Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Past

The top floor conference room of Horizon Global was prepared like a supreme tribunal. Rain lashed against the massive glass windows overlooking Central Park, blurring the city into a sea of neon reflections.
Julian Moretti sat at the far end of the long marble table. He was a man in his late fifties, impeccably tailored in a double-breasted Italian suit, with slicked-back silver hair and eyes as cold and gray as the Atlantic Ocean in winter. He was sipping an espresso from a porcelain cup, looking entirely comfortable, as if he owned the room.
Beside him sat three high-powered international defense attorneys, their briefcases open, tablets glowing.
The heavy doors opened.
I walked into the room. I wasn't wearing a hospital gown or sweatpants. I wore a tailored black tuxedo suit with sharp padded shoulders, my lips painted a bold, blood-red hue. Behind me stepped Robert Vance and Ethan, followed by four armed corporate security personnel who took up positions along the perimeter of the room.
Julian set his espresso cup down with a soft, deliberate clink. A patronizing, razor-thin smile touched his lips.
"Victoria," Julian purred, his Italian accent smooth as silk. "Or should I call you Mrs. Cardenas? I must admit, I was surprised to receive your invitation so soon after... well, after your tragic domestic little nightmare."
"It’s Mrs. Vance, Julian," I said, taking my seat at the opposite end of the table, resting my hands flat on the cold marble. "And don't waste my time with pleasantries. We both know why you're in New York."
Julian chuckled, leaning back in his leather chair and crossing his legs. "Direct. I've always admired that about you, Victoria. Even when you were hiding behind that absurd little editor persona, playing house with that pathetic worm Mason."
"You used him," I said plainly.
"I used an ambitious idiot who was foolish enough to think he was smart," Julian corrected, waving his hand dismissively. "Mason came to me desperate for status. I simply gave him an avenue to achieve his potential. It’s not my fault he lacked the intelligence to execute the plan without getting caught by his own wife."
"He put sub-grade steel into high-rise residential buildings, Julian," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous quiet. "He endangered thousands of innocent lives."
"Business is violent, Victoria," Julian replied, his smile vanishing, replaced by a ruthless, unblinking glare. "You know that better than anyone. You built Horizon on crushed competitors. Don't play the saint now just because you popped out a baby."
Robert Vance leaned forward, slapping a thick document onto the table. "Mr. Moretti, we have full digital forensic proof linking your offshore shell accounts in Panama directly to the fraudulent wiring instructions used by Cardenas Construction. That makes you an unindicted co-conspirator in federal corporate fraud and reckless endangerment."
Julian didn't even flinch. One of his lawyers casually leaned over, flipped through the document, and smiled smoothly at Robert.
"Good luck enforcing that in a U.S. court, Mr. Vance," Julian said coldly. "The wire transfers were routed through three layers of Swiss trust accounts before reaching Panama. My legal team will have those charges tied up in jurisdictional appeals for the next fifteen years. By the time you get a judge to sign a subpoena, your corporate stock will have plummeted from the negative press."
Julian stood up, leaning his hands on the table, looming over the space between us.
"Let’s be realistic, Victoria," Julian sneered. "You are weak. You just had a surgical birth five days ago. Your husband is sitting in a remand center. Your mother-in-law is blabbering to the press. Your company's Bridgeport project is under federal audit. You are bleeding from every opening, both physically and financially."
He pulled a silver pen from his pocket and threw a single sheet of paper across the marble surface toward me.
"That is a buyout offer," Julian stated with utter arrogance. "Moretti Group will acquire your controlling sixty-eight percent stake in Horizon Global for forty cents on the dollar. You walk away with a fifty-million-dollar buyout. You take your little baby girl, you buy a quiet estate in Tuscany, and you live out the rest of your life in peace. Reject it... and I will release the rest of the financial dirt Mason gave me. I will break your stock, break your reputation, and leave you with nothing."
Ethan stood up, his face red with fury. "You arrogant bastard—"
I raised my hand, stopping Ethan mid-sentence.
I looked down at the sheet of paper. Then I looked up at Julian Moretti.
Slowly, deliberately, a smile began to spread across my face—not a panicked smile, but a quiet, terrifying grin that made Julian’s lead lawyer visibly shift in his chair.
"Julian," I said softly, reaching out and pulling a black remote control toward me. "Did you really think I invited you to Manhattan so you could threaten me?"
I pressed a red button on the remote.
The massive wall display behind me lit up.
Julian’s gray eyes flicked to the screen—and instantly, the color drained entirely from his face.
On the screen was a live, high-definition camera feed from the Milan Stock Exchange. Across the ticker tape at the bottom of the broadcast, bold red letters were scrolling in Italian:
[BREAKING NEWS: MORETTI GROUP EUROPEAN LOGISTICS SUBSIDIARY SEIZED BY ITALIAN FINANCIAL POLICE FOLLOWING UNCOVERING OF FRAUDULENT OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS]
"What... what is that?" Julian stammered, his smooth composure cracking like thin ice under a heavy boot.
"While you were sitting on a private jet flying to New York to threaten a woman fresh out of labor," I said, leaning back in my leather chair, "my legal team in Rome was presenting the Italian National Anti-Mafia Directorate with the complete, unencrypted server backups we recovered from Mason’s office."
Julian’s phone in his jacket pocket began to ring violently. Then his lawyer's phone rang. Then his assistant's phone.
"You thought Mason was only stealing from me, Julian?" I laughed softly, a dry, lethal sound. "Mason kept a second set of books. He recorded every single phone call, every single wire instruction, and every single shell company setup you ever gave him as insurance against you. He didn't just give me the proof of his own crimes... he gave me the entire blueprint of your illegal European empire."
Julian dropped into his chair as if he had been shot. His hands were shaking violently as he pulled out his buzzing phone, staring at the screen in pure, unadulterated terror.
"The Italian authorities have already frozen your primary liquidity reserves in Milan, Frankfurt, and Zurich," I continued, each word landing like a sledgehammer. "As of four minutes ago, the Moretti Group’s stock has crashed forty-two percent. You aren't buying Horizon today, Julian. In fact, by three o'clock this afternoon, my subsidiary trust will be executing a short-squeeze acquisition of your family’s firm."
May you like
I picked up his buyout offer sheet, tore it cleanly in half, and dropped the pieces into my glass of water.
"Get out of my building, Julian," I commanded softly. "Before the FBI agents waiting in the lobby arrest you for foreign corrupt practices."
