Chapter 5 - The Midnight Audit

The neon cross of St. Catherine’s Hospital glowed through the torrential downpour as Naomi and I stepped through the ambulance bay doors. The atmosphere inside was suffocating. Hospital staff whispered in huddles, their eyes darting nervously toward Dr. Torres’s administration suite. The presence of federal badges in a trauma center was an intentional psychological terror tactic, designed to panic Maya into resigning before the truth could be untangled.

Naomi stormed past the reception desk, her legal briefcase swinging with lethal intent. She shoved the glass door open just as one of the federal auditors was reaching for Maya’s desktop hard drive.

“Step away from that terminal immediately!” Naomi bellowed, her voice echoing off the sterile walls like a gunshot. “I am Naomi Price, legal representative for Dr. Maya Torres and the Torres Emergency Fund. If your fingers touch that keyboard again without providing me a physical, timestamped copy of your judicial warrant, I will have you cited for felony spoliation of evidence before dawn!”

The two male agents recoiled instinctively, while the lead auditor—a severe woman with horn-rimmed glasses—turned slowly, holding up a laminated document. “We are executing a legal court order signed by the Western District Court, Counselor. This fund is flagged for high-level international money laundering.”

“Signed by Judge Harrison Vance,” I interrupted, stepping forward into the fluorescent glare. “A judge whose personal residence in Lake Norman features a four-million-dollar undocumented expansion built by Bennett Custom Homes without a single county permit or tax declaration.”

The lead auditor’s expression froze. “Who are you?”

“I am Claire Bennett. The forensic accountant who built the financial system you’re currently failing to understand,” I replied, setting my laptop down on the conference table and opening the screen. “You were sent here on an anonymous whistleblower tip originating from an IP address registered to the Vance Family Estate in SouthPark. You’re being used as private attack dogs in a domestic retaliation scheme.”

The auditor scoffed, trying to regain control of the room. “Your personal marital drama is irrelevant to the paper trail, Ms. Bennett. There is a three-million-dollar dirty wire transfer sitting in this foundation’s ledger.”

“And here is the exact forensic routing path proving that wire was generated, authorized, and transferred by Victoria Vance through an offshore shell company to frame this hospital,” I countered, turning my screen around to reveal a real-time tracking cascade. “Look at the secondary authentication logs. The Cayman transfer was authorized using a private digital signature token linked to Evan Bennett’s legal defense retainer fund.”

Maya stood beside me, her composure returning as she saw the overwhelming wall of data. “You entered my hospital to intimidate trauma victims based on a fraudulent setup orchestrated by a convicted felon.”

The auditor looked between my screen and the court order in her hands, the certainty draining from her eyes. In federal investigations, nothing terrifies a field agent more than realizing they are executing an illegal warrant orchestrated by a corrupt judge.

“I need to make a call to our regional supervisor,” the auditor stammered, gesturing to her colleagues to step outside into the corridor.

As the door clicked shut, Maya let out a ragged breath, wrapping her arms tightly around me. “Claire... they were going to revoke my medical credentials tonight. If you hadn’t walked through that door with that data, the hospital board was prepared to suspend me immediately.”

“I told you two years ago, Maya: you saved my life in this emergency room. I will tear this city down brick by brick before I let Evan touch yours,” I said fiercely.

Suddenly, Naomi’s phone buzzed with an urgent text notification from her private investigator monitoring the Polk County Correctional Facility. She read the message, and her face drained of all color.

“Claire... we have a catastrophic development,” Naomi whispered, her hands shaking as she showed me the screen.

The text read: “Emergency prison transfer executed at 11:30 PM. Evan Bennett was removed from general population on a medical furlough authorized by Judge Harrison Vance. He is currently in transit to a private psychiatric evaluation center in Charlotte.”

My heart stopped. Evan wasn’t behind iron bars anymore. He was out. He was back in the city, operating under the guise of a medical transfer, protected by his family’s corrupt judicial network. The chess game was over; the hunt had begun.
