Zero nine

Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

The private recovery ward on the top floor of New York-Presbyterian Hospital was quiet, insulated from the chaotic noise of the city by double-paned soundproof glass. The room looked more like a luxury penthouse suite than a medical facility—hardwood floors, soft ambient lighting, and a plush leather sofa where Ethan was currently monitoring three different laptop screens.

I sat in an reclining armchair, cradling Emma in my arms. The warmth of her little body against my chest was the only anchor keeping me grounded as the full scope of Mason’s betrayal continued to unfurl before me.

The door opened quietly, and Robert Vance entered, carrying a glass glass of water and a thick tablet. His expression was grim.

"He's been processed," Robert said, taking a seat across from me. "Bail was set at five million dollars by the magistrate judge. Mason couldn't even raise the ten percent bond fee. Every single asset tied to his name has been frozen under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations statute."

"And Eleanor?" I asked, gently rocking Emma as she stirred in her sleep.

"She spent four hours in holding," Robert replied with a faint, ruthless smile. "She tried to bribe the holding cell guard with a synthetic pearl necklace. When that failed, she faked a panic attack, but the hospital cleared her within thirty minutes. She’s currently staying at a two-star motel near the airport, paid for by her brother, who is furious with her."

"Good," I whispered. "Let her taste what real poverty feels like. The poverty she thought I came from."

"That’s not the biggest news, Victoria," Ethan interrupted, turning his laptop screen toward me. "Our forensic IT team finished pulling the deleted files from the hard drives Mason tried to run away with. It wasn't just simple embezzlement. It’s far worse."

I narrowed my eyes. "What did he do, Ethan?"

Ethan pointed at a series of encrypted financial transactions and blueprint overlays. "Mason wasn't just cheaping out on construction materials to line his own pockets. He was selling confidential structural schematics of Horizon’s commercial properties to a rival offshore development conglomerate—the Moretti Group based out of Milan."

I froze. My breath hitched in my throat.

The Moretti Group was run by Julian Moretti—a ruthless, predatory billionaire who had been trying to hostile-takeover Horizon’s European assets for the past five years. Julian was a man with zero ethics, known in high-finance circles as 'The Vulture.'

"Mason was feeding Julian inside security codes, structural vulnerability reports, and property valuation data," Ethan continued, his voice heavy with tension. "In exchange, Julian was funneling money into shell corporations registered under Chloe Lawson’s name. Mason was setting you up, Victoria."

"Setting me up how?" I asked, my voice turning to pure ice.

"He knew who you were," Ethan revealed, dropping a bombshell that shattered the last remaining piece of my past marriage. "He’s known for over a year."

The room went dead silent. The only sound was the faint beep of the heart monitor in the corner.

I stared at Ethan, my mind reeling. "He knew?"

"We found an encrypted email thread between Mason and Julian Moretti from thirteen months ago," Ethan said, clicking on a document. "Julian discovered your real identity during a routine corporate intelligence sweep in Europe. He approached Mason, showed him the proof that his 'poor freelance editor wife' was actually the majority owner of Horizon Global, and offered him a deal."

Ethan read directly from the screen: "Julian promised Mason that if he could orchestrate a high-profile corporate scandal that damaged Horizon’s stock value—like a structural failure or a major fraud charge linked to your executive management—Julian would launch a hostile takeover, buy the company cheap, and make Mason the permanent CEO of the North American division with a twenty percent equity stake."

A wave of nausea hit me so hard I had to close my eyes.

Every smile. Every kiss. Every night he came home late claiming he was working hard for 'our future.' Every time he patted my pregnant belly and pretended to care about the life growing inside me.

It was all a calculated, monstrous play.

He didn't just cheat on me because he was bored or arrogant. He was actively plotting to destroy my company, destroy my reputation, and strip me of everything I had built, leaving me broken and disgraced while he reigned over the ashes with my worst enemy.

"And the baby..." I whispered, my voice trembling with a terrifying blend of grief and absolute rage. "The baby changed his timeline."

"Exactly," Robert agreed grimly. "When you went into emergency labor, he realized that if anything happened to you on that operating table—if you died during the C-section—he would become the legal guardian of your estate through Emma. That’s why he didn't answer those nineteen calls, Victoria. He wasn't just celebrating at a lounge. He was actively praying you wouldn't wake up from the anesthesia."

A teardrop escaped my eye, falling silently onto Emma’s soft pink blanket.

He hadn't just neglected me. He had left me to die. He had wanted me to die on that cold metallic operating table so he could inherit my empire and hand my daughter over to his toxic mother to raise as a bargaining chip.

I looked down at my baby girl. She opened her eyes, looking up at me with absolute trust, oblivious to the monstrous darkness that had almost swallowed her birth.

I wiped the tear from my cheek. The pain in my abdomen, the lingering physical weakness from the surgery—it all vanished, replaced by an ancient, iron-forged determination.

"Ethan," I said, my voice no longer trembling. It was flat, hard, and terrifyingly clear.

"Yes, Victoria?"

"Call Julian Moretti's office in Milan. Tell his secretary that the Executive Chair of Horizon Global Holdings is offering him a private meeting tomorrow morning at my Manhattan office."

May you like

Robert frowned. "Victoria, Julian is a shark. He’s dangerous. You're still recovering from a major surgery."

"Julian thinks he was playing chess with a naive little girl," I said, standing up smoothly, clutching my daughter close to my heart. "It's time I reminded him why they call me the Steel Widow of Wall Street."
