Chapter 7 - THE SIEGE OF SNOW AND FIRE Z

The front door exploded inward in a shower of splintered oak and iron hardware. Heavy boots stomped onto the hardwood floor, kicking aside the burning embers that spilled from the entry lanterns.
Through the cloud of snow and gunsmoke, two heavy figures dressed in white winter camouflage stepped into the Great Room. Both carried short-barrel assault rifles, their tactical helmets equipped with night-vision visors.
"Clear the left floor!" one of the men barked, his voice muffled by a balaclava. "The boss wants the yellow envelope intact! Target the primary male on sight!"
Behind the massive stone fireplace, Alexander crouched low, his breath coming in shallow, silent gasps. The cold air rushed in through the destroyed doorway, mingling with the heat of the roaring stove. His hands were steady around the grip of his father's 9mm pistol. He knew every inch of this cabin—he had played hide-and-seek in these walls when he was ten years old. The mercenaries didn't know the layout; they only knew numbers and firepower.
Alexander slipped off his heavy leather shoes, moving silently in his thick socks along the shadow of the brick wall toward the kitchen partition.
Crack!
Alexander fired three rapid shots through the wooden kitchen frame. The first bullet struck the lead mercenary in the shoulder, knocking him backward against the doorway with a roar of pain. The second mercenary immediately opened fire, spraying a barrage of automatic rounds across the kitchen counter, shattering glass jars, copper pots, and wooden cabinets into a rain of debris.
Alexander didn't wait. He dropped to his stomach, sliding through the narrow service hatch beneath the counter into the pantry, coming out behind the second mercenary.
He rose like a shadow, grabbing the man’s rifle barrel, thrusting it skyward as a burst of automatic fire tore into the timber ceiling above. Alexander drove his elbow violently into the mercenary’s throat, following with a knee to the ribs. The man groaned, dropping the rifle, but swung a heavy tactical knife toward Alexander’s abdomen.
Alexander leaped backward, the blade tearing through his suit jacket, slicing the fabric but missing his skin by millimeters. He raised his handgun and fired once directly into the mercenary's chest plate. The heavy impact threw the man backward into the dining table, crashing through the wooden chairs and laying still.
The first wounded mercenary, clutching his bleeding shoulder, scrambled backward out the front door into the blinding snowstorm. "FALL BACK! HE'S ARMED! TRIGGER THE INCENDIARIES!"
Down in the dark basement, deep behind the heavy oak racks of the wine cellar, Clara held Liam wrapped tightly against her chest inside the narrow, reinforced iron-walled panic room. The muffled sound of gunfire echoing through the floorboards above sent shivers down her spine.
Liam had his face buried in her neck, his small hands clutching her sweater. "Mommy... is Daddy fighting the monsters?"
Clara squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back the hysteria threatening to consume her. "Yes, sweetie. Daddy is fighting for us. He’s going to keep us safe."
Suddenly, a heavy, dull thud echoed through the floorboards above, followed by the terrifying smell of chemical smoke and gasoline.
FOOMP!
A bright orange glow flared through the floor joists. The mercenaries had fired incendiary flares into the main hall. Dry forty-year-old pine logs caught fire instantly, the flames roaring up the central staircase like a chimney, filling the cabin with thick, toxic black smoke.
In the pantry above, Alexander coughed violently, shielding his eyes from the blinding heat. The ceiling was already collapsing in showers of sparks. The path to the basement door was blocked by a wall of roaring fire.
"Clara!" Alexander roared through the smoke, but the crackle of burning timber swallowed his voice.
He knew he couldn't reach the basement stairs from inside. He turned toward the study's shattered window, dove through the broken frame into the three-foot snowdrift outside, and hit the freezing powder hard.
The icy air shocked his lungs, clearing the smoke from his eyes. The entire western wing of the lodge was engulfed in towering orange flames. Out in the snow-covered driveway, a third mercenary was standing near a black SUV, holding a remote detonator and talking frantically on a satellite phone.
Alexander scrambled through the snow behind the woodpile, moving with desperate speed. He flanked the SUV from the dark, coming up behind the man on the phone.
"Julian, the lodge is going up in flames!" the mercenary was yelling into the phone over the roar of the fire. "The boy and the woman are trapped in the basement! They won't survive ten minutes in that smoke!"
Alexander didn't utter a word. He stepped out from behind the vehicle, brought the pistol up, and pulled the trigger.
The man collapsed into the snow, the satellite phone dropping into the white drift. The small digital screen was still lit up, displaying the caller ID: JULIAN VANCE.
Alexander picked up the phone, pressing it to his ear, his voice dropping into an icy, demonic tone. "Julian."
A brief silence hung over the line, followed by Julian's smooth, arrogant chuckle. "Ah, Alexander. You really are hard to kill. But look around you, brother. Your father's dream cabin is burning. Your precious ex-wife and bastard child are suffocating in the cellar. You lost."
"I'm coming for you, Julian," Alexander whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute death. "And when I find you, there won't be a lawyer, a judge, or a court in the world that can save you from what I'm going to do to you."
Alexander smashed the satellite phone under his boot, threw his pistol aside, and ran toward the storm cellar doors located on the exterior foundation of the burning building.
The double iron cellar doors were locked with a heavy padlock from the outside to prevent intrusion. The flames from the main hall were already licking down the concrete walls of the basement foundation.
Alexander grabbed a heavy steel wood-splitting axe resting beside the log pile. He swung the axe with all the strength left in his body, slamming the blade down onto the iron padlock.
CLANG!
Sparks flew into the snow. He swung a second time, his muscles screaming, the heat from the burning lodge blistering the skin on his back.
CRACK!
The padlock shattered. Alexander threw the heavy iron cellar doors open. Thick black smoke billowed out of the subterranean darkness into the freezing night air.
"CLARA!" Alexander screamed, plunging down the concrete steps into the fiery abyss. "CLARA!"
At the far end of the smoke-filled cellar, the iron door of the panic room was glowing faint red from the heat above. Inside, Clara was beating her fists against the metal frame, coughing violently, holding Liam in her lap as the oxygen inside the small room rapidly depleted.
"ALEXANDER!" she cried out, her voice barely a raspy whisper.
The iron door latch creaked. Alexander slammed his body against the door from the outside, throwing his full weight against the hot steel until the heavy bolt gave way.
The door swung open. Alexander reached into the blinding smoke, grabbing Clara and pulling her into his arms, then scooping Liam into his left arm.
"I've got you! I've got you!" Alexander roared, turning back toward the stairs as a burning ceiling beam collapsed behind them in a explosion of orange embers.
He carried them up the concrete stairs, bursting out of the cellar into the freezing, pristine white snowfield surrounding the burning estate.
They collapsed into the snow twenty yards away from the inferno, gasping for the freezing, clean air. Behind them, the great timber lodge of Richard Vance collapsed inward with a thunderous roar, sending a pillar of sparks three hundred feet into the winter sky.
Liam coughed, opening his hazel eyes, looking up at Alexander’s soot-stained, blood-smeared face. "Daddy... you saved us."
Alexander pulled Clara and Liam tightly against his chest, tears streaming through the ash on his face, wrapping his wool coat around them both as they lay in the snow, watching the legacy of his father’s past burn to ashes.

Clara reached into her inner coat pocket, her fingers trembling, and pulled out the yellow envelope containing the Zurich Revocation Codicil—slightly singed around the edges, but completely intact.
"We have it, Alexander," Clara whispered, her eyes burning with fierce determination as she looked up at him. "We have the truth. Now let's go tear his kingdom down."
