, my voice steady and unyielding, “you didn’t just violate your parole. You handed the Department of Justice a clean, unassailable racketeering conviction against your mother, your uncle, and yourself.”

Sirens began to wail in the streets below, their red and blue lights flashing through the darkness, painting the walls in the colors of impending justice.
