Chapter 5 - BLOOD AND ICE Z

The glass of the forty-fifth-floor window groaned under the pressure as Alexander held Julian pinned against the panorama of the Chicago skyline. For three agonizing seconds, the entire board room held its breath. Senior board members cowered in their seats; security guards hesitated, terrified to lay a hand on the primary CEO of the empire.

"Alexander, stop!" Clara’s voice pierced the red haze consuming his mind. She grabbed his arm, pulling with all her strength. "Look at him! He wants you to do this! Don't give him what he wants!"

Alexander’s chest heaved. He stared into Julian’s mocking, cold eyes, seeing the pure, calculated malice shining back at him. Slowly, agonizingly, Alexander released his grip. Julian slid down slightly, adjusting his silk tie with a smirk as he smoothed the lapels of his jacket.

"Sensible as always, Clara," Julian said, dusting off his shoulders. "You always were the grounded one in this tragic little circus. It's a pity my idiot brother tossed you away for a gold-digger like Victoria."

"Shut your mouth," Alexander rasped, stepping back and pulling Clara behind him defensively. "You think a Swiss court document holds authority over American family law? You’re delusional, Julian."

"The Zurich Codicil isn't just an international trust document, Alexander," Julian replied calmly, picking up his briefcase from the table. "It’s backed by a binding arbitration clause linked to Vance Hospitality’s foreign holdings in London, Paris, and Dubai. If you challenge it in Cook County Court, I will freeze every single international revenue stream this company relies on. You’ll be bankrupt before the trial even reaches discovery."

Julian turned to the terrified board members, projecting his voice with total authority. "This meeting is adjourned. As majority proxy holder, I am suspending all capital expenditures for the Midwest division effective immediately. Alexander Vance is placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the custody and estate hearing."

"You can't do that without a full shareholder vote!" Arthur Pendelton protested, standing up.

"I hold forty-five percent, Arthur," Julian cut in sharply. "And with Eleanor’s thirty percent frozen in criminal litigation, forty-five percent is the supermajority. Check the bylaws before you question me again."

Julian turned back to Alexander, leaning in close so only he and Clara could hear his final, sinister whisper. "The court-appointed child protection team is already en route to the hotel, Alexander. You have thirty minutes to say goodbye to your son."

Julian walked out of the boardroom, his high-priced security team flanking him like a royal guard.

The room emptied in a state of absolute panic. Board members scrambled to call their brokers, terrified of the stock market carnage that would ensue when news of the corporate war broke.

Clara grabbed Alexander’s hands, her fingers icy cold. "Alexander, what do we do?! We can't let them take Liam! He doesn't know who these people are! He’ll be terrified!"

Alexander’s mind was racing, throwing off the rage and shifting into pure tactical survival mode. He looked at the window, then down at his father’s journal lying on the conference table.

"He's not taking Liam," Alexander said, his voice flat, decisive, and dangerous. "Not today. Not ever."

He pulled out his phone and dialed a private number. "Marcus. I need the corporate helicopter on the rooftop pad of the hotel in fifteen minutes. Don't file a flight plan with the FAA until the rotors are spinning."

"Alexander, if you flee with the boy while a custody order is pending, it’s parental abduction!" Marcus warned over the speaker. "They’ll issue a warrant for your arrest within hours!"

"Let them," Alexander hissed. "Get the chopper ready."

Ten minutes later, Alexander’s black SUV tore through the streets of downtown Chicago, running two red lights as he raced toward the boutique hotel where Clara and Liam were staying. Beside him, Clara kept her eyes glued to the rear-view mirror, terrified of seeing police lights or Julian’s black sedans following them.

"Where are we going, Alexander?" she asked, her voice trembling. "We can't run forever. They have billions of dollars, international lawyers, and the law on their side."

"We aren't running forever," Alexander said, turning hard onto Michigan Avenue. "We're going to the one place my mother and Julian could never reach. The old lodge in Northern Michigan. My father bought it under a shell company forty years ago before he met Eleanor. It’s not registered in the Vance Hospitality asset register."

"And then what?" Clara asked, tears overflowing down her cheeks. "We live in hiding? Is that the life we want for Liam?"

"No," Alexander said, turning his head to look her dead in the eye. "We go there because that's where my father kept his private vault. The real documents. Victoria gave us the journal, Clara, but my father wasn't stupid. He knew Eleanor would try to destroy any evidence. If he made a codicil in Switzerland, he left the original revocation key in the safe at the cabin."

They pulled into the underground parking garage of the hotel. Alexander slammed the car into park and ran toward the private elevator, Clara right behind him.

When the elevator doors opened on the penthouse floor, the sight made Alexander’s blood run cold.

Two tall men in sharp grey suits were standing in the hallway outside Clara’s suite. Mrs. Higgins was standing in the doorway, blocking them with her frail body, crying softly as Liam cowered behind her legs, holding his small plastic airplane tightly.

"I am telling you, you cannot enter!" Mrs. Higgins sobbed. "The child is resting!"

"Ma'am, step aside," one of the agents said, pulling an emergency temporary protection order from his leather folder. "We have an order signed by Judge Vance of the Cook County Family Division—"

"Judge Vance?!" Alexander’s voice echoed down the hall like a thunderclap.

The two agents turned as Alexander charged down the corridor like a freight train. Before the first agent could react, Alexander grabbed him by the shoulder, spun him around, and slammed him face-first into the wallpapered hallway wall. The second agent reached into his jacket, but Alexander drove a violent right hook into the man's jaw, sending him sprawling across the carpet.

"Alexander!" Clara shrieked, running past the groaning men to scoop Liam into her arms.

Liam began to cry, clinging to Clara’s neck with all his strength. "Mommy! Mommy, who are those bad men?!"

"It's okay, baby! It's okay! Mommy's here!" Clara sobbed, kissing the side of his face over and over.

Alexander stepped over the downed agent, his knuckles bleeding slightly, his breath coming in jagged gasps. He grabbed Mrs. Higgins by the arms. "Mrs. Higgins, take your things and go to your sister's house in Indiana immediately. Don't answer your phone. Don't talk to anyone."

"Mr. Alexander..." the old woman cried, grabbing his hands. "Your half-brother... he called the judge personally an hour ago. Judge Vance is his cousin on his mother's side! The court order was a trap!"

Alexander’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice. The corruption ran even deeper than he had imagined. Julian had used his maternal family ties to turn the judicial system into a weapon against his own nephew.

"Clara, grab Liam’s coat," Alexander ordered, taking his son’s small hand gently. "We’re leaving through the service stairs. Now!"

They rushed down the emergency stairwell, bursting out onto the rooftop landing where the heavy thump of helicopter blades was already slicing through the cold winter air. The white-and-blue Vance corporate helicopter was idling on the pad, its pilot waving frantically through the glass canopy.

Alexander helped Clara and Liam into the backseat, buckling the five-year-old into his safety harness. Liam stared out the window at the spinning blades, his small eyes wide with fear and wonder.

"Where are we going, Daddy?" Liam asked quietly, using the word 'Daddy' for the very first time in his life.

The word hit Alexander like a physical blow. A wave of profound warmth swept through his chest, washing away the cold rage that had consumed him. He climbed into the seat beside them, reaching out to wrap his large hand around Liam’s tiny fingers.

"We're going somewhere safe, champ," Alexander said softly, looking over at Clara, whose eyes were filled with tears of hope. "We're going to bring down the monsters once and for all."

The helicopter lifted off the pad, banking sharp and hard to the north over the icy grey waters of Lake Michigan, leaving the looming skyscrapers of Chicago behind them.

Down in the parking lot below, Julian Vance stood beside his black sedan, watching the helicopter vanish into the low cloud cover. He slowly pulled his phone from his pocket and pressed a speed-dial number.

"They took the bait," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "He took the boy to the cabin in Upper Michigan just as we predicted."

A cold, gravelly voice answered from the receiver. "And the security team at the cabin?"

"Eliminate them," Julian ordered without a second of hesitation. "Make it look like an armed robbery gone wrong. When the police find Alexander, Clara, and the child... make sure none of them are breathing."
